Specializing in wool processing for Icelandic sheep & alpaca

Morning Star Fiber Processing

At Morning Star Fiber, we are set apart from other fibermills by specializing in the unique processing needs ofIcelandic sheep and huacaya alpaca producers. We featuredehairing to separate out the tog from Icelandic sheepand the guard hair from huacaya, making the outcomeof rovings, yarns or felts exquisitely soft. Fiber separatedby the dehairer is most often processed into felt rugsfor a minor additional fee. Our mill has the capability ofspinning yarn to your specification. Yarn twists aresteam set and put up on cones, in center pull balls, or in1.5 or 2 yd. skeins at the customer’s weight specification.

We offer color blending and fiber blending at the picker, carder, drawframe, spinner and plyer. Morning Star Fiberalso offers custom dying and spinning of novelty yarns.

Icelandic customers often have the tog (long wool fromthe dual coat) spun into 3 ply rug warp. We also offerlopi yarn from natural Icelandic, and a “lopi-style” yarnfor huacaya — which is a worsted weight single, similarto pencil roving with only 1.5 twists per inch.

Another service offered at MSF is felting from fibersthat have been taken out at the dehairer or secondsfrom huacaya. We love to design rugs with roving bitsleft over from your spinning, or make “reversible” feltsfrom 2 different colors of animals. Our felts can bemade in weights from 1 to 2 pounds of batting. Thethinner felts can be sewn on regular sewing machines. The thicker felts make great rugs by the bed or in frontof the sofa. Felt sheet size is 3’ x 4’.
