A need for Calibration Services in the NFL?Most gauges sold commercially for sports balls do not list an accuracy specification and do not
come with a traceable calibration. Our experience is that +/- 3% (of full scale) would be an optimistic specification for gauges of this type. Assuming a +/- 3% accuracy, a gauge with a range of 0 to 15 PSI would provide results no better than +/- 0.45 PSI. A more realistic specification of +/- 5% for these low cost gauges would yield results that could be off by as much as 0.75 PSI.
The NFL states the acceptable range for inflation is from 12.5 to 13.5 PSI, so these gauges are not up to the task.
We would suggest they should be using calibrated industrial Grade A devices. With these, a 15 PSI gauge with a +/- 1 percent of full scale specification could provide readings as accurate as +/- 0.15 PSI.
To maintain accuracy over time, gauges should be calibrated at defined intervals using equipment traceable to a known national standard (such as NIST). This could be done by a calibration provider such as Cal-Tek Co., Inc.

Hone Right manufactures eight models of heavy duty, high capacity machines featuring a massive cross beam connecting two columns, reinforced by specially shaped ribs to increase structural rigidity, dampen vibration and reduce deflection. The smallest weighs about 123,000 lbs. and the largest tips the scale at about 195,000 lbs. These heavyweights have powerful drive motors on both the horizontal and vertical spindle wheel heads. The vertical wheel head can be manually tilted up to 50˚ right or left through a worm gear transmission for angular grinding. Other key features include linear ways and 8 blocks on the Z- axis for solid support, no chatter and a better surface finish. Add double-V slideways on the base and you start to see how robust these machines really are. Ready to do large work, the smallest machine has a table capacity of 11,000 lbs., a table area of 177" x 70" and a table travel of 161". The largest machine will hold up to 33,000 lbs., has a table area of 334" x 90" and a table travel of 318”. Custom designed machines and configurations are also available.
