SPELL IT WITH FABRIC LETTERSThis cute kids’ project is easy as A-B-C and 1-2-3! Create a set

of fabric letters and numbers to teach your tots the basics of

spelling and counting. All you need to begin is one package of

colorful 5" squares along with one package of 5" neutral squares

and some single-sided foam stablilzer. Stitch ’em up and sing

the ABCs in style!

1 traceSelect the letters, numbers, or

symbols you’d like to sew from

the paper pattern or download

the free printable templates at

MSQC.CO/FABRICLETTERS.

Stack (1) 5" colorful square

right side up on top of a letter,

number, or symbol—also right

side up. Trace the outline onto the

fabric using a washable marker.

Note: If no light source is

available, you can cut out each

letter from paper before tracing

the outline onto the fabric.

Trace the selected letters,

numbers, or symbols onto the 5"

colorful squares. 1A

2 add stabilizerPress the reverse side of the 5"

colorful squares to the fusible side

of the foam stabilizer following

the manufacturer’s instructions.

Note: Cotton batting and free

fuse powder may be substituted.

If you opt to use cotton batting in

place of fusible foam the finished

project will be thinner.

Cut the foam-backed fabric

squares apart. 2A

3 add backingIf you’re using yardage rather than

precuts, cut the neutral fabric into

5" squares.

Place (1) 5" neutral square against

the foam side of a foam-backed

fabric square. Use free fuse

powder or straight pins to hold

the layers together if desired. 3A

4 sew & trimUse a straight stitch to sew

along the lines you marked

earlier, making sure to backstitch

at both ends. Repeat for all

letters, numbers, and symbols.

Tip: To create sharp corners,

sew to the corner, stop with

your needle down, then lift your

presser foot to rotate the letter.

Lower the presser foot and

continue sewing.

Use pinking shears to cut ¼" away

from the stitched edge of each

letter, number, or symbol. You

may use regular scissors in place

of pinking shears to create a fun,

frayed edge when washed. You

may choose to remove or leave

the inner voids of letters. 4A 4B
