Day 1

Our Topic this term is ‘The Age of Iron’. In English we were supposed to be reading a

wonderful book called, ‘The Iron Man’ written by Ted Hughes and illustrated by Chris Mould.

While it is very difficult to share the whole book, we will look at extracts and illustrations.

You might even have a copy of the story at home or even the cartoon film version – The Iron

Giant.

1. English Starter Activity - PDF

2. Open ‘The Iron Man’ PDF and Read the first page of the story. Look carefully at the

illustrations and think carefully about the questions. Talk through your ideas with

someone at home.

3. Take a page of your book and draw a quick sketch of the Iron Man. (Set yourself a

five-minute time limit for drawing.) Around your picture write some your answers to

the questions. What are your first impressions of the Iron Man? Would you like to

meet him? Where is he looking? Fill your page with as many of your thoughts as

possible. A page of sentence starts is included on PDF.

4. Think about your presentation and use the lines to write on. If you draw clouds around

your ideas, write the ideas first and then draw the bubble in pencil

.

Don’t forget your

starter activity – 5

minutes!

Day 2

1. English Starter Activity - PDF

2. Open ‘The Iron Man’ PDF.

3. Think about the Iron Man. If you were to draw him yourself, what would you include?

Re-read the description of him.

How do you know how enormous he is? How does the comparison to a house, its

bedroom and a dustbin help to provide a sense of scale? What else do you know that is

made from iron and metal? His head has been described like a metal dustbin. What

metal objects would you use to depict his ears and his fingers and other parts of his

body? You might find interesting metal items around the house to inspire you.

TASK: Either draw or craft the Iron Man in detail out of household objects and junk.

You could be creative, use real objects to make a picture of the Iron Man and take a

picture. (Do tidy them away after though!) Would you show him on his own or with a

background? You might want to give a sense of size and scale by including features of

the landscape, buildings, boats or people that you would find on the coast. Talk about

your ideas with someone.

4. Once you have finished your Iron Man, write a descriptive paragraph to describe it in

detail. Or write descriptive phrases, strong adjectives and similes to go with your

picture or model.

5. Take a picture and share your learning today. Email the school office or class teacher

through Purple Mash.
