ALLIED RELEASES EARLY CONNORSToronto: Allied Records havecompleted negotiations wherebythey'll be distributing andmanfacturing two early albumreleases of Stompin' TomConnors.The 32 year old Spud Islanderhas penned more than 400 songs,and most of them about Canada.He's become famous for his doggeddetermination to remain a Canadiancountry artist. His only wishis to be nationally known in hisown country, an almost impossiblefeat but one that is showingindication of happening.

Stompin' Tom is now regarded asone of the top rated Canadiancountry performers. His successon disc has been mostly of his owndoing, and he has more thancracked his nut on his ownproductions which he leased out torecord companies.The only gimmick Connors uses isa 2 foot by 2 foot sheet of plywoodwhich he replaces every two weeks

and which became necessarybecause of his stompin' destructionto carpeted stage areas.An indication of just how popularthis Prince Edward Islander hasbecome was his cracking of theforeign barrier at Toronto'sHorseshoe Tavern. The tavern isknown for its policy of bringing inthe top name country acts of theU.S. and the patrons had becomepre -conditioned to this foreignsound, almost rejecting any of thelocal variety. Connors was bookedin for a short period but ended upseven weeks, breaking all previousrecords at the club. In view ofthis record breaking stay andbecause of the tremendousfollowing Connors had acquiredduring his stay, Canada'sAmbassador Tom Dalton presentedConnors with a beautiful award inrecognition of this accomplishment.The two Connors albums to bedistributed by Allied are: "TheNorthland's Own Tom Connors"and "On Tragedy Trail".

A&M Signs Judith DurhamGerry Lacoursiere, director ofA&M (Canada) reports the signingof Judith Durham to the label. MissDurham is best known in Canadafor the smash hit "Georgy Girl"with the Seekers. She comes tothe label with a solid backgroundin music. At the age of seven shebegan taking piano lessons andcontinued for eleven years underprivate tutors and at the MelbourneUniversity Conservatorium. Later,

in school, she was active inperformances for school assembliesetc. and was considering voicetraining and a career in opera.Then she became interested in jazzand blues forms and began aseries of appearances with localjazz groups. Her first majorappearance was with FrankTraynor's Jazz Preachers, apopular Australian group of the

time. While singing with thePreachers Judith was moonlightingat an ad agency where she met ayoung man named Athol Guy whobelonged to a folk group in theMelbourne area. Guy asked her tosing with the group one nightand she accepted. The group'sname was the Seekers. After aseries of lucky breaks withrecording companies the Seekerswere off entertaining on an oceancruise which took them to thehappening England of 1964.In England by playing hotels andconcerts the group became anovernight phenomenon. RCMP Band In CBC's "Holiday Festival"

Toronto: The Ottawa -based, 41 piece RCMP Band will star in

CBC's "Holiday Festival" to be aired 9 p.m. Christmas Day. The

colour special, produced by CBC Halifax, will feature the 60 piece

Mount Saint Bernard Girls Choir and Halifax harpist Phyllis Ensher.

Host of the show is announcer Don Tremaine. The special will air more than

fifteen selections by the band and choir, including "0, Holy Night",

"Christmas Bells", "Scarlet Ribbons" and "Born Free". The

RCMP band will be under the direction of Sub -Inspector Bramwell

Smith, RCMP supervisor of music, and will consist of professional,

university and conservatory musicians from across Canada.

Another Christmas Day special to be aired by the network will be

"Cue the Angels" - a child's view of Christmas. The production, done at CBC Toronto by Leo

Rampen, was directed by actress Araby Lockhart. Stars of the show

are the Grade 6 class of Whitney Public. School in Toronto. The

children discuss and perform the story of the first Christmas. The

result is guaranteed to be a funny

SANTA'S HELPER

- CKFH Toronto: Radio Station CKFH is

going full ahead with its "Christmas Miracle". From

November 30th to December 23rd the station will be broadcasting the voices of needy children,

anonymously, telling Santa what he or she wants for Christmas. The

station expects its more affluent listeners and just those with big

hearts to respond and provide what the child requests. CKFH's hope is that by Dec 23rd all the children

whose requests have been aired will have what they really want.

Toronto Symphony Marks First Rehearsal

At Massey Hall Toronto: The Toronto Symphony,

under the direction of Karel Ancerl, will present the second in a series

of student concerts on Dec. 13. On this occasion, Ancerl takes over from Victor Feldbrill as conductor. For the firM time the Symphony will be rehearsing at Massey Hall.

