Extreme accuracy, high quality and functionality are the distinctive features of Capellini spindles and workheads. Our flexibility allows us to customize the whole production process, designing and manufacturing ad hoc products on specific customer requests.

Moreover, over time the prototypes designed for specific needs have become part of the standard portfolio.

Through production data monitoring, Capellini is able to grant the highest accuracy level even for the manufacture of standard series products.

R & D department is currently pursuing a valuable cooperation with specialized laboratories, MUSP and ITIA-CNR.

Goals:• uncovering new technologies that can be used for industrial applications,• develop innovative design and manufacturing solutions to be standardized,• create one-step-ahead value by increasing available technological options.

Innovation leaning to vanguard

In cooperation with the external laboratories, new technologies for the industry are improved to focus on advantages, disadvantages, developments and peculiarities. The shared know-how is used by Capellini to make those technologies easily applied in the de-signing phase. Moreover the access to vanguard technologies both in design, modeling and manufacturing processes, allows us to quickly prototype new products. This high-level technological transfer provides the product and the company with added value. The search for new technologies has been leading the company to obtain different patents and offer an increasingly competent service.

Spindles are the heart of the machine tool. Accuracy, high level performances and functionality are necessary prerequisites. Capellini is organized so that every component is manufactured in accordance to these specifications. The headquarters consists of a 2500 square meter facility including five departments:

Designing utilizing high level software and advanced CAD 3D instruments.

Machining which allows flexibility in the process in order to manage all pieces during manufacturing.

Finishing and grinding carried out in a climate-controlled environment for the highest accuracy.

Assembly in a separate and supervised area to grant quality and efficiency.

Testing where the product is tested according to the company’s high quality standards.

The company is provided with a metrology laboratory, with temperature controlled to 20°C, crucial to avoid metal deformations and to carry out measurements with the utmost accuracy and reliability.

Integral electric motorsThe heart of spindle. The spindle is the heart of machine tool and the electric motor is the heart of spindle. This is why Capellini uses only first class motors to take advantage of the most advanced technology available on the market. All motors are provided with plastic embedded stators to achieve the utmost thermal efficiency by conveying the heat from the heads to the cooling circuit. This type of stator improves the life of the motor because the winding is properly protected against collisions, infiltrations and agents that can endanger the insulation capacity. Capellini selects the motor with the best performanceand the most suitable technology for each application. Many different types of motors are used, from the traditional and more versatile asynchronous motors to the more efficient and enhanced synchronous motors. Asynchronous motors provide a wide choice of applications as they can operate both with star and triangle connections making 2 motors in 1 available. Synchronous motors allow the spindle to reach the maximum power density and to achieve the best performance outcome without compromise.

Top quality bearingsNothing but the best. Capellini sources its supplies from only the top bearing manufacturers offering the best combination of speed and sturdiness. All the bearings used follow the ABEC-9 or ISO P2 precision classes and the dimensional tolerances are selected in-house to guarantee the maximum efficiency of the bearing sets. Hybrid bearings, made of ceramic rolling elements and steel rings, are the most appropriate for fast applications. This type of bearing generates lower centrifugal forces from rotation of the rolling elements, while increasing rotation capacity of the bearing load, all while keeping dimensions equal to a standard steel bearing.

Bearing lubricationIt’s not just a matter of speed. The correct bearing lubrication depends not only on the nominal rotation speed to be reached, but also on the machine design. A grease lubricated spindle is more versatile and easy to integrate into the machine. It does not require a special plant design, or positioning and connection of the lubrication unit, a key point in the machine lay-out. This type of lubrication is particularly beneficial when the machine is equipped with multiple spindles. It also enables easier maintenance and is more energy efficient. An injection style air oil lubrication system enables the maximum rotational speed for the longest period of time as the lubricant is constantly supplied in minute quantities to continuously take advantage of its best features. This type of lubrication is perfect where the spindle needs to run endlessly, hour after hour.

Constant bearing preload Provides excellent performance in every working condition. A milling spindle can be used for a wide range of applications. From face milling, to high speed slot milling, the spindle will always be stable and efficient. The SMI ranges of spindles are equipped with the highest precision angular contact bearings assembled with constant preload. The preload is determined by the spring stack force which compensates for possible thermal changes due to the operational heating. This provides higher accuracies while not compromising tool repeatability.

Roller cagesA sturdy approach. The SMI range has been designed to be particularly sturdy, high-performing and reliable. For this reason, the bearing preload slides on a roller bushing instead of the cheaper ball cage bushing. Our years of experience with this type of spindle pointed out that the ball cage bushings can damage the bearing raceways. This can lead to a loss of dynamic stability within the spindle, causing irregular vibrations during operation. In contrast, the wider contact area of the rollers provides better distribution of contact pressures so that the system consistently maintains function.

