NCAA POSTSEASON HISTORY

1972Led by first-year head coach Chuck Boone and Reggie Dunnavant, who served as team captain, the Spiders recorded a school-re-cord 21 victories.

The Spiders captured the Southern Confer-ence title, the Big Five title and received a bid to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history.

The NCAA’s District 3 Tournament was held at Gastonia, N.C., and pitted the Spiders against in-state rival and ACC champion Vir-ginia in a first-round matchup where they fell, 18-2.

In the second round, the Spiders faced Flor-ida State, falling 10-5, and eliminating them from the tournament.

Boone earned Southern Conference Coach of the Year and Dunnavant claimed the league’s MVP award.

1986The 1986 Richmond squad finished the sea-son 24-31, but was able to win the inaugural CAA Tournament title and earn an automat-ic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Ron Atkins’ squad included 11 freshmen, five of whom started.

In the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Stillwater, Okla., the Spiders fell to Okla-homa State, 20-8. Richmond then faced Or-egon State in the elimination game. The Spi-ders bats were stifled all day, as the Beavers combined for a two-hitter to advance, 7-1.

1995The 1995 Spiders finished with a 43-17 over-all record and earned a berth in the NCAA East Regional at Clemson, S.C. The Spiders were led by head coach Ron Atkins, who notched his 300th victory in a win over Rad-ford during the season

Leading the way offensively was Casey, who finished the season as the nation’s leading hitter with a .461 average. He went on to be named the CAA and ECAC Player of the Year, and became the first player in the history of the CAA to win the league’s triple crown.

The culmination of the season was the NCAA East Regional, where Richmond was seeded fourth. In the first round against Jacksonville, Richmond jumped out to an 8-0 lead with a six-run eighth inning and cruised to an 8-2 victory.

After spotting Winthrop four runs in the first, Richmond battled back in its second-round game and took an 8-4 lead into the bottom of the eighth. Winthrop responded with five runs in the inning and held on for a dra-matic 9-8 triumph.

The Spider’s final matchup was against Al-abama. The Crimson Tide pitchers allowed just four hits in the game and Richmond was eliminated with an 11-4 loss.

1997Richmond’s 1997 baseball team finished on an upswing, capturing the Colonial Athletic Association Championship and earning a berth in the NCAA Atlantic Regional.

As the sixth-seed in the Atlantic Region, Richmond drew top-seeded Miami on its home field. The Hurricanes jumped out to a 6-0 lead after three innings and cruised to an 11-4 victory.

Immediately following the Miami game, the Spiders faced Big East Champion St. John’s in an elimination game. The Red Storm took a 4-0 lead after two innings. Richmond scored a pair in the fifth and took the lead in

the seventh on its way to a 10-4 win to ad-vance to face the Gators the following day.

Florida scored 11 times in the third inning on its way to a 16-2 win to end Richmond’s season.

1998It was another record-breaking year as the Spiders recorded the third most wins in school history (41) en route to their third NCAA Tournament appearance in four years.

Richmond also garnered its second-straight CAA Championship. The Spiders swept through the conference tournament unde-feated becoming the first school in confer-ence history to win back-to-back titles with-out losing a game.

The Spiders trailed 19th-ranked Baylor in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, 6-0, after one inning and through five in-nings, trailed 9-0. A three-run homer by John Wagler in the sixth closed the gap to 9-4. The Spiders added four more runs over the next two innings and trailed 10-8 head-ing into the top of the ninth. Nic Jackson led off with a solo shot to cut the gap to 10-9. The Spiders were down to their last out when Jeff Kenney, facing a 2-1 count with runners on first and second, unleashed a shot over the leftfield fence which sent Spi-der fans in a frenzy. gave Richmond a 12-10 victory.

Richmond advanced to face Wake Forest and held a 4-1 lead through five innings, but the Demon Deacons stormed back to claim a 6-5 win. The Spiders fell the next day to host Florida, 15-3, eliminating them from the tournament.

1999Richmond matched its third highest total for wins in a season (41) on the way to its fourth NCAA Tournament appearance in five years.

Richmond went 2-2 in the CAA Tournament but received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and the Winston Salem Re-gional.

The Spiders faced third-seeded Virginia Tech in the first round. Mike Smith went the distance for Richmond, allowing six hits, three runs, four walks and striking out seven in Richmond’s 5-3 win over the Hokies. Nate Rewers was 3-for-5 with one run and one RBI. His diving stop in the top of the first al-lowed the Hokies to score just one run after loading the bases with no outs.

Top-seeded Wake Forest blitzed the Spiders in the second round for a 12-1 victory.

The Spiders outscored Virginia Tech, 11-8, in the third round matchup. Mike Dwyer homered in the first, his 21st of the season and the 100th for Richmond, a school re-cord. The Hokies took a 7-6 advantage in the fourth before Richmond fought back for the win.

Mark Fisher was masterful in Richmond’s next game against Wake Forest, going 6.2 innings with six hits, three runs, no walks and two strikeouts helping the Spiders win, 9-3. Wake Forest went on to capture the Championship game, 13-3, ending Rich-mond’s season.

2002Richmond recorded its most prolific season in the program’s history. The Spiders (53-13) set eight team and 11 individual records on their way to the NCAA Super Regional.

Richmond posted a 46-8 regular season mark and 22-2 in the Atlantic 10. Richmond claimed the regular-season Atlantic 10 West Division title and its seventh trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Richmond entered the Regional as the No. 2 seed in Winston-Salem, N.C. Mike McGirr advanced the Spiders to the finals of the Winston-Salem Regional after earning his 10th consecutive win of the season, 15-5 over Navy. Richmond took a 3-2 win over Wake Forest in the first game of the champi-onship series to advance to the final against

the Demon Deacons. Wake Forest forced a second game with its 5-4, 10-inning, win. The Spiders then clinched their first-ever Regional title in a 7-5 victory.

Entering the program’s first Super Region-al, Richmond invaded Hawks Field at Hay-market Park in Lincoln, Neb., for a three-game series against Nebraska. The Huskers grabbed the first win in front of a record 8,474 fans, 2-0. The Spiders rallied back in the second game to take the victory 6-2. Vito Chiara-valloti belted a one-out grand slam in the bottom of the ninth to break the 2-2 tie and give Richmond the win. Richmond fell in the final game, 11-6, just one game away from the College World Series. Pritz tied the game, 5-5, in the bottom of the seventh with a two-run home run, but Nebraska erupted for a five–run eighth to regain control.

2003Richmond posted a 48-15 overall record and a 19-4 record in the Atlantic 10. The Spiders claimed their first-ever Atlantic 10 Championship and earned their eighth trip to the NCAA Tournament.

The Spiders captured the program’s first Atlantic 10 crown in a two-game sweep of UMass at Pitt Field, 8-0 and 7-4. With the series’ win, the Spiders received the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Traveling further than any other Richmond baseball squad in postseason history, the Spiders headed to Palo Alto, Calif., and the Stanford Regional. After a 10-8 loss to UC-Riverside, Mike McGirr posted his 10th win of the season as he led Richmond to a 5-0 shutout against Illinois-Chicago, giv-ing the Spiders a rematch with Riverside. Richmond’s 14 hits led the squad to an 8-2 victory and a date against Stanford in the Regional final. Playing their highest-ranked opponent of the season, the Spiders fell to the host and third-ranked Cardinal, 19-6.
