INSTRUCTOR: DR. J. CAI COURSE DESCRIPTION The students learn structural formulas of organic compounds during the introductory level organic courses (CHM 2210 and CHM 2211), often with very little supporting evidence. These chemical structures are in fact based upon sound experimental evidence, which comes from spectroscopic experiments. This course enables the students to use the spectroscopic techniques covered in the course to understand and determine the chemical structure of the molecules. The techniques described in the course are Mass Spectrometry, Ultraviolet-Visible Spectroscopy, Infrared Spectroscopy, and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy.