Works presented will be Symphonie No. 2 by Clermont Pepin and

Symphony No. 5 by Mendelssohn. Piano concerto soloist will be Czech Antonin Kubalek. Tickets

Often a promoter will book an attraction without any intention of

making a profit. His dance or event is successful enough so that he can

bring in a big expensive attraction and not crack his nut.

He does this to bring attention to his weekly event with the big

attraction. He hopes to lure new customers to his event and hopes

that they will come again when he can scale his attendance to make a

profit. It is good business to promote your dance in many ways and this is one of them.

It's like running a special. You can do it once in a while, but you are doing it to make money

eventually. Profit isn't always a good motive to the successful

promoter. Filling the premises as often as possible is a way of as-

suring a strong attendance when lesser known acts play your dance.

Often a less costly or less known act will develop a following.

They are sometimes better show- men and often on their first leg of

success. You can book them eco- nomically and give your audience

a good show for their money. Name value is just as impor-

tant as the groups you might take a chance on. A good booking agency

will attempt to only recommend attractions that have merit.

MacRae Tapes For CTLWith humble beginnings at "TheQuestion Mark" in Vancouver,Canada's first folk -singing coffeehouse, Alan MacRae has movedthrough work in the mid -west and isnow to be found in Toronto. Workalong the way includes a musicalscore for a CBC documentary inVancouver and an appearance atthe Calgary Stampede. Uponarrival in Toronto, MacRae playedthe first Mariposa Festival andhas been back with the festivalfour times by popular demand,twice of ceremonies.Travelling through Canada andEurope with the Chanteclairs,Alan become interested incomposing and it is here he seemsto have found himself. He hasrecently signed with Canint Musicin Canada and Warners in the US.This past week MacRae has beenrecording at the Victor studios forCTL. Several tracks from thesession will be used in a countryalbum from CTL to be issued earlynext year.

CBC Entertains In CyprusThe CBC television network incooperation with the Dept. start to produce Canadian records, but instead, individuals involved in

radio or the System itself might find it helpful to produce records that the System could judge for

airplay. It is to be noted that radio people have been known to engage

in this type of thing with no fear of a conflict of interest. Past

experience might lead us to believe that the programming of certain

records might be influenced by the proximity of the radio people

to the production itself or the production entity. It might even

lead to a situation that would create a decline in competition

if not curtail record production by outsiders.

The praise heaped upon the CTL might be an attempt to establish

the fact that broadcasters have set a precedent by entering the area of

record production. In a section of the article called

"How The Maple Leaf System Works" the following quote is worthy of consideration. "Three

selections are chosen to be played by all participating

stations. They are given a minimum of two weeks' exposure

to determine their hit potential. Should listener reaction be

favourable, the record will be charted.

The three singles picked by the member stations each week also appear on their surveys which

Unusual Catching On At Fillmore Although rock groups are standard

fare at the Fillmore East rock palace in New York City, theater owner and rock emporer Bill

Graham has a talent for bringing the unusual to the Fillmore, often as the opening act on a normal

hard rock show. Recently he let Joseph Egar loose

at the Fillmore with some surpris- ing results. Formerly Associate

Richard Robinson reports from New York

Conductor under Leopold Stowkowski's leadership of the

American Symphony Orchestra, Egar is not attempting to turn on

youth with his rock and symphony orchestra compositions.

At the Fillmore he presented his latest work, Crossover. Edgar

describes the combination of classical and modern music

through a phrase from a poem he's written: Crossover is "a bridge,

a hand extended, a vision of love appended, is Beatles, Beethoven, Woodstock and Bach."

Egar also admits the influence of Bob Dylan in his work. Prior to his Fillmore appearance the

composer has presented orchestrations with a mixed media

environment made up of two separate musical groups: classical

and rock. At the Fillmore he combined this into a composite

group or rock and symphonic instrumentation with a string

quartet, electric and stand up bass, woodwinds, three horns, electric

guitar, electric piano, and percussion plus a singer.

Another recent Fillmore occurrence was the East Harlem's Children's Chorus. Consisting of

children from the city's ghetto areas, the chorus has also recorded

an album of Christmas songs with the help of Cissy Drinkard Houston of The Sweet Inspirations and

arranger -producer Richard Wolfe who has worked with artists like

Brian Hyland, Mike Douglas and Georgia Gibbs.

