ENTERPRISE

Abstract

StreetProjectFoundationsinceinceptionin2008hasimpactedthelivesofover1,000underprivilegedyoungpeoplelivinginurbanslumsofLagos.Thiswasachievedbyprovidingthemwithplatformstoshowcasetheirtalents,scholarshipsandsocialamenitieslikewater.ThroughoneofourinitiativescalledProjectRaw,wehaveimpactedthelivesofyoungpeopleusingperformancetraining,platformsforexpressionandmentoring.Someoftheseyoungcreativeshavegoneontomakeacareerusingtheirdiscoveredtalents.However,werecognizedagapinourmodel,whichistheneedforlifeskillstrainingasquiteanumberofthemhaveexperiencedchallengestransitioningfromtalentdevelopmenttoenterprisehencethebirthoftheStreetProjectCreativeYouthBootCamp.StreetProjectCreativeYouthBootCampisacapacitybuildinginitiative,aimedataddressingthesechallengesbygroomingperformanceinclinedyouthsfromlow-incomebackgroundsonbasicconceptsthatwillhelpthemconverttheirtalenttoincome.ThefirsteditiontookplacebetweenAprilandJune2016,impactingthelivesof100youngpeople.Ourgoalgoingforwardistoimpactthelivesofanadditional100youngpeopleby2017year-end,engagingtheminexclusiveworkshopsonindustryrelatedtopicsandafieldtrip.Thebootcampisalsoexpectedtogivethebesttraineesanopportunityforaone-monthinternshipattheleast,withcreativebasedorganizations.Ourproposalrequests$9,000toobtainthespace,trainingfacilitiesandlogisticsnecessaryforStreetProjectFoundationtoorganizethebootcamp.Theapplicationformforthebootcampisdesignedasaquestionnairetocollectasmuchdataabouttheparticipantsaspossiblesothatwecanassessimpactovertimethroughourmonitoringandevaluationprocess.Feedbackformswillalsobedistributed,collectedandcollatedaftereachsessionforqualityassessmentofsessionsandfacilitators.

StreetProjectFoundationisaSocialEnterprisethatusesperformingartsasatooltofacilitateopportunitiesforyouthemploymentandengagement.Itcaterstoyoungpeoplefromlow-incomebackgroundsthatarepassionateaboutanyformofperformanceart.Theorganizationwasfullyregisteredin2014however;ithasbeeninoperationsince2008. Webelievethatyoungpeoplecanmakeasustainablelivingdoingwhattheylove.

Issue/TargetPopulation

AlthoughtheNationalYouthPolicydefines'youth'asyoungpeoplefrom18-35years,webelievethatyoungpeoplestartshowingpromisemuchearlier.Over62%ofNigeriansliveinextremepovertywithyouths35yearsandunderconstitutingabout70%ofthepopulationofNigeria(SaharaReporters).Lagosalonehad18million,asatApril2014(CIAFactbook).Manyyoungpeople(22.9%)migratedfromtheruraltotheurbanareaslikeLagosinsearchofjobs(NationalBureauofStatistics,2012).Thelackthereofputunemploymentrateat23.9%asat2011(CIAFactbook).Youthsgetrestlessalltooeasilyandiflefttotheirowndevicesareseeninungovernedareasatoddtimes,whichbreedescalatingcasesofindiscipline,abuseandcrime.StreetProjectFoundationisallaboutpreparingtheunderprivilegedyouthtonavigatethroughexistingopportunitiesandcreatingnewopportunitiesforthem.Iftheseyoungpeoplearenotgivenanopportunitytoimprovetheirtalent,theywillbemorelikelytoengageinunrulybehaviorandremaininpoverty.Weaimtohelpalleviatepovertythroughyouthengagementandemploymentusingperformingartsasatool.Ourfocusisonlessprivilegedyouthsfrom13-25.Withourinitiatives,youngpeoplediscoverthattheydon'thavetobemarginalizedandtheycanstillmakesomethingworthwhileofthemselvesdespitetheirlackofinfluentialconnectionsandlimitededucation.Inthenextthreeyears,weplantoimpact500livesandbyextension,millionsoflives.In2015wetrained50youthsthroughthepiloteditioncalledReflectionSeries,in

