Respiratory Protection StandardsThe use of respirators in the workplace is regulated byOSHA Respiratory Protection Standard, 29 CFR 1910.134.This standard requires an appropriate respirator programbe established, which includes: a written program, employeetraining, respirator fit testing, medical monitoring, programdocumentation and maintenance.

Respiratory Training ProgramSperian offers a complete respirator training program to assist your facility in achieving compliance with OSHAregulations. Materials include:

How does OSHA MedCert work?

• Respiratory program managers purchase OSHA MedCert access codes through your local Sperian distributor.

• Once the distributor provides the access codes, you providethe codes to your employees and they do the rest.

• Each employee will log onto www.sperian.com/OSHAMedCert

• The employee is greeted by a “Welcome” that provides basicinformation about the process. The employee will then clickon the link to start.

• Each employee self-registers into the system and completesOSHA required fields.

• Upon successful completion of the medical evaluation, employees are congratulated and given an opportunity toprint their certificate.

• The entire process takes less than 15 minutes!

How can a respiratory manager track employees’ progress on OSHA MedCert

• The manager of the respiratory program has the ability to login to the administrative side of the system directly from a linkat www.sperian.com. From here, the manager can track activity and run reports on the status of each employee’s medical evaluations.

• From the “Tools” screen on OSHA MedCert, manager cancheck the status of employee evaluations.

• A unique customer code and password gives the manager access to employee activities and status of medical evaluations.

Selecting and Using Particulate Filter Disposable RespiratorsFilter CategoriesThere are nine separate filter categories for particulate respirators detailed in NIOSH 42 CFR 84 regulations.These consist of three separate filter classes (N, R, P) at three separate filter efficiencies (95%, 99%, 99.97%).

N—class particulate respirators — approved for solid and liquid particulates, excluding oils. Time use restrictions may apply.R—class is for both oil and non-oil solid and liquid particulates, with a maximum 8-hour or one shift use, time restrictionswhen used for oil mists.P—class respirator is approved for both oil and non-oil particulates and has no time use restriction.

All respirators used as part of a written respiratory program must follow the requirements set forth in OSHA 1910.134 orCSA standard Z95.4-9. OSHA requires that all respirators, including disposables, be fit tested at least annually. Disposableparticulate respirators can be fit tested using the Bitrex® or Saccharin qualitative fit test method. Disposable filtering facepiecescan also be fit tested quantitatively using a PortaCount machine for N99 and P100, and with the N95 PortaCount Companion for N95.

Used as either a primary airsource or an emergency airsupply, the Survivair Air Cart cancontain up to two independentlyoperating 30, 45, or 60-minutehigh pressure (4500 psig)cylinders, or up to two independentlyoperating 30-minute low pressure (2216 psig)cylinders. An inlet allows a regulated air source to be used withan optional bypass to allow an unregulated air source. This kit enables Survivair PantherSCBA users to utilize supplied airsources easily and conveniently. The kitcontains: a short pigtail hose with a Rectusmale connector on one end and a bareopposite end (for use with Foster,Schrader, or Hansen quick-disconnectcouplings); a strap and retainer whichattach to the Survivair Pantherwaist strap to hold the pigtail andincoming hose line; and a checkvalve which mounts onto the buddy breathing adapter block. SUIT PASS-THROUGH KIT

This NIOSH-certified fitting safely suppliesair to Class A chemical suits, keeping outcontaminants while allowing a quickdisconnect if escape is necessary. Thepass-through can be used with Foster orSchrader quick-disconnect couplings. It isconstructed of stainless steel and brasscomponents to give it maximum resistance tocorrosive chemicals. The pass-through is recommendedfor use with suits of .020” to .080” thickness.

CASCADE SYSTEM

A Cascade System consists of at least two storage cylindersinterconnected by a series of couplings and pigtails. Compressed andpurified Grade “D” (minimum) air stored in the cylinders is drawnoff through a pressure reducing regulator and supplied to the SARsystem at the required pressure level. A manifold can be used whensupplying air for two or more workers. A central filling station,typically located next to the storage cylinders, can provide thecompressed and purified air to the cylinders in the Cascade System.

Pathfinder™

Field trials have shown that SurvivairPathfinder significantly reduces the time tolocate a downed firefighter. Utilizing PULSEultrasound technology, The Pathfinder consistsof three omni-directional transmitters (theBeacons) and a narrowly focused receiver(the Tracker). Fit TestingFit testing has been mandated in the United States since the 1970’s when OSHA implemented its general industry respiratory protection standard, 29 CFR 1910.134. Since, OSHA revised 29 CFR 1910.134, which now contains four qualitative fit test protocols and three quantitative fit test protocols.

Fit testing determines which particular model and size respirator a worker needs so there is minimal seal leakage.