EncoderPower is nothing without control. So the rings of the motor control encoder are completely manufactured by Capellini. In this way, the maximum number of impulses can be sized in the space available so that each spindle achieves the utmost accuracy.

Coil springs and tool actuatorHomemade (Precisely Manufactured). The whole SMI range offers the best tool clamping systems available. Spring stacks are made from a couple of specially designed coil springs which provide more advantages than the traditional cup springs. In fact, no lubrication is required for assembly, and the operative force is not decreased by friction. The weight of our system is rather light, and ensures a long-lasting efficiency, and a constant balance. The hydraulic actuator of the spring stack has been designed in-house to offer the utmost compactness and includes push/pull function to reduce load on the bearings. With our system, the force is not applied to the bearings during tool extraction and the bearing life is much longer.

Taper cleaning with self-sealing systemBeyond standard. Special ports for the taper cleaning are present on the conical surface and are completely sealed when the tool is in. As soon as the tool is unclamped, air is blown through the ports immediately.This type of self-sealing system is much more reliable as compared to the traditional one with no safety valves that often lose functionality over time.

Internal and external coolant supplyReady for every tool. To meet every working requirement, all SMI spindles are equipped with both internal and external coolant supply. With the center-through system, coolant is supplied via a back rotary union which delivers a high pressure flow directly to the tool. This type of supply is suitable when lubrication needs to be strategically supplied to the work piece. Nozzles for low pressure coolant are also provided for general machining, and to make chip evacuation easier. The internal coolant supply has been designed to control the temperature of the spindle’s front housing, so that the tool accuracy and repeatability are maintained for finish machining.

Connections and utilities Plug and play. To facilitate integration into the machine, installation, and maintenance, all SMI spindles are equipped with interface connections. These utility connections are positioned on the rear part of the spindle to reduce the need for extensive machine modifications.

STR – Turning electrospindles

Locking brakeHydraulic locking brake is supplied on request with each turning spindle. This option is particularly suitable in case of both automated changing systems with robot and hydraulic toolings and when axis locked workings are required.

High-level interpolation Turning spindles with high-definition encoders have been designed to allow wor-kings with direct axis interpolation. They offer the best performance on the most advanced machines equipped with tool spindle on B axis.

Simply high-performingThe design philosophy of this spindle range has been focused on manufacturing spindles that provide all the features generally required by turning machines. We have selected technologies that are able to guarantee the best combination of performance, reliability and rational machine integration.

Easy and versatile assemblyThis spindle range has been designed for easy mounting on both horizontal and vertical axis machines, providing customers with the utmost flexibility in both de-sign and setting up of different devices.

Water resistant Given the various installation options for different machines, all of our grinding spindles are equipped with surface, labyrinth, or pressurized seal systems to en-sure IP-65 class protection. This allows clients to install the product in all areas of the machine tool, without concern for contamination ingestion from mist, cooling lubrication jets, washing etc.

Practical connectionsTo facilitate integration into the machine, as well as installation and maintenance, all STR spindles are equipped with interface connections. This utility connections are positioned on the rear part of the spindle.

SMT – Spindle motors

Integral high-performance electric motorsSMT spindles have been designed to guarantee high performances despite the compact size. This is why all spindle motors are cooled by thermoregulated liquid.All motors are provided with plastic embedded stators to achieve the utmost ther-mal efficiency by conveying the heat from the heads to the cooling circuit. This type of stator also improves the life of the motor because the winding is pro-perly protected against collisions, infiltrations and agents that can endanger the insulation capacity. For all transmission systemsAll models have been designed to supply two different versions of bearings. The high-precision spindle bearing version, made of steel or ceramic bearings, is sui-table for epicyclic transmissions which are faster but have smaller radial loads. A second version, including long-lasting high precision roller bearings, is dedicated to both pulley and gear transmissions that require a higher radial capacity.

Easy and versatile assemblyThis spindle range has been designed for easy mounting on both horizontal and vertical axis machines, providing customers with the utmost flexibility in both de-sign and setting up of different devices.

Multi speed tool pushrod Spindle motors can be equipped with an internal pushrod for tool unlock to enable rotation at a different speed from the one of the shaft. In this way the spindles are compatible with in-line speed change applications.

Bearings for life To maximize the plant simplicity and minimize the programmed mainte-nance, all spindle motors are equipped with high precision, sealed and lifelong lubricated bearings, which guarantee a duration of thousands of hours without maintenance.

