Northern Lines Theatre Company SY WY
SHYLOCK – A new play written and directed by Javaad Alipoor, Artistic Director of Northern Lines Theatre
Company. We specialise in new work reflecting the experiences of immigrant and refugee communities in
Bradford, giving access to professional engagement in theatre to those for whom drama schools may not be
an option. The Merchant of Venice is arguably Shakespeare’s most racist play. This reworking of the original
play combines Shakespeare’s story with influences from seminal films The Godfather and Scarface. Relocated
to Bradford, it tells of the rise and fall of Shylock, a refugee, a father and a loan shark. Challenging the racism
in the original work, Shylock will explore the perspectives of traditionally supporting characters to draw out
other sides to the story.
Free for Artsmark schools: workshop with Northern Lines, with either teachers or pupils (14yrs +), examining
the issues provoked by the production - refugees, migrants, prejudice, integration, inter-generational cultural
tensions etc – reflecting the Ofsted SMSC agenda, community cohesion and citizenship.

There is very little we do not know about Saltaire World Heritage Site and we regularly answer questions about the social history, philanthropy, history of the buildings, conservation, town planning, architecture, regeneration, recycling, textiles, the dyeing industry, medicine and of course the Victorians. “One girl said it was the best school trip she had ever been on…we would like to book our visit for next year.” Derrick Rooke, Lightcliffe Primary School £3.25 per person for children aged 12 years and under instead of £3.75 for a costumed guided walk of Saltaire World Heritage Site starting inside the Saltaire United Reformed Church.

York Theatre Royal offers support and engagement to York schools and the surrounding areas in the pursuit of Artsmark. We offer a wide range of opportunities for schools to enable them to engage and promote young people in the arts through backstage tours, theatre workshops and partnership programmes. York Theatre Royal offer all Artsmark schools discounted workshop rates at £125 (usually £150) for half day and £200 (usually £225) for a full day for any workshop that takes place with us here at the theatre.
