Objectives:Gain experience by working in the architecture industry in the Phoenix area. I am interested in learning how the architectural process works and how to ensure that the built project achieves the original designed intention. I want to learn the language of architecture; how a space can communicate through light, materials, and scale. I intend to fulfill my IDP hours and become a licenced architect.

Forgotten Foundersmemorial cemetery and history centerThis project is located adjacent to the Pioneer and Military Memorial Park downtown Phoenix. Since its last burial in 1914 most of the grave markers have been stolen or destroyed. Walking the dirt pathways through the site is the only way to know that there are no graves beneath your feet. This project is designed to honor the city’s early founders with a cultural center for education and community gathering, a memorial wall, as well as burial plots for influential Phoenicians.

This project taught me a valuable method of designing. The approach began with analysis of the history of the site and combined it with the program for the new interventions. This process helped me infuse the project with meaning and depth. I was also able to refine my 3D rendering and Photoshop skills to produce many of the graphics.

Patina 24multigenerational housingLocated along the light rail corridor on 19th Ave and Camelback Rd this multi generational housing complex is designed to provide an integrated living experience for its residents. The ground floor includes parking, a gym, and community center while the upper levels have alternating one and two bed apartments.

Through this project I studied the rituals of living, the experiences of everyday life, and learned to create spaces to accommodate them. I learned about zoning and building codes and how they influence the design of a project. I was also able to improve my sense of scale.

As a collaborative project for our structures class Dean Feldhausen and I designed this tree house. We were to design a tree house supported by one, two or three trees, it had to be 524 sf and include a great room, washroom, sleeping space and a viewing deck. We chose to locate the project on the bank of Mitchell Lake, high up in the Colorado Mountains.

Through this project I learned how to calculate seismic and wind forces and design a simple truss. I was also able to refine my model making skills by constructing the basswood structural model.

This group project began with an experimental exercise inspired by Richard Long’s land art. Just as many of Long’s pieces drew attention to a particular feature of the landscape, our installation creates an artificial horizon line as well as highlights the boundary between the meadow and the forest. The program of the project is an off the grid nature retreat center including a dining hall, community center, as well as summer and winter cabins. My focus was the design of the cabins and the boardwalk.

After meeting with our client, 180° design+build, and hearing what they wanted for their new office and shop space I analyzed and diagrammed the program information that came out of our conversation. The project is designed to bring the office and the fabrication shop together while still offering some separation. Another challenge was to infuse the project with the personality of the client and design a space to accommodate their unique office culture.

This project was a good exercise in understanding a client’s needs and aspirations and translating them into a specific program for their building. I was also able to take the programing diagram and derive a clear architectural concept from it that met the client’s needs and manifested into an interesting piece of architecture.

This project was the result of an investigation of workstation design. It began with an analysis of the workspace needs of a design professional in a collaborative office setting. The program includes a space for computer work, a drafting table, and a table for model building. This project addresses those needs with a flexible workstation unit that can be deployed throughout the office in collaborative groups. The various parts of the unit fold out from the core similarly to the tools of a Swiss Army Knife.

From this project I learned about the workspace needs of a design professional. I also gained a better understanding of the ergonomics of the workstation and the space requirements of a collaborative office space. This project was also an exercise in fitting multiple components into a very compact footprint.

These drawings are an exploration in composition and tone. The process began with the search for an idea. I broke lightbulbs and painted them to reduce them to their most basic form.

Throughout my education model making has been an integral part of my design thinking and process. Working with physical models helps in the critical analysis of space, structure, scale, texture, and other architectural principles.
