ONCE A MONTHAdult women of all ages are encouraged to perform
breast self-exams at least once a month. Johns Hopkins Medical Center states, “Forty percent of
diagnosed breast cancers are detected by women who feel a lump, so establishing a regular breast self-exam is
very important.”While mammograms can help you to detect cancer before
you can feel a lump, breast self-exams help you to be familiar with how your breasts look and feel so you can alert your health care professional if there are any changes.
HOW SHOULD A BREAST SELF-EXAM BE PERFORMED?
IN THE SHOWER Using the pads of your fi ngers, move around your entire breast in a circular pattern
moving from the outside to the center, checking the entire breast and armpit area. Check both breasts each month feeling for any lump, thickening or hardened knot. Notice any changes and get lumps evaluated by your health care provider.
IN FRONT OF A MIRROR Visually inspect your breasts with your arms at your sides. Next, raise your arms high
overhead.Look for any changes in the contour, any swelling, or dimpling of the skin or changes in
the nipples. Next, rest your palms on your hips and press fi rmly to fl ex your chest muscles. Left and right breasts will not exactly match — few women’s breasts do, so look for any dimpling, puckering or changes, particularly on one side.
LYING DOWNWhen lying down, the breast tissue spreads out evenly along the chest wall. Place a pillow
under your right shoulder and your right arm behind your head. Using your left hand, move the pads of your fi ngers around your right breast gently in small circular motions covering the entire breast area and armpit.
Use light, medium and fi rm pressure. Squeeze the nipple; check for discharge and lumps. Repeat these steps for your left breast.
CAN I RELY ON BREAST SELF-EXAMS ALONE TO BE SURE I AM BREAST CANCER FREE?
Mammography can detect tumors before they can be felt, so screening is key for early detection. But when combined with regular medical care and appropriate guideline-recommended mammography, breast self-exams can help women know what is normal for them so they can report any changes to their health care provider.
If you fi nd a lump, schedule an appointment with your doctor, but don’t panic — 8 out of 10 lumps are not cancerous. For additional peace of mind, call your doctor whenever you have concerns.
SYMPTOMS AND SIGNSEvery person should know the symptoms and signs of breast cancer, and any time an
abnormality is discovered, it should be investigated by a health care professional. Most people who have breast cancer symptoms and signs initially will notice only one or
two and the presence of these symptoms and signs do not automatically mean that you have breast cancer.
By performing monthly breast self-exams, you will be able to more easily identify any changes in your breast. Be sure to talk to your health care professional if you notice anything unusual.

A change in the skin texture or an enlargement of pores in the skin of the breast (some describe this as similar to an orange peel’s texture)
A lump in the breast (It’s important to remember that all lumps should be investigated by a health care professional, but not all lumps are cancerous.)
A CHANGE IN THE BREAST OR NIPPLE APPEARANCE
Any unexplained change in the size or shape of the breastDimpling anywhere on the breastUnexplained swelling of the breast (especially if on one
side only)Unexplained shrinkage of the breast (especially if on one
side only)Recent asymmetry of the breasts (Although it is common
for women to have one breast that is slightly larger than the other, if the onset of asymmetry is recent, it should be checked.)
Nipple that is turned slightly inward or invertedSkin of the breast, areola or nipple that becomes scaly,
red or swollen or may have ridges or pitting resembling the skin of an orange
ANY NIPPLE DISCHARGE — PARTICULARLY CLEAR DISCHARGE OR BLOODY DISCHARGE
It also is important to note that a milky discharge that is present when a woman is not breastfeeding should be checked by her doctor, although it is not linked with breast cancer.

cancer risk factors and ways you can better prevent this common disease.
The following risk factors increase your likelihood of developing breast cancer:
1. Family history – If one or more close family members have been diagnosed with breast cancer, speak with your doctor to see if you should receive more frequent mammograms and/or genetic testing.
2. Obesity – According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, overweight women are more likely to develop breast cancer after menopause. Maintain a healthy weight and exercise daily.
3. Alcohol intake – For optimal health, women should drink no more than one alcoholic beverage per day.
4. Age – Breast cancer risk increases with age.

