Bone Scan
• Import .stl file of spine scan
• Point cloud data is unusable in
initial state.
• Spine Scan was provided by Nor
Amalina Muhayudin, PhD
student in Mechanical
Engineering from ITT Dublin.
She is using HyperMesh for her
research on scoliosis.

Create Surfaces From FE
• Since the initial FE is not
connected, you cannot just
re-mesh the features.
• Surfaces must be created
from FE in ‘surfaces’ panel
• Green lines represent
connected surfaces
• Red lines represent free
edges

Deleting ‘Junk’ Surfaces
• Mask external surfaces you
want to retain
• Delete internal ‘junk’ surfaces
such as those seen below

Defeaturing Geometry
• Create spline surfaces where holes in the surfaces occur.
• Equivalence surfaces in ‘edge edit’ panel.
• Use tools available to create a smooth connected surface.

Repaired Geometry
• An example of
defeatured geometry
using only the last two
vertebrae are shown
• Edges have been
toggled in ‘Quick Edit’
panel
• Solid geometry can be
created from surface
geometry

Tight Shrink Wrap Mesh
• Starting with a 2D mesh
may allow you to easily
improve quality before
converting to a 3D mesh.
• Limited level of detail with
‘shrinkwrap’ tool
• Can also mesh in 2D by
trimming surfaces and
using ‘automesh’ in
sections.

Disc Example
• The geometry of this disc
was trimmed off of the rest
of the model.
• Edges with a low break
angle were supressed in
the ‘edge edit’ panel
• This disc volume was tetra
meshed

Analysis using HyperWorks
• Once the model is tetra meshed,
choose an appropriate user-profile
for the solver you will be using.
• Create and assign properties and
materials.
• Apply loads and constraints.
• Create load steps
• Define control cards and outputs

RADIOSS Static Analysis Example
• Run Analysis in
RADIOSS or other
solvers
• Radioss Bulk: linear
analysis
• Radioss Block: non-
linear and impact
analysis
• Post-process in
HyperView
