Special Focus... Special Appeal Paddle Raise ProjectsAs has been the tradition since the inception of the Wine and Salmon Festival, Eugene Southtowne Rotary features a “Special Appeal “ paddle raise, for selected projects. The Southtowne SpeakEasy is proud to continue this tradition with one local and one international appeal. Both focus on education and scholarship, what we at Southtowne Rotary consider to be “the Key to Success and Freedom.” Watch for the special presentation this evening, and give gener-ously to these two great projects!

The “Bruce Shaw Scholarship Fund” for Homeless Youth Bruce Shaw had a 47 year history with Rotary and lived the life of an exemplary Rotar-ian. He made a huge impact in our club and in the greater District 5110. He originally joined Rotary in 1971 in California, but after he moved to Eugene, he joined the South-towne Club. serving as Club President in 1999-2000 and again in 2016-2017. He was Assistant District Governor and District Annual Giving Chair for three years, and later was awarded the Rotarian of the Year Award. His favorite projects were those which included fellowship, travel and exchange. As he felt strongly that the good Rotary did throughout the world, made an impact in ways that almost no other work can do. But locally, Bruce was a tireless fund-raiser for countless non-profits and education funds. He was most touched by the need to raise up those in need, through educational opportunities, knowing that education was important to a fulfilling, satisfied life. For this reason, The Bruce Shaw Scholarship Fund for Homeless Youth addresses the following:

1. Homelessness is a major problem in our community. Our Southtowne Rotary Club is invested in finding answers and solutions to help our neediest citizens. This appeal is aimed at homeless students who are struggling to improve their lives through advancing their education.

2. “Service Above Self” is a slogan we Rotarians frequently recite, Bruce exemplified a life of service to which we all should aspire.

The Bruce Shaw Scholarship Fund will ultimately be administered through the Southtowne Rotary Foundation Scholar-ship committee to select recipients. Homeless students who are graduating from a Eugene 4J high school and are ap-plying for higher education at our local community college or other Oregon colleges will be eligible. With a combina-tion of funding for both immediate use and endowment, the fund will be sustainable so as to produce enough income to fund scholarships in perpetuity.

**The Foundation has pledged to match dollar for dollar everything raised with the paddle raise up to $15,000.

Books and Teaching Supplies for the village school in Buyijja, Uganda Located in the dense jungle area of rural Uganda, Buyijja is a small, undeveloped village with no improvements of clean water, electricity, or other modern necessities. However, since 2014, “Friends of Buyijja,” a non-profit organization created by Eugene Southtowne Rotarian, Patric Miller and his family, has provided the school 13 terms of books and teaching supplies, sanitary bathrooms, recreation equipment, rain collection tanks, and countless small gifts of shoes, teacher support and aid. With just 8 teachers serving 270 students, the school has out-per-formed any expectation, increasing their passing scores for national testing from 24% to 93% passing.

Beginning with a District 5110 Grant in 2017, for a bore-hole well and solar lighting for the village school, Eugene Southtowne Rotary became an active partner in this mission. That support grew with a donation of $500 for books and teaching supplies in 2018. Today, we are asking for a full year of funding for School Books and Supplies, which will allow Friend of Buyijja to focus their fund-raising efforts on a much-needed teacher/student dormitory and vocational education classroom. Your generous donation will offer Hope and Love by providing them key educational op-

portunities, which can enable them to escape their life of poverty. 2

If you enter a bid on this line on any Silent Auction bid sheet, your name will be entered into a spe-cial drawing for a wine package. Further, you are not restricted to bidding on the yellow highlighted line for only one item; you may bid on the yellow highlighted line on any number of items, provided that these lines are open on the bid sheets and others have not already bid higher amounts for these items.
