Special Plate Transferability Guide

Overview Recognizing when a special plate is assigned to a vehicle with active registration, and determining if the vehicle receiving the special plates has current registration are important steps to take prior to beginning a plate transfer. This guide provides examples to aid in this process.
For your reference in this guide:
Car A = Vehicle that held/holds the special plate. Car B = Vehicle receiving the special plate.
Note: Examples are based on the date of publication.
Review Car A Special Plates cannot be assigned to a vehicle with current registration. The plate will not be transferable. Review the vehicle record for Car A to determine if plates are assigned with current registration.
Important: Do not rely on the information in the Vehicle Header. You have to open the vehicle record.
Example 1 – Currently assigned
• The Special plate is assigned to this vehicle with current (Active) registration through
2/29/20. • The Special Plate is Non-Transferable until:
o Changed to a different one of the customer’s choice if the vehicle is still in the owner’s possession.
o Removed if the vehicle is no longer in the owner’s possession.

Example 2 – Expired
• Registration expired on 2/28/2019 • The Special Plate is Transferable.
Example 3 – Removed
• The Special Plate was removed on 2/22/2019. • Registration expired on 3/1/2019. • The Special Plate is Transferable.

Example 4 – Changed
• Personalized RV plate was on the record until 2/28/2019. • Changed to a standard RV plate. • Plate is Transferable.
Example 5 – Future Registration
• Personalized Plate is assigned to this Vehicle with a future registration period that starts on
8/1/2019. • Plate is Non-Transferable. • Customer would have to wait until 8/1/2019 to change or remove the plate on Car A.

Review Car B Registration must be current on Car B before attempting to transfer special plates to it. Review the vehicle record for Car B to determine if registration is current.
Important: Do not rely on the information in the Vehicle Header. You have to open the vehicle record.
Example 1 – Current Registration
• Registration is current through 10/31/2019 • The vehicle is eligible for a plate transfer

Example 2 – Expired Registration
• Registration on this vehicle expired on 2/28/2019. • An error message would prevent you from proceeding with the plate transfer. • Customer would need to renew prior to initiating a plate transfer transaction.
Example 3 – Future Registration
• Registration period begins on 6/1/2019. • An error message would prevent you from proceeding with the plate transfer. • Customer would need to wait until 6/1/2019 to initiating a plate transfer transaction.
