Twenty-five Nurses Pinned

The pinning ceremony held at the Eugene M.

Hughes metropolitan Complex celebrated the

accomplishments of 25 WSU School of Nursing

(SON) students.

South Central Kansas' only accelerated nursing

program held their pinning ceremony for their

accelerated nursing class on July 06, 2012.

Betty Smith-Campbell, PhD, APRN-CNS,

Chairperson, SON and moderator for the event

told students, “I know it may not seem like it be-

cause of what you have heard or are experienc-

ing in looking for a job, but we have a looming

nursing shortage.

The growing aging population will increase the

need for care. The government predicts a 29%

nursing vacancy rate at hospitals by 2020.”

She also reminded them of the rich history nurs-

es offered to humanity. Smith-Campbell said,

“Florence Nightingale, because of her work and

the work of her fellow nurses in the Crimea war

decreased mortality rates from 42% to just

2%.”

She also told students how their education

would improve their patients’ lives, “Not only

do nurse staff levels make a difference in pa-

tient outcomes, but educational level also

makes a difference.

Nurses prepared at the baccalaureate-level

are linked with lower mortality and failure-to-

rescue rates.” Smith-Campbell added that a

nurse researcher, Dr. Aiken “found that for

every 10% increase in the proportion of BSN

nurses on the hospital staff was associated

with a 4% decrease in the risk of death.”

Dr. Smith-Campbell concluded by saying,

“Today as graduates and future registered

nurses you are called to improve the lives of

your patients, families and our community.”

Julie Lawless receives her nursing pin from Dr. Peggy

Hernandez this summer at the annual pinning ceremony.

Signee Fornshell receives her nursing pin from Dr. Susan

Parsons this summer at the annual pinning ceremony.

It’s not every class that gives students the potential to win $10,000. Rae Lyn Mefford, DNP, APRN-FNC took a practice management course because she had to. It was a required class, one she didn’t want to take and even tried to get out of it. Already owning a business, Mefford did not see the necessity of it.

As part of Dr. Karen Hayes’ class, students were re-quired to write a business plan and enter the 2011 Shocker Business Plan Competition. Mefford wanted to use her existing business as a plan, but had to change it to a new business opportunity that didn’t exist. Once she wrote the plan, she did not expect to go any-where with it. “The judges didn’t understand healthcare,” Mefford said. She also noted that none of the nursing students in the past had done too well. Many of the students in the competition were business students and had studied the field for years.

Despite her concerns, Mefford entered the competition. Making it past the first round, she wanted to earn back the few hundred dollars she had invested, with the help of her father, in her poster and booth. After making it past the second round she said she knew if she didn’t win anything, it would be a huge letdown.

At the banquet, Mefford and her parents were seated in the middle of the room. “My dad said he knew I had

Kathy Winslow, MSN, APRN, ACNP, credits the School of Nursing (SON) and WSU for her success. The for-mer SON student and current president of the Alumni Association says she wants to give back to the school that gave her so much. “WSU changed my life and I could not have done that without the tools WSU provided me.”

A spirited Shocker, Winslow claims the School of Nursing changed her life by providing her with a great educa-tion to becoming a nurse. “I get energy just from walking in the building.”

Winslow helps students stay in touch with their university. She says the Alumni Association is a great way to stay connected to the university with such events as “Rockin’ the Roundhouse” and the “We’re Not Back to School Bash”.

Winslow encourages everyone to get involved in the Alumni Association. “We are there to give back to you. If you need something from this university we are here to help.” She said the organization does not exist to just take Alumni’s money. “If you need something from this university we are here to help.”

Winslow credits the instructors at WSU, both at the SON and throughout the uni-versity as being resources for success. “Once you step foot on campus you feel the pride and dedication of every single instructor.”

One of those instructors and a mentor for Winslow is Director of the Alumni As-sociation, Debbie Kennedy, ‘94. Winslow accredits Kennedy for helping her get involved with the Alumni Association. “She has the same drive I do. When we commit to doing something, we’re all in.”

Winslow encourages students to become involved in the university and urges nursing students to join organizations like the Kansas Association of Nursing Students.

“Everything you need to be successful is right here,” says Winslow.

won by where the table was placed.” Mefford herself wasn’t quite convinced, “When they pulled that blanket off that check, I thought I was going to faint!”

Mefford says winning “was right there at the top days of my life. It’s ranked up there with childbirth.”

The WSU School of Nursing is seeking renewal of accredi-tation for their BSN, MSN and DNP Programs from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). One of the requirements of the CCNE for this procedure is to provide an opportunity for input from affected parties regarding the program’s qualification for accreditation sta-tus. Any constituent of the nursing program may submit in writing comments to be shared with members of the evalu-ation team prior to the site visit which will take place No-vember 7-9, 2012. The evaluation team will consider third-party comment in regards to the accreditation standards and will at no time during the review process share those comments with the program. Comments will be accepted by CCNE until October 8, 2012. All comments must be signed and should be directed to: Cristina Walcott, Admin-istrative Assistant Commission on Collegiate Nursing Edu-cation, One Dupont Circle, NW, Suite 530, Washington, DC 20036.

Support Wichita State University School of Nursing

The School of Nursing’s mission is to improve the health of the community by inspiring change in health care through innovation and excellence in nursing education, scholarship, practice, and ser-vice. Your gift helps us live out our mission. Even though Wichita State University is state as-sisted, the needs of our students, faculty and staff are well above what support the state provides. The WSU Foundation fills that gap by accepting private support from corporations, foundations and individ-uals. Donors provide undergraduate scholarships, graduate fellowships, endowed professorships, fac-ulty support, equipment upgrades and more. You can make a tax-deductible contribution by go-ing to www.wichita.edu/give and on the first page, select “Please direct my gift to:” and then type in School of Nursing. Then, select a pre-determined amount or type one in. For more information, contact Lynette Murphy, sen-ior director of development, at (316) 978-3441 or [email protected].
