Spider (Short) - Analysis

CameraSpider opts for a low-budget documentary style of filmmaking. Unsteady frames and unnatural angles creates a sense of dread and unease. This style of filmmaking allows the audience to become deeply invested in what’s happening on screen because of the authenticity of the shots. The short begins slowly, with a couple who have seemingly fallen out, driving along an unknown road. Shots are held for a long time to create tension, which makes the ending more shocking once all the tension has been relieved.

EditingEditing is crucial to overall effect the ending has upon the audience. Luckily, the editing in Spider is spot on. The camera moves and cuts with precision that the needle in eye sequence looks genuinely real. However, this is down to good prosthetics and effective use of editing.

Mise-en-sceneThe importance of mise-en-scene takes a backseat when it comes to Spider. The lighting is fairly dark, although its set during day time, this might be to highlight the dark nature of the film. Also, the man and woman are dressed in normal, everyday clothing, which suggests they are middle class citizens which makes the events more horrifying because the average audience member can relate to the characters.