2016weengaged100youthsandin2017wearelookingatreplicatingandsurpassingourachievementsof2016.Withaprojectednumberof500youngStreetProjectAmbassadorsfullyengaged,wewouldhavesecuredaviablemovementofyoungpeoplewhothroughthediscoveryofselfthatPerformingArtsoffers,areearningalivingandsecureinthemselves.Theywouldalsoembodytherightvalues,whichwillinturnhavearippleeffectontheircommunities,therebyfosteringgeometricgrowthofvaluedrivenyouthambassadorsinNigeria.CurrentPrograms

OuractivitiesfollowoursimplemodelcalledtheYouthEngagementCycle.Rawtalents,mostlyfromdeprivedareasofLagos,butgiftedinanyformofperformingarts,arefirstdiscovered.Wethenauditionandtrainthemsothattheycanrefinetheirtalents.Reflectionsessionsareorganizedwheretheylearnlifeandworkskills.Theshowcaseandmentoringstageshelpintheirself-discoveryandexpression,inspiringthemtoearnwiththeirtalentsorelsewhereinthelabormarketiftheydiscoverthattheartsisn'tforthem.(a)Project Raw:ThisinitiativeseeksandidentifiesrawtalentsonthestreetsofLagos.Theyaredocumented,shortlistedandinvitedforauditioning.Inthepast,weheldcompetitionswherethewinnerswerepairedwithcelebritiesintheartsforayear'smentoring,duringwhichperiodicreportsweresenttous.Weareworkingonafeaturefilm,whichwillbetheexcitingnewdirectiontoshowcasethesetalentsaftertrainingthroughtheReflectionsessionsandinternships.(b)A Smile for December:Thisinitiativewascreatedtogivehopetoyouthsandchildrenlivingincharityhomes.Itwasalsoconceivedtosearchwithinthesocietyforgenuinebenevolenthumanitarianswhoneedhelpandsupportincateringforthewellbeingofyouthsandchildrenintheircare.Selectionofcharityhomesthatbenefitfromthisprojectisbasedontheextentoflimitedresources,fundingandcarefortheyoungpeopleinthehome.Wesearchforcharityhomesthatlacksupportandcallfordonationsthroughoursocialmediaplatformstogivetothehomes.SometimeswearrangeforaChristmaspartytoinspireandgiveroomfortheyoungpeopleinthehometoexpressthemselvesfreely.Oneofourimpactprojectswastheinstallationofboreholewaterinahomehousingover167mentallyillwomenandtheirchildren.(c)The Haven Project: SeeingthatasmileforDecemberonlycateredfortheneedsofyouthslivingincharityhomes,itwasnecessarytofollow-uponthehomesimpacted.We

adoptahomeforaminimumofoneyearinwhichweattempttomeettheirpressingneedsandlendsupporttothemduringtheperiodoftheiradoptionaswellasmonitorprogressanddeliveronsuchneeds.

Partnerships

Qdance Center-QdanceCenterisaperformingartsacademybeingrunbyacouple,QudusandHajaratOnikeku.Theirfocusisonyoungpeoplebetween13-25yearsandtheirinitiativesarechanneledtowardsempoweringandengagingyouthsinactivitiestheylovethatwillhelpthemfindexpression.Basedonthesecloselyrelatedfocusareasandstrengths,wedecidedtocollaborateintheareaofpracticalperformancetraininganddevelopmentofourStreetProjectAmbassadors.Theygiveusastatusreportofthedevelopmentofourambassadorsonscholarship. Wave Academy-WestAfricaVocationalEducationisaSocialEnterpriserunbyMisanRewane,aHarvardGraduateandanEchoingGreenfundrecipient.TheLagos-basedorganizationfocusesontrainingyoungpeoplebetween18-35yearsforthreeweeksandplacingtheminentry-leveljobsinthehospitalityandretailsectors.Theyoffertrainingscholarshipstoourambassadorswhodiscovertheirpathisn'tnecessarilyintheperformingarts.All Stars Project New York -AllStarshavebeenhelpfulingivingusinformationonwaystogrowthefoundationhereinNigeria,asourmodelsforyouthdevelopmentaresimilar.TwomembersofStreetProjectFoundationstaffhavevisitedonanexchangeprogramtoinspireandfacilitatethedesignoffutureprojects.WealsoareworkingongettingresourcepersonsfromAllStarstovisitNigeriasoon.

