Global Hawk Maritime Demonstration isa high-altitude, unmanned, multi-intelligence, persistent maritime

Intelligence Surveillance Reconnaissance (ISR)system designed to provide the fleet with anexperimentation and demonstration capability tosupport the Navy’s transformational initiativesof SeaPower 21and FORCEnet, through the sea trial process.

The 44-foot long Global Hawkhas a wingspan of more than116 feet, a height of 15 feetand a gross takeoff weight of26,750 pounds. The distinctiveV-tail empennage, the enginenacelle, and the aft fuselageare constructed of graphitecomposite materials, as is itswing. The center fuselage isconstructed of conventionalaluminum, while various fairingsand radomes use fiberglasscomposite construction. Theaircraft has a projected 12,000nautical mile range and 35-hour endurance, with satellite and line-of-sight communicationlinks to the ground system.

High resolution sensors that can look throughadverse weather day or night from an altitudeof 65,000 feet, can conduct limited maritimesurveillance over an area the size of the stateof Illinois in just 24 hours.

Near real-time maritime reconnaissanceimagery is obtained through the use of theIntegrated Sensor Suite, which consists of anall-weather synthetic aperture radar/maritimemoving target indicator (SAR/MMTI), a highresolution electro-optical (EO) digital cameraand a third-generation infrared (IR) sensor, all

operating through a common signalprocessor that is the equivalent ofan airborne super computer. Theintegrated design of the sensorpackage gives payload operators onthe ground the ability to selectradar, infrared and visiblewavelength modes as desired, andeven use the SAR/MMTIsimultaneously with either of thetwo sensors. The high resolutionimage quality makes it possible todistinguish various types of vessels.

The Mission Control Element (MCE)of the Global Hawk ground segmentprovides management of theaircraft and its sensors. Personnel

in the MCE shelter operate the command andcontrol, mission planning, imagery qualitycontrol, and communications functions of thesystem. Personnel in the Launch and RecoveryElement (LRE) of the ground segment loadthe autonomous flight mission plan into

the air vehicle from the shelter and monitor theoperation of the aircraft during its automatictakeoff and landing, which is assisted byDifferential Global Positioning System (DGPS).

The Global Hawk’s communication system isused for line-of-sight, command and controlconnectivity, satellite connectivity and datadissemination and will enable ground-basedoperators to monitor and operatethe air vehicle and its sensorsuite at all times. Multiplesatellite and line-of-sight datalinks provide numerouscommunication paths to theGlobal Hawk MaritimeDemonstration MCE and the LRE.Broadband communications viacommercial satellites serve as theprimary data link for transmitting imagery.Command and control, as well as voicecommunications are achieved via UHF/VHF.

In addition, broadband line-of-sightcommunication is available through theCommon Data Link (CDL).

The Rolls-Royce AE3007H turbofan coreengine specifically developed for the GlobalHawk program is a growth version of the

AE3007 engine, currently in use in theCitation X and the Embraer Regional Jet. Inthe 8,000-pound thrust class, the engine isa high bypass, two-spool, axial flow engine, flat rated at 7,580 pounds of thrust, uninstalled, sea level static to 113 degreesFahrenheit ambient temperature.

Global Hawk Maritime Demonstration willprovide the U.S. Navy with a system to

aid in the development of persistentmaritime ISR CONOPS, Training,Tactics-Techniques-Procedures (TTP),through experimentation and exercisevenues to include Training Cycle Work-ups, Limited Objective Experiments(LOE) and Joint Force Exercises.

Today, the Global Hawk MaritimeDemonstration program is managed for theDepartment of Defense by the U.S. Navy’sProgram Executive Office, Strike Weaponsand Unmanned Aviation, Naval UnmannedAerial Systems Division (PMA-263) and theaircraft will be operated by Air Test andEvaluation Squadron TWO ZERO (VX-20) atNaval Air Station, Patuxent River, Md.
