AcoustiFloat HI-SEPFloating Subfloor Panels for Sound & Vibration Control

Excessive vibration from equipment or noisy spacescan be extremely disruptive to building occupants. Floating floors are employed to reduce or eliminate un-wanted sound between noise generating areas andoccupied, quiet areas.

A prime example is noise and vibration emanating from a mechanical room in an office building or a condominium. Other examples include rooms for entertainment, exercise, manufacturing.

The AcoustiFloat® HI-SEP Floating Floor System is comprised of a pre-engineered, prefabricated subfloorpanel combined with a concrete or other type wearing surface installed over a concrete structural slab. The system can provide high sound dampening and vibrationisolation. Provides system natural frequencies down to6 Hz.

The AcoustiFloat® HI-SEP Floating Subfloor PanelSystem consists of 5 elements:

1. Specially designed natural rubber isolators (30 Durometer for fields, and additional 50 Durometer

for concentrated loads).2. An interlocking T&G OSB panel (pouring form).

3. Acoustic fiberglass infill insulation.

4. A perimeter isolation board.

5. A concete or other type wearing surface (by others).

DESCRIPTION

Generally, aggravating structure-borne noise can travel easily throughout a building. A floating floor can mitigate this type of vibration and sound quite effectively, at a remote or receiving location.Floating floors, applicable for both new construction or renovation projects, are typically specified for mechanical rooms or sound-sensitive quiet areas regardless of their location in buildings. Example applications include the following:

• Mechanical rooms or isolating heavy vibration producing machinery, i.e. generators, chillers, pumps, fans).• Commercial, industrial, or multi-residential housing.• Entertainment venues e.g. live/movie theatres, concert halls, studios, ballrooms, night clubs, dance floors, etc.• Fitness centres, aerobic studios, karate dojos, weight rooms, etc.

• Sound and recording studios.• Home theater / media rooms.• Medical facilities (isolating precision instrumentation and equipment) e.g. MRI.

USE

Pre-assembled in factory, AcoustiFloat® HI-SEP subfloor panels are designed to accommodate the uniform load of a poured concrete floating floor as well as the concentrated loads of furnishings and/or mechanical equipment.

Optional AccessoriesPerimeter Vent: Available for venting of space between structural slab and floating slab if desired.Standard white colour.

When using the AFHS-2-50 isolators, use the Force (lbf) figure directly above the plotted figure for the AFHS-2-30 isolators. This will match the deflection of all of the isolators thus keeping the system in balance.

SPECIAL FEATURES

Modular design eliminates bridging; the nominal 610 mm x 610 mm (2’-0” x 2’-0”) size panels follow changes in structural slab more readily and reduces subsequent construction problems typically associated with larger 1220 mm x 2440 mm (4’-0” x 8’-0”) sheets of T&G panels.

Actual finished panel size is 590 mm x 590 mm (23-1/4” x 23-1/4” - 3.75 sq.ft.)

Durable rubber isolators; cylindrical design with interior void produces even deflection and low natural frequency performance down to 6.0 Hz as substantiated by accred-ited testing facility. Rated for minimum 50-year life without performance degradation.

Offers significant installation cost savings; easy-to-install modular, prefabricated design speeds installation.

Single source responsibility; AcoustiFloat® system is installed only by manufacturer or trained/authorized personnel.

LEED investment; The materials used in the AcoustiFloat® HI-SEP floating floor system are 100% recyclable. Along with prefabrication (less waste) and an on-site recycling plan, the system lends itself to sustain-able construction and reduced carbon footprint.

TECHNICAL DATA

The basic panel assembly using the 30 Durometer isolators provides a predictable system natural frequency for common floor thicknesses as follows:- 100 mm (4”) concrete thickness: 9 Hz- 150 mm (6”) concrete thickness: 7.5 Hz- 200 mm (8”) concrete thickness: 6.5 Hz

Force / Deflection Chart(Concrete Floating Floor Assemblies)*The Force / Deflection Chart provides acoustical data for the standard panel configured with 4 - 30 Durometer isolators (AFHS-2-30). The resulting natural frequencies in Hertz (cycles/second) for floating concrete slabs ranging in thickness from 50 mm (2”) to 305 mm (12”) are shown at right.

Force Deflection Characteristics (Rubber Isolators)*Using an Instron 1350 Tension/Compression machine, the isolators were tested to determine force/deflection. The force/deflection data was plotted and recorded using both metric and imperial measurements.

To accommodate the concentrated load of mechanical equipment, calculations are made to determine the number of additional AFHS-2-(30 or 50) isolators that are required. These extra isolators are fitted under the panels (or portion of panels) where the concentrated loads are located. The weight of the equipment is divided by the plotted ‘Force (lbf)’ indicated on the Force / Deflection Chart at the given concrete floating floor thickness.

STEP 3. Proceed across floor installing panels and securing panels together with a heavy duty stapler. Pay attention to panel numbering if point load isolators have been factory installed on some of the panels.

STEP 5. Install Perimeter Gap Seal – Type AF-PGS, to compen-sate for irregular wall surfaces and small gaps up to 50 mm (2”). Press Perimeter Gap Seal against Perimeter Isolation Board and fasten with 25 mm (1”) wood screws at each pre-drilled location. Seal seams and joints with construction sheathing tape.

STEP 1. Lay out all panels and materials on site. Inspect to ensure there has been no damage during shipping. Make note of any panels that have been marked or cut by factory. Prior to installing the AcoustiFloat HI-SEP® System, ensure structural floor is sound.

STEP 2. Install Perimeter Isolation Board – Type AF-PIB, around room by applying a single bead of adhesive down the centre and press in place against walls and any penetrations, beams or pipes, etc. Begin to install panels in far corner of room or as indicated on any factory assembly drawings. First panel goes ‘Tongue’ into corner.

STEP 4. Where extra isolators are needed at cut panel edges or if point load isolators have not been factory installed, cut away fiberglass and fasten isolator with stapler.

STEP 6. Do final inspection to ensure floating floor panels, perimeter and penetration seals are correctly installed. Apply 6 mil poly sheeting and tape seams. The floating floor is now ready for reinforcing steel and concrete placement.

The AcoustiFloat® HI-SEP Isolated Floating Floor System is to be installed by Wilrep Ltd.or trained/authorized installers in strict accordance with manufacturer’s printed instructions. A typical installation sequence is illustrated below.

The Acoustifloat® HI-SEP Floating Floor System is designed to accommodate the uniform load of the concrete and the concentrated loads of furnishings and/or mechanical equipment supported by the floating floor. These elements will be indicated on the construction documents supplied by the project developer, architect or general contractor.

The location of the concentrated or heavy individual loads is matched up with the subfloor panel layout prepared for the designated space or room. As required, additional AFHS-2-(30 or 50) ‘pick-up’ isolators are positioned under the panels (or portions of panels) where the concentrated loads are located. For most systems, the ‘pick-up’ isolators are factory installed. These isolators can also be easily site fitted for load positions that have been changed or omitted from the construction documents. Extra isolators are site fitted for cut-to-size or full panels at ends of runs, and panels cut to fit around columns, pipes or other protrusions.