What the heck is 3D Mammo? Now that 3D mammography is available at Olympic Medical Center,
you may be asking yourself how 3D is diff erent from digital mammography – the simple answer is 3D mammography fi nds cancers earlier while reducing false positives and unnecessary biopsies.
3D mammography enhances the abilities of radiologists to detect breast cancer early when it is more easily treatable. This advanced technology also is convenient, as it can be used in conjunction with traditional 2D mammograms.
HOW DOES IT WORK?During the 3D part of the mammogram, the X-ray arm sweeps in
a slight arc over the breast, taking multiple images. The process only adds a few seconds to the compression time. Then, a computer produces a 3D image of your breast tissue in one millimeter slices, providing greater visibility for radiologists to see breast detail in a way never before possible. They can scroll through images of your entire breast like pages of a book.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?“3D mammograms allow the radiologist to more easily detect smaller
cancers in dense breast tissue, but it benefi ts patients whose breasts are not dense as well,” says Hampton Sessions, MD, radiologist and medical director of mammography at Olympic Medical Center.
“These 3D images also allow the radiologist to recognize overlapping densities in the breast as normal breast tissue and decrease the need to recall the patient for additional views.”
Are you overdue for a screening, or do you need to schedule your fi rst mammogram? Call 565-9003 to make an appointment.

• WHAT IS A 3D MAMMOGRAPHY BREAST EXAM?3D mammography is a revolutionary new screening and
diagnostic tool designed for early breast cancer detection that can be done in conjunction with a traditional 2D digital mammogram.
During the 3D part of the exam, the X-ray arm sweeps in a slight arc over your breast, taking multiple breast images. Then, a computer
produces a 3D image of your breast tissue in one millimeter slices, providing greater visibility for the radiologist to see breast detail in a way never before possible. They can scroll
through images of your entire breast like pages of a book. The additional 3D images make it possible for a radiologist to gain a better understanding of your breast tissue during
screening and the con dence to reduce the need for follow-up imaging.
• WHY IS THERE A NEED FOR TOMOSYNTHESIS BREAST EXAMS? WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
With conventional digital mammography, the radiologist is viewing all the complexities of your breast tissue in a one at image. Sometimes breast tissue can overlap, giving the illusion of normal breast tissue looking like an abnormal area. By looking at the breast tissue in one millimeter slices, the radiologist can provide a more con dent assessment.
In this way, 3D mammography finds cancers missed with conventional 2D mammography. It also means there is less chance your doctor will call you back later for a “second look,” because now they can see breast tissue more clearly.
• WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SCREENING AND DIAGNOSTIC MAMMOGRAM?
A screening mammogram is your annual mammogram that is done every year. Sometimes the radiologist may ask you to come back for follow-up images which is called a diagnostic mammogram to rule out an unclear area in the breast or if there is a breast complaint that needs to be evaluated.
• WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING THE 3D MAMMOGRAPHY EXAM?
3D mammography complements standard 2D mammography and is performed at the same time with the same system. There is no additional compression required and it only takes a few more seconds longer for each view.
• IS THERE MORE RADIATION DOSE?
Very low X-ray energy is used during the exam, just about the same amount as a traditional mammogram done on lm.
• WHO CAN HAVE A 3D MAMMOGRAPHY EXAM?
It is approved for all women who would be undergoing a standard mammogram, in both the screening and diagnostic settings.

WHAT IS OPERATION UPLIFT?
HOW LONG HAS IT BEEN AROUND?
IS IT STRICTLY ABOUT BREAST CANCER?
Operation Uplift Operation Uplift is a nonprofi t, 501(c)3 support group for the North Olympic Peninsula. OU is a grass roots organization,
founded here in Port Angeles in 1983 so we are celebrating our 31st year. Although OU started as a breast cancer support group we became an all-cancer support group in 1989.
Operation Uplift is governed by a board of directors.
“CANCER SURVIVORS” — HOW DO YOU DEFINE “SURVIVOR?”
A person is a survivor from the minute of diagnosis; we want their thinking to be one of
surviving and we are there to give them all the support and help we can.
WHAT DOES OPERATION UPLIFT DO?In addition to providing support for the survivor, we
participate in health fairs, sponsor seminars and programs for prevention of cancer.
We sponsor two free breast health clinics for women who are without insurance or who have insurance that does not cover breast exams and/or mammograms. One Breast Health Clinic is in June, kicking off the annual “Pink UP” week in Port Angeles and another is held in October. Anytime during the year if a doctor or health care professional requests a voucher for a woman without insurance, we provide these vouchers to the doctor upon request. We work with Olympic Medical Center to make this an uncomplicated experience for the patient.
We speak to service groups, clubs, community groups and educational classes about cancer prevention and also
about what Operation Uplift does. We have a wide variety of wigs, turbans and scarves for
women going through chemotherapy treatment plus free prostheses and bras for mastectomy survivors.
We hold workshops and retreats on cancer-related topics. We have limited fi nancial assistance.Operation Uplift volunteers have been there and can
provide the one-on-one support and encouragement that is so important to recovery. OU encourages people to make informed decisions and to participate in their own health care. We do not actively promote any particular form of cancer treatment. We see our role as one of supporting people in the decisions they make.
We encourage a positive approach to cancer because there is substantial evidence that attitude directly aff ects the body’s ability to cope with disease. This positive approach includes providing support, education and information to the citizens in our communities.
WHAT ARE THE CHARGES FOR ALL THESE SERVICES? ARE THERE CERTAIN INCOME CRITERIA, (E.G. LOW INCOME)?
Operation Uplift does not charge for any services or items.