Qualitative (QLFT) v.s. Quantitative Fit Testing (QNFT)There are two fit testing methods: qualitative fit testing and quantitative fit testing. Qualitative fit testing is acceptable formost airborne hazards and quantitative fit testing is required when negative pressure full facepiece respirators are usedfor airborne contaminant concentrations greater than 10 times but not more than 50 times the PEL. How to don your Sperian filtering facepiece respirator. Follow these instructions each time the respirator is worn. Fit Check Instructions.

You must perform the following fit checkeach time the respirator is worn or beforeentering the contaminated area.

Cup the respirator in the hand,allowing the head straps tohang freely.

Hold the respirator under thechin with the nosepiece facingoutwards.

Place the lower head strap aroundthe neck below the ears.

Holding the respirator against theface with one hand, place the tophead strap above the ears, aroundthe crown of the head.

Place hands on each sideof the respirator and move slightlyright, left, up and down, to adjustthe position of the respirator andachieve the most optimal fit onthe face.

• Place both hands over the respiratorwithout disturbing its position.

• If the respirator is not fitted withan exhalation valve, exhale sharply(a positive pressure should be feltinside the respirator).

• If the respirator is fitted with anexhalation valve, inhale sharply(a negative pressure should be feltinside the respirator).

• If you detect air-leaks, readjust thehead straps and/or the nose-piece.

WarningThis respirator helps protect againstcertain contaminants. It may noteliminate the risk of contractingdisease or infection. Misuse mayresult in sickness or death.

Materials which may come intocontact with the wearer’s skin couldcause allergic reactions to susceptibleindividuals.

Separate the respirator so that itis fully open.

Bend the nosepiece so that therespirator forms a cup

Position the bottom edge ofthe respirator under your chinand bring the headbands overyour head.

Position the lower headbandaround the back of your neck.Position the top headband acrossthe crown of your head.

Pull the top straps back to adjustfor a comfortable fit.

Press the nosepiece firmly acrossthe bridge of your nose so thatthe nosepiece conforms to yourfacial contours.

Open the respirator by pushingslightly on both sides.

Shape the nose bridge. Place the respirator under thechin with the chin flap fully open.Holding the respirator against theface, place the lower head straparound the neck below the earsand the top head strap abovethe ears.

This is how the respirator shouldappear when correctly donned.

Mold the nose area to the shapeof the face by pinching the nosebridge from the top to the bottom.

DO NOT use the respirator or enter or stay ina contaminated area under the followingcircumstances:

• Atmosphere contains less than 19.5% oxygen

• Atmosphere contains oil aerosols if usingN protection class respirator

• For protection against gases or vapors

• Contaminants or their concentrations are unknownor immediately dangerous to life or health

• Concentrations or contaminants exceed maximumuse concentrations in applicable OSHA standardsor applicable government regulations or10 times the PEL (Permissible Exposure Limit),whichever is lower

• For sandblasting, paint-spray operations, asbestos

DO NOT modify or misuse the respirator. DO NOT use the respirator with beards or otherfacial hair that interferes with direct contactbetween the face and the edge of the respirator,or any other conditions that may prevent a goodface-seal.

Some of these respirators offer relief from theirritating effects of gases/vapors at nuisance levels(i.e. levels less than the OSHA PEL). Respiratorsagainst nuisance odors / organic vapors are sodesignated by the mark “OV” on the respirator’spackaging and/or on the respirator. Respiratorsagainst nuisance acid gases (e.g. Hydrogen fluoride,Chlorine) are so designated by the mark “AG” onthe respirator’s packaging and/or on the respirator.DO NOT use if levels exceed the PEL.

WARNING: If you cannot achievesatisfactory fit, DO NOT enter thecontaminated area. See your Supervisor.

How to don your Sperian half-mask respirator. Follow these instructions each time the respirator is worn.

Cover the inlet of the cartridges and/orfilters with the palms of your hands oranother suitable item, such as a thinsheet of plastic or rubber. See inset “B”above. When the respirator is equippedwith cartridges, filter retainers may beused as an aid. Alternatively, thecartridges may be removed to performthe fit check. If removed, Sperianrecommends someone other than yourselfreinstall them after a leak-tight fit isachieved. It is difficult for the wearer toreinstall the cartridges without disturbingthe facepiece-to-face seal and todetermine whether the cartridges arecorrectly seated against the facepiece.It is your responsibility to ensure that thefacepiece-to-face seal is not disturbedwhen reinstalling the cartridges andthat each cartridge is sealed against thefacepiece. Inhale gently and hold yourbreath to slightly collapse the facepiece.If air leakage occurs, readjust thefacepiece and headstraps, then retest.If filter retainers are used, DO NOTremove them after the fit check iscompleted. Removing the filter retainersmay shift the facepiece and break thefacepiece-to-face seal.

Fit Check Instructions.

Install cartridges/filters onto the inletports. Hand tighten, but DO NOT overtighten.

