A wORd fROm SPECIAL TRAVELDear Travelers

After a glorious Danube cruise in 2015, we have settled upon France and Spain as the next Classical Music Cruise destination.

Our route, from the Pays d'Or in the heart of France to the sublime beauty of the South and Barcelona, is through a region renowned for its fine wine, cuisine and arts of all disciplines. This enchanting territory has inspired some of the world’s greatest composers and artists.

We have picked a great ship, the AMADagio, and the superb cruise line AMAWaterways for our journey, and included everything that one could wish for on a special trip. We believe in value for your money and not hiding numerous extra charges in the "not included" section.

Working closely with the legendary Canadian musician, impresario and raconteur George Zukerman, O.C., O.B.C. we have put together a program that will be “music to your ears”.

Mr. Zukerman is a celebrated broadcaster and raconteur, recently retired as the long-standing Artistic Director of White Rock Concerts. He retired from performing in 2012, but during his 62-year career playing on international stages George Zukerman was acclaimed world-wide as the “High Priest” of the bassoon. Fashioning a remarkable international solo career on this unlikely instrument, his recordings of major bassoon repertoire can be found on the prestigious Vox-Turnabout label www.radiius.com/bassoonasyouareready.

This trip will spoil your senses unlike any other, bringing together the finest in music, food, wine and art in a setting of surpassing beauty. Our path will cross those well-worn by greats such as Van Gogh, Cézanne, DalÍ, Picasso and Gaudi as we travel through the areas that lured them again and again to create their masterpieces. Enjoy spectacular historic cities, exemplary food and services, fascinating background on the sites and music we'll be experiencing, and exquisite musical performances both during our river Cruise and on shore in beautiful concert halls.

We also have the wonderful Kai Gleusteen and Catherine Ordronneau returning to accompany us on the cruise as hosts, and lending their talents to private performances for us as we cruise down the Rhone. We will have extraordinary opportunities to experience timeless music in the magnificent style of venue for which it was written. Imagine experiencing this incredible music in great European concert halls and museums, steeped in history and sumptuous artwork. What a journey!

Everyone should make at least one Once-in-a-Lifetime trip, and this is an opportunity we don’t want you to miss. The combination of great cultures, wonderful sites and the finest music will be an experience you will never forget.

We look forward to having you join us! Gery Valtiner, Program Director

A NOTE fROm ThE ImPRESARIOGreetings Music lovers

There is something special about the combination of great music, great painting and fabulous cuisine!

When it all happens in the South of France and in the Catelonian regions of Spain, the delights to our senses are even more wondrous!

Consider the lush impressionism of Ravel, Debussy, César Franck, Chausson, Fauré... and add the painting of Cézanne, Van Gogh, Monet, and Pissaro. Round out the evenings with meals prepared by some of the great chefs of Europe in such celebrated centres of gastronomy as Lyon and Barcelona.

As your AMA Waterways ship AMADagio cruises down the Rhone towards Arles your travel pleasure will be assured by Hosts Kai Gleusteen and Catherine Ordronneau, and STI travel expert Gery Valtiner.

While it is still too early to know the exact concert schedule, some things are already certain. There will be: § a Symphony concert by l’Orchestre de Lyon § a performance of Verdi’s Macbeth by the Barcelona Opera § a chamber music concert in the Musée des Beaux Artes in Avignon § a special wind ensemble concert in the Van Gogh Museum in Arles § three performances on board the AMADagio § ...and more to come

Kai and Catherine will be your gracious hosts, as well as performing in many of the concerts that you will enjoy. I will be there in spirit, if not in person!

We all look forward to welcoming you on board in October 2016.

muSIC ImPRESARIO: GEORGE ZukERmANDistinguished Canadian Impresario George Zukerman is proud to present another STI-AMA-Waterways classical music river cruise, this time on the River Rhone in October 2016 Solo bassoonist, George Zukerman retired from the international concert stage in 2012, but during his lengthy career, he was celebrated as one of the few artists to achieve recognition on his instrument outside the ranks of the Symphony Orchestra. Proclaimed by his colleagues as the “High Priest” of the bassoon, critics around the world referred to him as the "Pablo Casals" [Singapore], the "Jasha Heifitz" [Perth], the "André Segovia" [Glasgow], the “Great Magician” [Munich], and even the “Eddie Van Halen" of the bassoon [Prince George, B C].He concertized extensively in Canada and the USA, and In the course of more than 50 international tours, he was the first soloist on his instrument ever invited to tour in the former Soviet Union, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and China.

He recorded the major concerto repertoire for the bassoon for the Vox-Turnabout label with the renowned Wurternburg Chamber Orchestra. In the libraries, castles, museums and manor houses of Europe, he unearthed dozens of previously unknown works for the bassoon, including one piece thought to be a missing Mozart bassoon concerto. At home in Canada, he

commissioned and performed works by most of Canada’s leading 20th century composers. He was awarded the Order of Canada and the Order of British Columbia for his lifetime contributions to music and touring throughout the nation.Mr. Zukerman is one of Canada’s best known musical raconteurs, His concerts, and more recently his numerous interviews and broadcasts on the CBC, are interlaced with fascinating background, casual commentary and anecdotes of touring life. For many years, parallel to his performing career, Mr. Zukerman was also recognized as one of Canada’s leading Impresarios. Dubbed “the Hurok of the Hamlets” he specialized in bringing fine concerts to remote and isolated venues including villages and hamlets throughout the Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Nunavik. Mr. Zukerman has recently retired after 62 years as Artistic Director of the immensely successful White Rock Concerts.Born in Great Britain, Mr. Zukerman has lived in Canada since 1953. Prior to settling in Canada, where he now lives in the Vancouver suburb of Surrey with his partner violinist Erika Bennedik, he was a member of the world-renowned Israel Philharmonic Orchestra in Tel Aviv. From 1953 to 1965 he was a member of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and the distinguished CBC Chamber Orchestra.
