Another show is about to begin as part of The Huron Playhouse summer tradition promoting theater education, and we welcome you to this sixty-eighth edition of quality Playhouse entertainment. The onstage performance reflects the hard work of so many people on stage and behind the scenes that help us achieve our mission to bring theater to life by creating experiences that inspire, transform, and entertain you. Let us never forget that YOU, our loyal audience member and supporter, are important in making possible every opening curtain. We trust your experience with us will show how The Playhouse remains an important asset for education and entertainment in our community . . . and you will want to come back!

The Huron Playhouse has been an independent 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation since 2011, and we have relied on the generosity of many members from our extended community for the privilege of continuing our mission into the future. On behalf of our Board of Directors, I thank all our generous supporters, including area foundations, business friends, local government, volunteers, the Huron City Schools and, most significantly, contributing individuals like YOU who value live theater performed by talented young people who want to make it their life’s work. We also pay tribute to our highly talented, caring professional team members who help us realize our vision of educating and enlightening youth and adults about all aspects of theater performance and operations as we entertain the residents and visitors to our region in the quality productions you will find so entertaining.

Now sit back and enjoy what I like to call the magic of The Huron Playhouse and the excellence your support has helped us bring to our community for sixty-eight entertaining years . . . let the show begin!

The Huron Playhouse is the oldest continuing summer theatre in the State of Ohio. The Playhouse is recognized nationally as a premiere summer theatre with the goal of “bringing theatre to life.” In the process we provide experiences for some of the nation’s finest young actors, singers, dancers, technicians, directors, and designers.

The Playhouse has a rich and colorful history. In the summer of 1949, under the guidance of Professor Frederick Walsh, the theatre opened its doors for its first season with the lighthearted wartime comedy John Loves Mary. For over half a century, the Playhouse has offered its audiences a well-balanced season of comedies, dramas, musicals, mysteries, and melodramas. In the past 67 years, over one-half million theatre goers have attended over 395 different productions of 295 different shows. There are now more than 1,800 alumni of The Huron Playhouse company.

The mission of the Playhouse has always been to provide student-artists with production opportunities that allow them to develop the skills, abilities, techniques, attitude, and spirit

necessary for success in the theatre world. The Playhouse has always welcomed community involvement from children and adults of all ages, while giving our loyal audiences top-notch entertainment at popular prices.

The goal of the Playhouse is to maintain a constant commitment to high quality. Four full-scale productions are mounted in an intensive seven-week period, each show enjoying a four-night run.

Playhouse alumni have gone on to perform on Broadway, in regional theatre, television, feature films, theme/amusement parks, and commercials. Many have employed their talents and skills to the design and technical aspects of play production. Others have completed the educational theatre cycle by becoming distinguished teachers of theatre or film.

The Playhouse operation includes approximately 45 members, including actors, directors, designers, technicians, and administrative staff. The Playhouse provides room and board and a stipend to company members.

The human experience of living in dorm-style rooms, eating, working, and creating together has fostered a family atmosphere that many have found hard to leave behind at the end of the summer. Lifelong friendships, business associations, professional connections, and marriages have resulted from summers at The Huron Playhouse.

The Playhouse is conveniently located an hour west of Cleveland and an hour east of Toledo, in the Heart of Vacationland. The historic McCormick School has been our home for all 68 years. It’s a mere two blocks from the beautiful shores of Lake Erie.

The Ohio Historical Society, in 2001, recognized The Huron Playhouse and its long-time partnership with the Huron community by placing a permanent historical marker in front of the McCormick building. We at the Playhouse are committed to entertaining future generations for years to come.

THE PLAYHOUSE STORY “I have spent a lifetime holding moonlight in my hands, having April in my eyes…,” said Frederick Walsh, founder of The Huron Playhouse. From his participation in the founding years of such notable summer theatres as The Lost Colony on Roanoke Island, North Carolina, to North Dakota’s Custer Memorial Amphitheatre in Mandran, The Burning Hills Amphitheatre in Medora, and Ohio’s oldest summer theatre, The Huron Playhouse, he was a man who turned dreams into theatres. May his dreams continue on for years…

Welcome to The Huron Playhouse’s 2016 season!

It is an exciting time to be at The Huron Playhouse. As a patron, you are the most pivotal part of our family, appreciating and supporting the phenomenal artistry of The Huron Playhouse that has been a tradition for 68 years.

A Chorus Line, the Pulitzer Prize and Tony award-winning classic musical; The Birds, a suspenseful stage adaptation from the story that inspired a legendary Hitchcock film; Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, the hysterical recipient of the 2013 Tony award for Best Play; and Little Shop of Horrors, one of the most popular musical comedies ever written, make up a riveting selection of shows, which we are extremely proud to offer to you. We are also thrilled to bring our audiences a piece of theatre history this season as our production of A Chorus Line will feature the original costumes worn in the Broadway production designed by Tony and Academy Award Winner Theoni V. Aldredge, and the Playhouse’s season closer of Little Shop of Horrors will stage the screamingly funny, out-of-this-world hit musical with the plant puppets designed by Martin P. Robinson of the Jim Henson Company, based on the original Off-Broadway production designs.

As Ohio’s oldest continuing summer theatre, the Playhouse has been going through exhilarating changes in our transformation as a professional summer stock theatre. As we explore our newfound mission “to create experiences that inspire, transform, and entertain,” we are stronger than ever since we have recruited artistic talent who have served in various capacities on Broadway, Off-Broadway, National Tours, major regional theatres across the county, and top academic programs to create this inspiring season especially for you. Our presence in the national theatre scene has been thriving recently thanks to the support from patrons like you as our 2015 season production of Footloose was the recipient of seven Broadway World Cleveland Awards, including Best Production of a Musical.

As the Playhouse moves onward into the future, we look forward to you, the audience, joining us on our artistic journey. You are the final component to our season, and we hope that you enjoy everything that we have to offer. Thank you for being an integral part of our community and supporting our new artistic endeavor at The Huron Playhouse.

As we celebrate our 68th season, we must thank each individual donor, business and foundation who have offered their generous support! Proceeds from ticket sales alone do not sustain our overall organization; therefore, we must build upon our mission and commitment to the community to expand the performing arts and educational outreach that was our founding vision. 100th Anniversary of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act

Migratory birds, such as the gulls featured in Daphne du Maurier’s 1952 short story “The Birds” do not recognize geo-political boundaries during their annual cycle of reproduction, foraging, and migration. Thus, successful conservation efforts to protect birds must be carried out at the international level. In 1916, the United States and Great Britain (on behalf of Canada) signed a convention to protect migratory birds in North America, the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA). This landmark treaty was implemented in an era when many bird species were threatened by the commercial trade in birds and bird feathers. As a notable example, the last passenger pigeon died in 1914 in the Cincinnati Zoo. This was a species whose numbers reached into the billions in the mid-19th century and often darkened the skies of Ohio during migration. Market hunting and habitat destruction doomed them to extinction.

The MBTA has been hailed by biologists and politicians alike as the most influential legislation ever enacted to protect wildlife, and it has served as a model for nations worldwide. The MBTA now also includes Mexico, Russia and Japan as signatories and protects over 800 species of birds that migrate among the five countries. So without the MBTA, we would likely not be enjoying The Huron Playhouse rendition of “The Birds”. Enjoy, but don’t look up!
