Who would be the audience for your m edia product? 'Brace ' is aim ed at a n iche aud ience o f yo ung punks aged 15 -25. Dem ographical ly the aud ience f o r th is m agaz ine w o uld be f ro m the so c ial c lass catego ry C1 – C2 (m ain ly m ale , b lack o r w hite , yo ung and w ith l o w o r ave rage inco m e . ) I do n 't be l ieve th is m agaz ine w ou ld be bo ught by the upper c lass as 'punk' is no t o f an upper c lass l i f e style . L ike al l m agaz ines 'Brace ' is pro -co nsum er ist , but because it is aim ing at a psychograph ic group that are ant i - co nf o rm ity and ant i -m ainst ream I have cho sen no t to adve rt ise the m agaz ine w ith br ight eye - catch ing co lo urs l ike m any m ainst ream m agaz ines do . T he w ay th is m agaz ine adve rt ises it se lf is by be ing c reat ive and insp ir ing. Due to m y audience ’ s c reat ive nature , an art ist ic im age o r styl ist ic layout w il l be m o re adve rt ising than a f ree gif t o f so m e so rt . By do ing th is the m agaz ine is m aking a statem ent ; that it is above m ainst ream advert ising, and doesn 't need to sc ream out w ith co lo ur in o rde r to se l l . T h is seem ingly arro gant style w il l app eal to the aud iences’ psychograph ics I am aim ing at . Sim ilar ly to m any real m agaz ines I have used a m ain im age o f a band m em ber loo king in to the cam era w ith a sub j ec t ive gaz e . T his w ay o f addressing the aud ience is essent ial as the styl ing o f the m agaz ine is unde rstated . W hen I asked peo ple i f they thought th is m agaz ine bro ke any o f the no rm al convent io ns o f a m agaz ine they said that it lo o ked m ore ’ styl ised ’ than m ost m agaz ines, and that the pho tography used thro ugho ut is m ore art ist ic than m ost . T h is un ique appearance w il l

appeal to the ‘ ar t ist ic ’ and ‘ ind ividual ist ’ values o f m y targe t aud ience . How does your m aga zine product represent particular social groups? I’ ve had responses to m y survey saying that the m agaz ine po rt rays punks in a co o l ‘ bad ass’ w ay, w h ich is exact ly w hat I’ m go ing f o r . T he w ay th is conno tat ion is show n to the aud ience is m ain ly thro ugh the pho to graphy. I’ ve used dram at ic pho tographs w ith at t itude , but by also using a grainy texture and dark, m uted co lo urs a grungy at t itude is po rt rayed w hich fi ts w ith the punk ste reo type . My survey resu lt s te l l m e that 92% o f peop le be l ieve the co lo ur schem e I have use d accurate ly represents punk. A lthough the m agaz ine represents punk art ist s w ith a b it o f a ‘ bad ass’ at t itude , they’ re no t sho w n as rebe ls causing t roub le , I’ ve chosen to sho w a m ore dram at ic and se r io us side to punk, m aking the m agaz ine seem m o re f o rm al and m ean ingf u l. T o do th is I’ ve used w e ll tho ught o ut and art ist ical ly se t up pho to graphs that use a ch iaroscuro l ight ing style . T h is m akes the pho to graphs loo k dram at ic w h ich co nno tes the m agaz ines f o rm al and se r io us content w h ich w il l be ap pealing to m y aud ience w ho w on’ t w ant to hear abo ut the latest ce lebr it y go ssip . What kind of m edia institution m ight distribute your m edia product and why? A s m y m agaz ine is targe ted at a n iche aud ience I don 't th ink it w ou ld se l l ve ry w e ll in b ig nam e d d ist r ibuto rs such as W H Sm ith , although if the m ainst ream s to re w as b ig eno ugh, such as a Lo ndon branch they m ay sto ck spec ial ist m agaz ines .

T h is le t s m e kno w that the m agaz ine is at a go od en o ugh standard to be d ist r ibuted and that sale s w ou ld inc rease . Mainst ream m agaz ines m ay use large pub lish ing ho uses such as IP C how eve r as m y m agaz ine do es no t appeal to a m ass m arke t it m ay be pub l ished independent ly by so m eone w ith expe r ience in the m agaz ine indust ry. T h is m ay change w hen sale s inc rease and the m agaz ine is m ore estab l ished, how eve r i f the m agaz ine is pub l ished w ith a b ig inst itu t io n is m ay lo ose it s pe rsonal fl are and beco m e m o re m ainst ream . T he slo gan f o r m y m agaz ine ( ‘ s t icking w ith punk’ ) d irec t ly addresses the aud ience I am t rying to at t rac t w ith a de c larat ive m o de and it le t s them kno w w hat the m agaz ine is abo ut . It also ident ifi es the m agaz ines U SP . I address the aud ience w ith a re laxed style o f w r it ing; it ’ s no t f o rm al, but it ’ s no t in f o rm al. T he language used is soph ist icated , but the content is f a ir ly easy go ing. T h is keeps w ith the grungy ye t so ph ist icated house style I have c reated visual ly. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product? to use spec ifi c too ls such as the dodge and burn too ls, and the qu ick m ask/ brushes. Looking back at your prelim inary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the f ull product? Be f o re m aking m y m agaz ine I had dabbled in to w o rk on P ho toshop but I w as no t ve ry confi dent in the w o rk I w as do ing. From w orking on th is pro j ec t I f ee l com petent w hen using P ho toshop and am able to com ple te tasks on the so f tw are w ithout the need to ask f o r he lp o r advice , although I st i l l f ee l I am progressing. I now know about the no rm al convent ions o f a m agaz ine and how and w hy the w o rk. I also f ee l l ike I’ ve learnt how to gathe r in f o rm at ion through surveys and put these resu lt s to use . I f ee l that I benefi ted f rom do ing a co l lege m agaz ine be f o re m y m usic m agaz ine . From m y co l lege m agaz ine I w as in t roduced to the convent ions o f m agaz ines but w as no t confi dent w ith them .
