Chapter Mission

We are students from 04 Cameroonian Universities. There are the University of Yaounde1, the

University of Ngaoundéré, the University of Douala and the University of Dschang. All of us

together run organization in Cameroon, representing SPIE, which is an international society

advancing an interdisciplinary approach to the science and application of light. Our mission is to

advance light based technologies and help support its associated community through participation

and organization of activities such as seminars, outreach projects, social events. Provide exciting

educational, networking and learning experience in the field of optics and photonics. This mission

is conducted by each University in its region which allows the recruitment of new members in the

local chapter based in this University. At the end of each year, SPIE Cameroon Student Chapter

organizes a national seminar or conference through Cameroon physical society’s support. During

this national seminar or conference, there is a special officers (national) meeting where a statement

of the chapter and the planning for new activities are debated. Our aim is to nurture intellectual,

social and professional growth for each of our members, through seminars and networking

opportunities facilitated by SPIE.

Monthly Meeting

The monthly meeting of SPIE student chapter Cameroon takes place one time each month at the

Laboratory of Modeling, Simulation in Engineering, Biomimetics and Prototypes. During these

meeting we discuss about our research projects, the evolution of optics and the photonics in the

international scientific community and we see how we can easily sensitize people about those

disciplines. Some pictures of our meeting are presented below.

Outreach and recruitment Activities

As listed in our missions, we have a paramount concern to sensitize Cameroonians on the fields of

optics and photonics, and for this reason every year since the creation of the Students Chapters

OSA (Optical Society of America) and SPIE in Cameroon, we did trips in the Cameroon territory

in order to sensitize as maximum as possible populations. In 2015, awareness of people and

recruitment of members were done during various organized events. We had organized 04 major

events during that year. The first activity took place at a cultural center called “Cercle Bansoa”.

The second event took place at a school complex called “Complexe Scolaire Sources I, II, III, IV

and Messa Vallée”.The third event took place in a NGO (Non-Governmental Organization) called

"Bureau -Lumiere " located at Mbankolo quarter and the last one took place during the conference

organized by the Cameroon physical society. The representation in images of these events is made

in the following sections.

scientists.

Other activity, during which, we (SPIE Student Chapter Cameroon) mentioned that we were in the framework of the IYL: the

conference organized by the Cameroon Physical Society. We have here, a family photo where appear accompanied young

Cameroonian researchers and the members of the chapter wearing black T-shirts and of course by some senior physicists from

Cameroon and abroad. Our advisor Prof Paul Woafo is at the right-side of Mrs. Rolande Tsapla (in black T-Shirt and holding

the number 2).

Details of planned activities for the future

We will continue with our activities including monthly meeting, seminars, lab tours, outreach

activities, recruiting members. We plan to invite a guest speaker from France. We also plan to invite members to the PhD defence of two members of our Chapter Mr Geraud Goune and Mr

Francis Talla. Build platforms of exchange among student chapters under SPIE, OSA and IEEE in Cameroon. We also plan to send a member (Miss Boubakari Maimounatou), to represent the chapter to the SPIE Photonics Europe.