Although Fillmore owner Bill Graham has received a great deal

of criticism from the rock community and the pop press, I

think that his efforts in bringing this variety of musical experiences

to new audiences are both exciting and of great value, especially for

rock fans like myself who are tired of hearing the same old

wah-wah from groups. In other news around New York this

week, the Brooklyn Bridge played a free concert recently for wounded

Vietnam war veterans at a birthday party held for Count Basie. The

Bridge, sort of a white version of the Fifth Dimension with several

gold records to their credit, are now talking about going on a national

tour with the Count as well as the possibility of recording on an album

with him. Remember the Doors? It really has

been a long time since anything has been heard from that superist (?) of super groups. Their record

company announced in New York this week that the group will be

making their first appearance in the East in over a year in January in New York where they will give four concerts, two a night for two

nights. In fact, the group hasn't worked at all for several months

and it is possible that this upcoming concert may be their

first scheduled for some time. I find it hard to believe that they

think they can fill Madison Square Garden four times in two days ....

a feat even the Rolling Stones didn't attempt when they were here

recently. Currently on their third tour of the

U.S., Jethro Tull were forced to cancel an already sold -out per-

formance in Chicago at the Kinetic Playground, when the

promoter greeted them on their arrival with news that the club

had burned down to the ground. The fire, which occurred late on

a Sunday night, destroyed $40,000 worth of equipment

belonging to the Iron Butterfly and King Crimson.

I spoke to Ian Anderson this week and I'm afraid to admit that I found him a rather pleasant, intelligent, and likeable fellow. After the kind

of "wild man of rock" press he's been getting in the British papers,

I expected a seven foot giant with a mile wide hair to come dancing in,

rather than the sedate gentleman who appeared ....Other British

artists in New York included Fleetwood Mac who gave a press performance ....spotlighting some

of their new sound much more rock and roll music than

anything else.

A CLOSER LOOK AT THE MLSThe November -December issue ofThe Music Scene published byBMI Canada as an organ to itsmembers contains an interestingarticle about the Maple LeafSystem that raises a number ofquestions. The foremost questionthat occurred to me is whether themembers of the MLS were evenin agreement with their own aimsand objectives.An Editor's Note in The MusicScene gives credit to CHUM forsuppling the article which wasreprinted (according to The MusicScene) intact.The article begins: "The MapleLeaf System originated at CHUMRadio. Toronto, and is stronglysupported and endorsed by 11other radio stations in majorCanadian cities, in providingunprecedented exposure forCanadian musical talent." Thearticle goes from there to explainthe aims of the MLS which isreferred to in the article as "oneof the most progressive stepstoward the development of aCanadian recording industry". Italso notes that the System'ssuccess "will eliminate some ofthe severe criticism levelledagainst private broadcasters overthe years of what was deemed to betheir lack of interest in fosteringCanadian talent."We can thank this article for findinga quote from a brief of 1964 to theCommittee on Broadcasting whichwas from the Association ofCanadian Radio and TelevisionArtists. The quote reads asfollows: "In private radio noattention is paid at all to theencouragement of Canadian talent.Private radio is a business, but itis a business unlike show business.It is an electronic jungle, abattlefield of cut-throat competi-tion, gimmicks and ratings.However, even an electronic

jungle is presumed to beinhabited by animals native to thesurroundings. In Canada's jungle,not only are the number of liveanimals being reduced, but thenative fauna that manages tosurvive is being attacked by animported parasitic pest."It is important to note that even in1964, the situation was not muchbetter than it is today. Thearticle then praises the efforts ofthe CBC, and notes that privatebroadcasting has lent a hand andbrings attention to the efforts ofthe CTL (Canadian TalentLibrary). The article states,"Unlike Canadian talent Library,the Maple Leaf System is notpresently engaged in talent searchand record production. The systemmight best be described as aguaranteed vehicle for thesuccessful country -wide promotionand exposure of Canadian -producedpopular music."

There is an indication here thatCHUM and the other members ofthe MLS might be interested insomeday going into recordproduction. The words "presentlyengaged" seem to imply that thematter is still open for considera-tion.

Early predictions (as the Systemwas starting) led to the speculation

that it would not be the memberstations themselves that wouldstart to produce Canadian records,but instead, individuals involved inradio or the System itself mightfind it helpful to produce recordsthat the System could judge forairplay. It is to be noted that radiopeople have been known to engagein this type of thing with no fearof a conflict of interest. Pastexperience might lead us to believethat the programming of certainrecords might be influenced by theproximity of the radio peopleto the production itself or theproduction entity. It might evenlead to a situation that wouldcreate a decline in competitionif not curtail record production byoutsiders.The praise heaped upon the CTLmight be an attempt to establishthe fact that broadcasters have seta precedent by entering the area ofrecord production.In a section of the article called"How The Maple Leaf SystemWorks" the following quote isworthy of consideration. "Threeselections are chosen to beplayed by all participatingstations. They are given aminimum of two weeks' exposureto determine their hit potential.Should listener reaction befavourable, the record will becharted.The three singles picked by themember stations each week alsoappear on their surveys which