Curriculum

Thisbootcampwasdesignedasapreparationofgiftedyoungpeoplewhocomefromachallengedsocio-economicbackground.Webelieveinthecultivationofimaginativeandcreativeworkandthedevelopmentofcritical-thinkingskillsthatyoungpeopleneedtostarttheirpersonaljourneyofself-discovery,learning,curiosityandcommunityengagement.Theseskills,acquiredduringthecourseofthebootcamp,aretransferrable.Thepurposeofthesesessionsisaimedtowardsachievingthefollowinggoals:

1. Tohonetherawtalentofthegiftedyoungpeople2. Toencouragetheircriticalthinking3. Toencouragetheirbehavioralchange

Weappreciatetheobviouschallengeoftryingtocondensetheexperiencegatheredovermanyyearsintoafewclasses.Thiscurriculumthereforespecifiesthemajorobjectivestobecoveredbythefacilitatorsintheirsessions.Eachsessionshouldincludeawarm-up,discussionandexercise.Thesearekeypracticeswhichcanbecompletedinclassorathome.Thecurriculumisdividedintosixmainareasintheperformingarts&willbeaddressedatthebootcampnamely:

Communicationexerciseswillalsobeincludedatdifferentpointsas‘sirensessions’tohelpthestudentswithdiction,poiseandconfidence.Thesesessionswillnotgivestudentsmuchtimetopreparesothatnaturallyorganicresponseswillbeemployed.MOVEMENTANDDANCE

Attheendofthebootcamp,studentswilldemonstratetheirunderstandingofthefundamentalsofdancecomposition.Thiswillbeassessedbystudentscomposingoriginalpiecesafterthefollowingobjectiveshavebeenmet:PARTA:BEING

1. Free-style:Studentswilllearnabouttechniqueandfree-styling2. Composing:Studentswillintegratefocus,expression,andunityintotheir

positioningofselfinspacewhencoordinatingwithagroupaswellasdefiningthefloorpatternsinwhichtheywillmove.

4. Partnering&Inversions:Studentswilllearnabouttheelementsofpartneringandinversions:Counter-weight,focus,safetyprecautions,core-strength,trust,andletting-go.Alsoaboutwhatisimportanttorememberwhenworkingwithapartner.

5. Dissociation&Rhythm:Studentswilllearnaboutsynchronicityandwhateffectitcanhaveonanaudience.

PARTB:SPEAKING

1. Texts&Stories:Studentswilllearninterpretivedance,thatistointerprettextandstorywithmovement.

2. LooseningupBreathing:Studentswillconnecttheirownmovementsandbreathingpatternstotheirownsensationse.g.(laughing,whispering,screaming).

3. Interpretation&Creativity:Studentswillunderstandadancer’spersonalexpressionandthemeaningof“personalinterpretation”ofadanceset.Thisshouldposethequestion“Whatwoulditbelikeifweallmovedinexactlythesameway?”

4. QualitiesofMovement:Studentswillperform,identify,andarticulatevariousqualitiesofthenaturalmovementsthatoccuraroundthem.ThiswillbedoneviatheactivestudyofAnimalmodelingandmovementsoftheinanimateenactingandvocalization(e.g.leakyfaucet,chair,andtypewriter).

5. Rehearsing:Rehearsethecompositionpiece.Thatistogooversynchronicityingroupmoments,fluidityofentriesandexits,personalinterpretationofphrasesandprojection.

1. What’sallthisDrama?:Studentswillhavebrainstormingsessionsonthevariousreasonsfordrama,discoverwhatdynamicsmakeastorydramatic,whysomedetailsarememorableandothersforgettable

2. Focus,ConcentrationandEnergy:Studentswilllearntheimportanceofactorshavingfocusanddevelopingconcentrationwhenmusteringtheenergyforaperformance

3. Setting&Environment:Studentswilldemonstratetheirunderstandingofthepossiblevariablesinsettingandperformactionswithinspecificsettingsandenvironments.Theywillexplorehowdifferentsettingsaffectperformance&moods.
