What is Spinal Disc?

● Spinal discs are spongy cushions tightly arranged in between the block like bones called vertebrae.

● Vertebrae make up the entire spinal column.

● Doctors call it as intervertebral disk.

● Helps for shock absorption, allowing vertebrae movement and keeping spinal column stable.

Spinal disc has two parts,● Tough outer layer or shell called

annulus fibrosus.● Jelly like content called nucleus

pulposus.

Spinal disc are flat circular capsule with about an inch diameter and one-quarter inch thick.

Spinal Disc Problems

The common spinal disc problems are, ● Degenerated Disc● Bulging Disc● Herniated Disc● Thinning Disc● Osteophyte Formation

The disc normally absorbs lots of pressure.

Certain types of pressure may damage the disc and leads to bulging of content.

Causes of spinal disc problems are aging, severe pressure and leads to back pain, leg pain etc.

SymptomsSymptoms of spinal disc problems may vary according to the location and severity of damage.Some may not have any symptoms. Some general signs and symptoms are,

● Back Pain

● Pain radiate down legs while walking, standing, sitting etc.

● Numbness or pins & needles in arms & legs

● Worsening pain while sitting down for long time, blending, sneezing & coughing.

● Obesity● Cigarette smoking● Poor posture● Lack of regular exercise● Poor muscle tone● Incorrect lifting techniques● Aging etc

Spinal Disc problems are diagnosed by taking x-rays.

Most of the problems does not need treatment. They may require a long term rest.Other treatment options are,

● Exercise● Pain relieving medications● Anti-inflammatory steroid injections● Heat Treatments● Non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs● Surgery(Micro Endoscopic Procedures)