EarthingGiven the large amount of electric power installed, carbon brushes are supplied to avoid electrical discharges between shaft and static parts, guaranteeing a su-itable earthing of the rotating parts. In this way, the risk of damage due to the passage of current in the bearings is eliminated.

Bearing lubrication These types of electrospindles require a lubrication system that maximizes rotational speed and the life of the system.This is why all SGH spindles are designed with minimal air-oil lubrication. This solution emits new lubricant in small precise quantities, allowing for continuous optimal oil performance. This type of lubrication is best in conditions where the spindle is stressed continuously for thousands of hours. The lubricant is carried to the bearing through the special perforated spacers, optimized to bring the bearings up to nominal speed of 2.5 million n*dm.

Continuous preloading High frequency electrospindles need to remain as stable and repeatable as possible. To ensure this, SGH electrospindles are designed with high-precision angular contact bearings mounted for continuous preloading. This constant force is applied through a group of springs, which compensates for all changes of materials caused by operating heat. More important, this system compensates for thermal changes through the rear area, without impairing the tool’s repeatability.

Practical connections To simplify integration of the machine, as well as installation and maintenance, all SGH spindles are supplied with practical connectors for all utilities in the rear. To better serve our customers, there are a variety of outlet layouts to facilitate integration into the machine by the client. Axial or 90° horizontal outlets are available with different angles and different connector systems, including encoded. Our connections are designed to simplify interchangeability with other products already present. The availability of different connector types is continually increasing to satisfy customer requests.

All modally-tuned standard and custom toolsSpindle extensions or quills are a key part of the grinding process. In addition to providing the best spindles, we assist clients with the optimum sizing of the tool, both by providing a wide range of tool holders that have already been sized and dynamically tested, and by designing and building tool holders for individual applications. Making appropriate tests for dynamics and failure, allows us to propose advanced construction solutions to achieve the required goals.

Modally-tuned spindles High-speed electrospindles that operate at a very high nominal speed need to run with minimal amounts of vibration. This poses a particular problem with the resonances of the rotating parts. All products in the SGH series are carefully designed. Simulations are performed in the factory to minimize this phenomenon, and to provide the best high-speed performance without producing operational resonance problems that may limit use by the client.

SGE – External grinding electrospindles

Quick and easy assemblyThe outer bodies are designed for easy mounting on modern grinding machines. The mounting and alignment systems simplify the construction of the spindle heads for both vertical and horizontal attachment.

Active balancing system connection To get the best from a modern grinding machine, the tool must always be perfectly balanced. This is why each of our spindles has a connection for an active balancing system. The supplied connection has been built to accommodate the products of leading balancing system manufacturers.

Left and right rotationTo simplify the machine layout, all products have been designed for both right and left rotational operation.

Performance made simpleThe design philosophy of this product line has been focused on creating spindles that contain only what clients really need in general grinding machines. Technologies were selected that guarantee the best combination of performance, reliability and rational machine integration, letting us make use of the highest quality internal parts.We have made use of asynchronous, open-loop controlled motors, with safety rotation control. This simplifies the electronic controls upstream of the axis, allowing the operator to use the drive without costly options or additional hardware.

SMS – Headstock electrospindles

Compact featuresThis line of headstock spindles has been designed to provide full functionality while remaining similar in size to a traditional head.To do this, only top-of-the-line components were selected and then combined in an extremely skillful mechanical integration. This allows us to offer features such as a synchronous motor, high-definition encoder, large drive-shaft hole, and integrated locking brake, all in a size less than that of a traditional head with an external motor.

Locking brakes SMS headstock spindles all come with optional hydraulic locking brakes designed for perfect holding, made with solid “monoblock” machined components. This feature may be requested by the client for use in special situations, such as when automated workpiece change systems with robots and hydraulic equipment are in use.

SGI – Internal grinding electrospindles

Great versatilityThis line of electrospindles has been designed with high performanceasynchronous motors that have a great speed range with constant power. This offers the end user a unique product that can work with grinding wheels of extremely different diameters and speeds. The liquid coolant may be used to cool the motor, offering additional value for the client.

Patented safetyThis line of electrospindles utilizes a system that recognizes each specific spindle tool and limits the maximum rotation speed accordingly. This prevents the risk of over-speeding the wheel that could potentially cause harm to personnel or damage to the spindle.

All modally-tuned standard and custom tools Spindle quills are a key part of the grinding process. In addition to providing the best spindles, we assist clients with the optimum sizing of the tool, both by providing a wide range of tool holders that have already been sized and dynamically tested, and by designing and building tool holders forindividual applications. Utilizing our dynamic and failure testing, we are able to propose advanced construction solutions to achieve the required goals.

