FRAUD ALERT FROM THE OFFICE OF LEE COUNTY SHERIFF MIKE SCOTT

FBI SENDS WARNING OF NEW E-MAIL EXTORTION SCAM June 2016 The Federal Bureau of Investigation is alerting the public about a new e-mail scam circulating the country by criminals using threats of extortion to steal cash from their victims. While at this time the Sheriff’s Office is not aware of any local victims of this scheme, we feel it is important for you to know what to do should you receive one of these e-mails in your inbox. The scam works like this: Individuals receive an e-mail claiming their personal information, such as their name, phone number, address, credit card data and other sensitive details were compromised in one of the recent high-profile data thefts. The scammer threatens to release this information to the “victim’s” social media contacts, family, and friends if a “ransom” is not immediately paid. To prevent this from happening, the recipient of the e-mail must make a payment through Bitcoin, a virtual currency transaction that provides a high degree of anonymity. Demands have varied from anywhere between 2 to 5 bitcoins, or approximately $250 to $1,200. The FBI has posted examples of the e-mails on the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) website, www.ic3.gov along with these safety tips: _ Do not open e-mail or attachments from unknown individuals. _ Do not communicate with the subject. _ Do not store sensitive or embarrassing photos of yourself online or on your mobile devices. _ Ensure security settings for social media accounts are turned on and set at the highest level of protection. _ Avoid payment of extortion demands as the funds will facilitate continued criminal activity. If you believe you have been a victim of this scam, you can file a complaint on the IC3.gov website, contact the local FBI office, or the Sheriff’s Office fraud line at 258-3292.

Carriage Village Hurricane and Tornado Information

The Club House will be opened by a designated person if the Hurricane or Tornado warning comes after the normal hours of operation which are 7 am to 10 pm.

Once you become aware of an impending hurricane or tornado, proceed to the club house and position yourself away from the windows for safety reasons. The lobby or the lounge / library is the safest place. You cannot bring your pets with you. You must either leave them at home or if you have time, take them to a nearby pet boarding place.

You may bring your vehicle to the club house and someone will be on hand to tell you where to park.

If you have mobility issues, please speak with a friend or neighbor who may provide assistance to you.

72 Hour Survival Kit

In the case of a hurricane warning, you may bring bulky items, clearly marked with your name, to the club house a day or two in advance.

If you plan to use the clubhouse as shelter in the case of a hurricane or tornado, you might use the following as a check list to prepare. If you plan to evacuate, it is important that you advise the office.

Your own drinking water Non-perishable food – canned fruit, vegetables, non-cream soups, etc. Convenience food – Ensure, protein or snack bars, snack foods, etc. (If the power is out there will be no refrigeration) Manual or battery operated can opener Battery operated radio, flashlight, etc. and extra batteries (you cannot recharge anything, including cell phones, if the power

is out) Cards, books, games Wet weather clothing and a fresh change of clothing First aid kit, personal hygiene products, personal grooming products, etc. Blankets, pillows, sleeping bags Personal medication and prescriptions Credit cards, check book, cash, important papers, etc.

Remember, there are no pets allowed. Special Needs

If you need oxygen, a constant care giver or nursing attention, have mobility requirements, or need assistance with medications, and so on, you can call the Lee County Division of Public Safety for special services and / or shelter. You will be advised of available services and be assigned to a specific shelter during a storm, hurricane, or tornado, and have transportation arranged in advance.

Are You Using the “IT” Factor to Secure Your Vessel?

It’s heating up outside and that means many Southwest Florida boaters will be spending time on the water enjoying a little piece of our tropical paradise. Although plenty of pleasure can come from being a boat owner, it can also cost you dearly if thieves are successful in stealing your watercraft or the valuable equipment onboard. “Since boat thefts tend to spike during the summer months, I encourage you to put the “it” factor in place to help safeguard your vessel,” said Sherriff Mike Scott. “It doesn’t matter whether you secure your boat at a marina, dock, or yard; the goal is to make it a hard target for thieves”.

Check It: Check all your security measures to make sure they work. Check your insurance policy to make sure you are covered should you become a theft victim.

Record and Mark It: Record all boat information such as serial numbers, ID codes, and HIN. Take pictures/video of your boat, trailer and equipment, and consider marking your property with a unique identifier such as a zip code or house number.

Alarm It: Install a professional alarm system designed specifically for the marine environment. Criminals

don’t like noise and visibility. Light It: Motion detectors with light are impractical on a boat but should be installed where the boat is

docked and stored. Secure It: Lock the boat whether on a trailer or in a marina and never leave the ignition key anywhere on

the boat. Lock the ignition system and remove your valuables if possible. Consider installing a GPS tracking device.

Report It: Notify law enforcement if a suspicious person is walking or lurking around the marina or your

boat. If you do experience a theft, report it immediately as over 90% of boats stolen are recovered in the same state on the same day.

Watch It: Start a Boat or Dock Watch program among your neighbors, marinas and other boat owners.

Consider video surveillance equipment that can watch and record while you are away.
