Identity crisis is a growing issue in our country. Not only because foreign
culture is prominent, but also, the stigmas our country is facing, the vicious cycle of
corruption, the rampant poverty take away our pride as Filipinos. However there are
people who believe that our identity should be upheld, and that it is worth ghting
for. Last arch !", !#"$, an event %ilatisin si &uan invited some of known
personalities whose career or work aims in upholding the Filipino identity. 'hese
were (u))feed writer Isabel Laureta, *awad %alinga founder 'oni eloto, '+
hose-ournalist ichael Fa-atin, and singercomposer be /ancel.
I could describe the event in three ad-ectives. First, it was informative. 'he
speakers came from di0erent working elds1media, music industry, nationwide
organi)ation. It was indeed a good learning e2perience to hear from di0erent
perspectives. Isabel Laureta talked about how beautiful our country3s tourist spots
are, and how vibrant are the attitudes of our countrymen. 4he stressed that these
are something we can never deny as Filipinos. 4he emphasi)ed how social media
highlights all these treasures of the 5hilippines, especially those which are still
unknown to many. be /ancel talked about individuality, about nding ourselves
and our true passion. 67e are specically designed to be ourselves,8 he said.
(ottomline is, a proud Filipino appreciates his self as part of a country with its own
traditions, amidst emerging cultures, trends, etc. 9s someone born during the
artial Law period, ichael Fa-atin spoke about how nationalism anchors on history,
and as Filipinos, we should be knowledgeable on what had happened in the past tomake an improvement.
7hat struck the most to me was 'ony eloto3s part, which deserves my
second ad-ective, e0ective. It was very obvious that he really is a proud Filipino and
his stand was strong. He wanted to reverse migration by creating an environment
conducive for work, in order to ma2imi)e the many talents of the people. He said,
furthermore, that for us to achieve progress we must live an honest life, we must be
compassionate to the unprivileged by treating them as our family. (y lifting each
other from poverty, we are, at the same time, helping our country.
I have witnessed e0ective speakers during the event. 9lthough they
communicate in di0erent means, they are united by their goal of strengthening thetrue Filipino identity. 9s a -ournalist, you communicate through written or spoken
words, which must be well1crafted. 9s a composer you should possess the talent of
good song1writing, and as a musician you must be able to have the appeal to your
audience. 9s an orgin)ation leader, you are re:uired to communicate with other
parties that might help you with your cause. 'ony eloto even brought foreign
people to relay to the audience their role as foreigner in a Filipino organi)ation. 'he
third ad-ective, therefore, would be motivating. 9s a speech communication

student, I learned that communication must be goal1oriented. 7e communicate to
achieve a goal.