Water resistantGiven the various installation options for different machines, all SGI grinding machine products are equipped with labyrinth or pressurized seal systems that ensure IP-65 class protection. This allows clients to install the product in all areas of the machine tool, without concern for contamination ingestion from mist, cooling lubricant jets, washing etc.

SGD – Dressing electrospindles

Air or waterWith a variety of different dressing applications, a client can choose between liquid cooled motors when operating on large dimensions with appropriate dressing disks, and dressing spindles with air-cooled motors, excellent for simplicity and cost-efficient machine integration.

Great versatilitySGD dressing spindles are equipped with interfaces designed to offer maximum flexibility in mounting disks of different shapes and sizes. This reduces the need for the client to purchase different products for similar applications.

Capellini’s distinctive strength is the manufacturing of customized spindles, the product of our capability to perfectly suit customer’s needs. Over time, the continued manufacturing of tailor made products has enabled us to increase our knowledge about products, procedures and applications; this know-how has been fundamental in defining our standard product range. Nevertheless, our attitude to customized manufacturing always inspires our activity. The experience, know-how, and the use of state-of-the-art technology allow us to design specific spindles for any application and machine tool.The application analysis, design through cutting-edge technologies, advanced simulation, and support from the specialized labs, MUSP and ITIA-CNR, improve our ability to predict the final performance. These technologies are especially helpful for determining the static and dynamic behavior of the spindle when integrated into the customer’s machine while in the production process. The ongoing technology development carried out by our R&D enables us to minimize the prototyping time line, and manufacture spindles refined at the first start-up. The critical production stages, such as machining, finish grinding, assembly and final test, are carried out in-house to ensure the highest quality level and the shortest lead-times. The tailor-made spindle becomes an integral part of the machine tool and gives the customer a high performance, long-lasting solution.

AnalysisThe first challenge in achieving a top quality product is to define what are the main features and strengths the application requires, and to understand what characteristics can be improved. Only by spending time for this analysis, can a high value be added to the product. For this reason, our technical and sales staff work closely with the customer from the first steps of the analysis. If necessary, measurements and tests at the customer’s facility are carried out to collect all the data necessary to achieve the best outcome.

Advanced simulationSpindle line and bearing life analysis The right bearings are essential for the right spindle. That’s why we carry-out preliminary function models which allow us to estimate, from the beginning, the most critical parameters of the bearings and spindle axis. With this data, we can estimate the expected bearing life in connection with the operating speed, working loads, structural failures and other variables.

DynamicA modern spindle should ensure the best performance during every working stage, and the best dynamics should also be guaranteed for the whole speed range. Consequently, the eigenfrequency analysis is not enough to avoid the resonances; it is necessary to consider the most advanced theories about the dynamic optimization of structures to decrease vibrations and chatters.

In this way, it is possible to take advantage of the whole motor power curve. Careful analyses of these events, and their constant removal, have enabled us to develop technological components, innovative materials, and constructive methods for this purpose.

ProcessTo go beyond the dynamic optimization of the product, we use state-of-the-art systems to estimate the stable machining capacity. These simulation technologies allow us to rate the expected performance from a spindle while taking into consideration all the variables, such as:

• type and dimensions of the tool • dynamic ductility of the machine• dynamic ductility of the spindle• dynamic ductility of the work piece• power curve of the spindle

Combining the variables measured with the numeric variables simulated, it is possible to define the spindle to be integrated into the machine during the development phase and compare it with the existing references. This operation, carried-out on different mathematical models, allows for excellent product improvement.

DesignThe design is carried-out with the help of cutting-edge systems in use for more than 10 years. The design cycle is based on the 3D modeling of the whole spindle; it enables us a detailed check of every single element and allows for a virtual model of the product. The design is supported by sophisticated production and document management programs, so that modifications and updates can easily be traced.

Prototype flexibility and product line qualityThe best of both worlds. The numerical simulation and process modeling methods developed in the company enable us to estimate the main parameters which make the application high-performing and reliable. This reduces the time usually needed to improve the prototype and make modifications, which consequently saves time and cost. With the help of these methods, we are able to supply new complex and customized products with the efficiency of the standard product.

Technological partnershipAlways the best outcome. The company takes great care in training a team of skilled engineers which are able to quickly and effectively support the machine manufacturer. Tests and empirical verifications Square the circle. To improve the previous stages, it is fundamental to test the outcomes carefully. The company is equipped with test rooms to analyze and record each functional parameter of the spindle. Special equipment is available for dynamic analysis, such as impact testing and modal analysis. These measurements are carried out for each product with the aim of checking the values calculated during simulation and to use them to improve numerical models.
