ABORIGINAL PEOPLE won’t be lacking trades training for LNG and other industries as an-other program is in the works that could provide them onsite Red Seal certification in craft construction.
The Red Seal Construction Craft Worker Program is in the planning stage by the provin-cial Industry Training Authority (ITA) which is looking for mon-ey to start pilot courses this fall.
Training workers for a poten-tial liquefied natural gas industry is the main thrust of the program with the labour required cited as the main reason why the pro-gram is needed.
The program will train the craft worker who “installs util-
ity piping, places concrete, constructs roads, performs se-lective demolition, performs un-derground work, assists skilled tradespersons,” reads an ITA release.
The director for aboriginal initiatives for ITA Gary McDer-mott says his program will stand out from others by offering train-ing near First Nations villages where industrial projects would be located.
He said partnerships with lo-cal schools like Northwest Com-munity College is a possibility, however private training compa-nies are also being considered.
By July he hopes to have se-cured a training provider and do a pilot program in the fall with
32 students divided at different locations, with a maximum of 16 per section.
“It will allow them to access apprenticeship and employment opportunities,” said McDermott, adding that he aims to reduce unemployment in First Nations communities.
He says the craft certification will be based on field training.
“So the difference is, is that if you go to college and take a foundation program, you start at the college, you finish at the college, and then you go find a job. This program you start the program, when you end the pro-gram you are in an employment placement. You don’t have to go look for a job. It’s included.”
Training to be ramped up