WHAT MAKES OPERATION UPLIFT UNIQUE?One-hundred percent of fundraising and donations go back to this
community. We are all volunteers, the executive director, the board of directors and all the other wonderful volunteers who make this program work. We are a grassroots organization, founded here in Port Angeles. We are not a branch of any cancer organization. We have no hidden agenda, we are there when we are needed. Operation Uplift doesn’t search out survivors; we are trying to become totally visible to our communities. What is contributed to OU stays right here … no overhead, no paid personnel … our volunteers are volunteering 100 percent, they don’t even reimbursed for travel or expenses.
How does it go? I’ve just been diagnosed with cancer and I call 457-5141 — What happens? If a volunteer is not available to immediately answer your call, leave your name and one will call you back. If you are a newly diagnosed survivor or calling for a survivor, the the “on-call” volunteer will make arrangements for a survivor with the same type of cancer to contact you and talk with you on the subject of your choosing. Volunteers can assist you with most questions or refer you to someone who can assist you. For other callers needing books, brochures, wigs, prostheses, turbans, etc., the on-call volunteer can arrange for you to come to the offi ce and get these items.
Operation Uplift also provides no-cost support services, outdoor activities and programs for women cancer survivors through workshops, retreats, outdoor activities. We will start off again next spring with our “Kick Off Celebration.” During the fall we have a free “Gentle Yoga” class for cancer survivors. Call 457-5141 for more information.
Our community has been terrifi c — of course, our community always is terrifi c when it comes to helping and fundraising support for those in need. Just when we needed it most,
Soroptimist International of Port Angeles Noon Club came to our rescue and has dedicated a yearly Golf Tournament to support OU and then added “Pink Up Port Angeles,” a weeklong series of fun and fundraising events that brought additional cancer awareness to the community. A number of local businesses and organizations have held fundraising events to support us and
they are truly appreciated.
WHAT HAVEN’T WE SAID THAT WE OUGHT TO SAY?If you know someone we could help, call us at 457-5141 or ask them to call us. We’ll do all
we can for them.
WHAT DO WE HOPE THAT PEOPLE WILL REMEMBER?Operation Uplift is here to assist and support; OU was
born here, we want to continue to serve our community. We are an all-volunteer organization and whatever funds are raised for Operation Uplift stay right here and are used for our own citizens. A big thank you to this wonderful community for your continued support!
Liz Zenonian Waud is the executive director of Operation Uplift. All donations are tax deductible.
Dozens of studies have confi rmed that physically active women have a lower risk of developing breast cancer. A lifelong habit of regular, vigorous exercise seems to off er the most benefi ts, but even women who become more active after menopause have a reduced risk compared with those who are sedentary.
One of the key reasons exercise is so benefi cial is its impact on female hormone estrogen levels. High levels of estrogen in the blood have been linked to breast cancer risk. Exercise lowers those levels and reduces several other risk factors as well. One study found regular physical activity cut women’s breast cancer risk by as much as 25 percent. Researchers suggest at least 30 minutes of exercise a day most days of the week. Even moderate activities such as a brisk walk at lunchtime can count toward breast cancer prevention.
Staying active, eating right – including lots of fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains in your meals – and maintaining regular screenings are all part of a smart breast health strategy. The American Cancer Society recommends clinical breast exams at least every three years and mammograms every year starting at age 40. You and your physician can discuss the best exam schedule based on your family history.

Every October, the international community promotes Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In the United States, one woman in nine will be a icted with this type of cancer during her lifetime. This is why it is so important to raise awareness of the ways to prevent this disease from developing.
Of course, priority has to be placed on screening because the sooner a cancer is detected, the higher the chances of survival are. For women 50 years and older, the simple fact of having a mammogram as well as a breast examination every two years reduces the death rate in 50- to 69-year-olds by more than 25%! So it’s clear that breast cancer rates would be reduced signi cantly if all women had regular breast examinations.
Doctors suggest several ways to reduce the risks of contracting this devastating disease. First and foremost, they recommend a diet rich in fruits and vegetables and, even more importantly, low in fat. Several studies demonstrate that a healthy diet can prevent certain cancers as well as heart disease.
Another component in the ght against cancer is regular exercise. By adding a period of light to moderate physical activity to your daily routine, you can help protect yourself. It doesn’t have to be anything complicated, just a walk around the neighborhood, playing outside with your children or even biking to work. And lastly, it is strongly
recommended to reduce alcohol consumption and to stay well away from cigarettes!
Three golden rules to remember:PREVENTION, PREVENTION AND... PREVENTION