Conductor under LeopoldStowkowski's leadership of theAmerican Symphony Orchestra,Egar is not attempting to turn onyouth with his rock andsymphony orchestra compositions.At the Fillmore he presented hislatest work, Crossover. Edgardescribes the combination ofclassical and modern musicthrough a phrase from a poem he'swritten: Crossover is "a bridge,a hand extended, a vision of loveappended, is Beatles, Beethoven,Woodstock and Bach."Egar also admits the influence ofBob Dylan in his work. CTV SPECIALS

Toronto: The CTV television network has announced the

presentation of two specials to mark the Christmas season. The Andy Williams Show will

feature members of Williams' family in an hour long song fest.

The December 19th airing will have Williams' wife, the charming

Claudine Longet, and brothers, Dick, Don and Bob. Numbers will

include "0, Holy Night", "Silent Night" and "White Christmas".

Another family get-together will be the Dean Martin Show of

December 25th. The Families of Martin and Frank Sinatra will

join in for a salute to the Season. Martin's wife, Jeanne, and seven children will appear with the Sinatra clan. Martin and Sinatra

open with "A Marshmallow World" followed by Gail Martin and Nancy

Sinatra with "It's a Most Unusual Day". Nancy sings her hit single,

"These Boots Are Made For Walkin' "

Turkish Auditorium and an outdoor performance at Tjiklos. Producer

for radio is Jack Budgell, for television, Dave Thomas. Executive producer is Ken Dalziel.

QUALITY PUSHES DOMESTIC PRODUCT

Toronto: Quality Records have pulled all stops in getting as much

interesting and quality Canadian product on the market as possible.

One of the most interesting is a Canadian Talent Library release

of "Looking Through Crystal

are made available to the public. It was agreed that there would be

no special `Canadian' designation given these listings as it

was the desire of the Maple Leaf System that these selections stand

on their own merit." In one case, at least one station

hasn't lived up to this particular promise. The tag "Canadian"

was often played up and also the reference to appearing "on their

survey" would lead one to believe that the singles picked

would appear automatically on the station's chart "made available

to the public". Did the three records picked each wee', "also appear on their surveys which

are made available to the public"? CHUM's story in The Music Scene

takes on even more interest when compared to the replies that MLS members made to the series of articles that appeared in RPM Weekly.

CFCF'S BABS PITT TO BPA

Montreal: Mrs. Babs Pitts, Director of Advertising and

Promotion for Montreal's CFCF- TV, has been appointed as a

director of the Broadcasters' Promotion Association. Mrs. Pitts

was elected to the board at the association's fourteenth annual

Seminar, held in Philadelphia in November. At the Seminar, CTV

was awarded a Gold Medal for its sales promotion brochure in

connection with The Fabulous Sixties series.

Other news from CTV announced that 32 episodes of the Untamed

World series had been sold to an Austalian concern. Another 20 episodes are now in production.

The network's Halifax outlet, CJCH, held a "Non -Ball", with

Elizabeth Montgomery and Mike Connors as non -guests. Object of

the exercise was fund raising for the local YMCA. Tickets were

bought, guests of honour named and publicity was given but no ball took place. Miss Montgomery and Connors reported that they

were delighted not to be attending.

New Product From CBC Transcription Service

Toronto: "Ukranian Christmas" is the second album put out by the

CBC with the Ivan Romanoff Chorus and Orchestra. The LP

features Ukranian Christmas music and cuts include "Bells of

Jerusalem", "What Miracle is This" etc. For the LP, the

Romanoff choir was expanded to 20 voices and soloist Lesia

Zubrack is featured. The record is available through Capitol.

Up -coming releases include "Peaceful" by Pat Hervey, "Juliette's Country World" and

the sound track from the CBC comedy series "Funny You Should Say That".

A BEEF FROM BIEFER Cornwall: Don Biefer reports good

listener reaction to the Marshmallow Soup Group's new RCA single

"I Love Candy". His CJSS listeners have become pro - Canadian since Biefer has been

leaning on the latest in Canadian releases. But Biefer has a beef

and writes: "We get hopeless distribution of records from

almost all record companies thus screwing -up the chances for

certain Canadian records to make it. In our area we are the only

station on the air within a radius of 80 miles, after the

pattern change (now it changes at 4:30 PM) with a signal that

reaches Montreal & Ottawa & farther giving us the chance to

make a hit out of a good record. It's too bad that so many small

stations are put into this situation of bad service. Is there no way to rectify this? I'm asking this

after already writing to these companies?"