Position the bottom of the facepieceas low as possible under the chin whilepositioning the narrow portion of thefacepiece on the bridge of the nose.Position the cradle headband abovethe ears so that it straddles the crownof the head.

Hook the lower headband straps belowthe ears and around the back of the neck.Adjust the upper headband by pullingboth straps at the same time. Adjust thelower headband straps in the samemanner. Adjust the headbands for aleak-tight fit, but DO NOT over tightenthe straps.

For the Blue 1 respirator, you must removethe respirator to adjust the headband strapslides as necessary for a leak-tight fit, butDO NOT over tighten the straps.

Perform a fit check before usingthe respirator.

Loosen the elastic band withoutcompletely pulling the band out ofthe slots in the crown suspension.

Pull gently on the lower neck strap,creating a large loop, and pull it overthe head.

Place the respirator to the face, coveringthe mouth and nose. (The narrow part ofthe facepiece should be over the nose.)Pull the crown suspension over the headand adjust its placement until it iscomfortable.

Using both hands, grasp the free endsof the elastic band and gently pull theelastic straps away from your face untilthe respirator is snug and seatedcomfortably.

Be sure the neckstrap is flat and smoothagainst the back of the neck. To tightenthe neckstrap, make intermediateadjustments at the straps as they exit thetop slots on the yoke. Gently pull the freeends to make final adjustments. DO NOTover tighten the respirator to your face.

Perform a fit check before usingthe respirator.Survivair Premier®


Make sure the lower headbands areadjusted at the yoke. Remove protectiveeyewear, and place the respirator underthe chin and over the nose. The narrowpart of the facepiece should be locatedover the nose.

Pull the crown strap over the head andadjust its placement until it iscomfortable. The crown strap isadjustable in length for ease of fit.

Using both hands, hook the lowerheadband straps together behind theneck. Adjust the headbands by pullingsideways away from the hook and loop.

DO NOT adjust at the facepiece yoke.

Adjust the upper headbands by pullingthen downwards from the crown straps.DO NOT adjust the headbands or tensionat the yoke. Continue adjusting theheadbands until a comfortable fit hasbeen obtained. DO NOT over tighten therespirator to the face.

Excess lengths of upper straps may besecured out of the way by using the clipsmolded into the crown straps. Use ofthese tabs also helps to reduce thepossibility of headband slippage.


Survivair Premier® Plus


With cartridges or filters attached,fit facepiece on the bridge of the noseand swing the bottom of the facepieceinto contact with the chin.

Bring the lower straps of the headbandaround the nape of the neck andattach the hook and ring togetherbehind the head.

Bring the upper straps with the cradleover the crown of the head (above theears) and pull the free ends of the strapsequally on each side until a comfortableand secure fit is obtained.

DO NOT adjust at the facepiece yoke.

Pull the free ends of the lower straps untilthe lower strap is secure.

Adjust the straps just tight enough toprevent any air leaks around thefacepiece. It is not necessary to overtighten the straps. The straps haveadjustable clips to secure the free endsdown onto the middle of the straps aftertightening. To release the straps, first pulloff the free ends held by the clips, thenpush up on the tabs on the buckles withyour thumbs and pull the facepiece awayfrom your face. Unhook the lower straps,and remove the respirator.


Hold the palm of your hand gently overthe exhalation valve outlet. See inset “A”above. DO NOT distort the natural shapeof the facepiece. Exhale gently and holdyour breath to create and maintain aslight positive pressure inside thefacepiece. If air leakage occurs, readjustthe facepiece and headstraps, then retest.

WarningAlways read cartridge labels priorto use to be certain that you havecartridges and/or filters that willprovide the required protection.Filters labeled for protection againstparticulates only shall not be used forgases/vapors, and cartridges labeledfor protection against gases/vaporsonly shall not be used for particulates.Both cartridges/filters must be of thesame type. The failure to comply withthis warning may lead to personalinjury, illness, or death.• Never remove the respirator for

any reason while you are in thework area.

• You must leave the work areaimmediately if the facepiece-to-faceseal is disturbed for any reason,such as:a. Slipping due to excessive

sweating or excessive headmovement.

b. The facepiece becomesdislodged as a result of beingknocked.

c. You sneeze or cough whilewearing the facepiece.

d. You need to blow your nose,scratch covered areas of yourface, or need to adjust yourspectacles kit.

e. For any other reason that wouldcause the facepiece seal to bedisturbed.

• You must restore the facepiece-to-face seal and perform a fit check ina non-hazardous environmentbefore reentering the work area.

• The failure to comply with thiswarning may lead to seriouspersonal injury, serious illness,or death.

WARNING: If you cannot achievesatisfactory fit, DO NOT enter thecontaminated area. See your Supervisor.

• Once the distributor provides the access codes, you providethe codes to your employees and they do the rest.

• The employee is greeted by a “Welcome” that provides basicinformation about the process. The employee will then clickon the link to start.