Pink UP Port Angeles was a brain child of mine when I was frustrated with losing another loved one to cancer. Cancer touches all of us in some way, but it just happened to me for the fi fth time in less than a year. I know people are working toward a cure but there had to be something I could do that would make a diff erence in the
lives of those who are fi ghting the disease.
My friend Liz Waud has been involved with Operation Uplift forever. My thought was I could make a diff erence to those people who need help in Clallam County by helping Operation Uplift grow and serve more people. Pink, a color known to be for cancer, UP for Uplift, Port Angeles, because that’s the site, even though Operation Uplift serves all of Clallam

County (Forks and Sequim). I brought my idea to Operation Uplift and then to Soroptimist International Port Angeles. As Soroptimists we are charged to improve the lives of women and girls, through advocacy, awareness and action. Pink UP fi t those goals perfectly. SIPA voted to support Pink UP and work together to raise money, assisting Operation Uplift grow. That was six years ago and each year we do better.
To raise money to help Operation Uplift is only one section of Pink UP focus. We want to increase the awareness that there is help for those who are diagnosed with cancer, to help people
fi nd Operation Uplift. We also want to distribute information on the diff erent signs of cancer and that early detection is lifesaving. More funds allow Operation Uplift to serve more people, whether it’s with a free mammogram, a wig, a sleeve, prosthesis, a knowledgeable ear, assistance to treatment or activity.
I’m so proud of Pink UP, it has accomplished all these goals. I’m also so proud of Operation Uplift where 100 percent of the money donated goes to service for those who need help. All volunteer, the help doesn’t end with treatment. There is a very active survivors group that restores the soul of those who have battled cancer. Building bridges of friendship between those people who have been there, fought and won, attitude is clearly a part of success.
Pink UP is a part of my
life, it’s what I do — I hate cancer and if I can make it better for those who are in battle, I’m complete.
We have a week fi lled with activities, fundraisers and fun. We are getting help from the Port Angeles Association
of Realtors, the City of Port Angeles, other service clubs and we continue to grow.
Look out cancer, we’re going to wipe you out. Come and help. We can tell you how. Contact me at 360-457-5141 or [email protected].

Pink Up Port Angeles Thank You2014
It has been another smashing year for the history books. Pink Up Port Angeles week of fun was stretched out a bit more than 7 days and the results were tremendous. The Final count was over $38,000 together with the help of the Port Angeles Association of Realtors®.
The week began with a FREE Breast Health Clinic of which 20 women were assisted. That same day Soroptimist spread PINK ribbons all over Port Angeles to raise awareness of the weeks events. Sunday, the 3rd annual Dennis Wilcox Pooch Walk and the 5K Fun Run flooded the waterfront trail. The Pooch Walk was sponsored by Windermere Real Estate and Kathleen Graf LMP. The 5K was sponsored by Olympic Medical Center and PA Auto. Over $1,100 was raised. Everyone received a goodie bag and a t-shirt for participating.
The next event was Pink Out the Pier. Music surrounded
the dancers as the kids chased bubbles and drew art pieces on the concrete. Bubbles and chalk sponsored by Kandu Enterprises. Cancer prevention information and locations to receive assistance were distributed. This event was sponsored by Olympic Peninsula Title Company. FREE cookies baked by the culinary class of the Skill Center were provided by Angeles Collision Repair and Towing.
Friday, the shotgun-start of the Golf Tournament at Peninsula Golf Course started promptly at noon. Prizes offered for a hole-in-one included a 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE Truck, a resort vacation and a $500 shopping spree sponsored by Mac Ruddell Community Fund. A reception held at Peninsula Golf Club included heavy hors d’ oeuvres, prizes and a 50/50 raffle This event brought in over $5,000.
Saturday, a super-bake-sale took place at Swain’s. Items sold included Soroptimist baked pies and goodies, sales of
Pink T-Shirts and jewelry. Great job, as almost $1,700 was raised from the sale.
Saturday, June 28 was the Chestnut Cottage Spaghetti Feed. Celebrity servers took over the restaurant for an evening of fun. Cash donations exceeded $12,000 including $9,000 in tips. A huge gift basket from Franni’s Gift Expressions was raffled off to a lucky diner.
This year was a first for our city council to declare by proclamation that the city name be changed for the “Pink Up Week” to “Pink Angeles”, a pink flag flew over City Hall recognizing the fight against cancer and the help that is available from Operation Uplift.
Peninsula Daily News and Pen Print are extraordinary sponsors, we could not do the work we do without their help. We look forward to 2015 and have a few new events in mind to raise more money for Operation Uplift.
