Candace Maruk was hon-oured last week as Stettler’s female citizen of the year.

The presentation was made Oct. 24 during the Stettler Re-gional Board of Trade awards dinner.

“It’s a pretty big surprise for me to win,” said Maruk, who moved from Hanna more than 10 years ago to pursue a career and lives in Stettler with her husband Steve Maruk and their three-year-old son Gage.

“I’m very shocked to get this, but it’s an honour.”

Her nomination briefi ng for the award mentioned that “Can-dace is walking proof that no good deed is ever too small.”

“You don’t have to be rich, you don’t have to be grand in your gestures, but every ef-fort in your community is no-ticed and appreciated,” said her nominator.

For her 31st birthday, Can-dace challenged herself, her family and her friends to per-form 31 acts of random kind-ness — and son Gage was also involved.

The results were random acts of kindness throughout Alberta and British Columbia.

Those acts included taking a basket of children’s activi-ties to the hospital emergency waiting room.

Gage fi lled candy machines at Wal-Mart with quarters and walked away, leaving a pre-paid surprise for the next child.

“Candace has spread herkindness throughout our com-munity and extended it out-ward,” her nomination read.

This year, Candace and hercousin adopted two High Riverfl ood victim families to supportwhile also aiding her familywhen personal tragedy struck.

Candace and her cousin can-vassed for funds to purchasemuch-needed items for thefl ooded families.

“Her support assisted theprocesses of rebuilding theirlives (after the spring fl oods),”her nomination papers read.

Each Christmas, Candace also adopts a local family.

She offers assistance withgroceries and gifts and directlyhelps another family celebratea memorable Christmas.

2009 BUSINESS OF THE YEAR AWARD

Prominent provincial highways and rural routes form a network of entry points into Stettler, regarded as the heart of Alberta.

All too often, those passages double as an exit point. In search of greener pastures, so to speak, people

leave the region on a daily basis to shop, work or play in other parts of the province — or beyond.

While it’s sometimes necessary to go elsewhere for essential health services, and it can be enlightening to visit and explore other communities, there are also many hidden gems close to home.

Businesses in the Stettler region run the gamut from the homespun operations that have survived — and fl ourished — for generations to those representing higher-profi le brands with all the trappings of contem-porary times.

The business community in town needs the support of Stettler-area folks who live, work and raise families in the region.

What’s more, those residents need that same healthy economy in their community. A prosperous economic picture contributes to a vibrant town, which Stettler has proven to be for generations.

If local people invest in the community, the ripple

effect is enhanced recreational and health facilities, better schools and a greater diversity of shopping andleisure options.

But to accomplish those goals, and solidify the long-term population of Stettler, consumers need to practisewhat many people preach: shop local.

At the least, Stettler-area residents need to give localbusinesses the opportunity to compete for their shoppingdollars. Visit and chat with local proprietors to comparewhat might well be favourable deals.

Even in cases where they’re not necessarily the bestbargains, the difference still probably beats the cost of atank of gas for a trip to Red Deer or Camrose in searchof an elusive “sale.”

As with any town, Stettler banks on the support ofits own. While tourists come and go, depending on theseason and the attractions, the lifeblood of a healthyeconomy in town is a thriving business climate gener-ated by the people who live here year-round.

The face of downtown Stettler has experiencedmultiple changes in the past year, as a few businesseshave departed and others have set up shop. Those newbusinesses — and the established operations — deservelocal support. — Stettler Independent

A group of Stettler businesses has made great strides to work together to promote their businesses and at-tract new customers.

Known as the Stettler Prize Con-sortia, Kevin Falkenberg of Auto Xtras and Gordon Lawlor and son Mike of Lawlor Jewelry initiated the marketing partnership two years ago.

The group, which also includes Auto Trust and Artemis Comput-ers, John’s Clothing, Romar Power Sports, WISH Kitchen and Old-Fash-ioned Candy, uses the partnership to cross-promote their products and services to each other’s customers.

“Typically, the customer is part of a family unit and is interested in more than just the initial purchase,” said Falkenberg, who initiated the project.

“They have a wide variety of needs and wants, and this can help them find what’s already locally available.”

This year, the Stettler group hosted two promotional campaigns, which included St. Patrick’s Day highway signage and in-store give-away cards.

“The whole goal is to reach out to other businesses’ customers and inform them about products and ser-vices they offer,” Mike Lawlor said.

“We want to be cost-effective to get the message out,” Falkenberg said.

“With so many options, it’s so hard to measure the effectiveness of advertising.”

Collectively, participating busi-nesses also engage their customers using newspaper, radio, websites, online and social media.

“Stettler’s reputation for word of mouth to tell about business is im-

peccable,” said Lawlor, who’s op-timistic the endeavour will expandwith more businesses.

“It will grow exponentially.”“We’ve got lots of more interest,”

Falkenberg added.Besides marketing, the group also

works to build up business in otherways.

“We get together regularly to dis-cuss different marketing techniquesand make plans for upcoming pro-motions,” Lawlor said.

“One of the other advantages ofthe group is to talk as business own-ers and share solutions on commoneveryday problems,” Falkenbergsaid.

Opportunities for other businessesto join the group with other promo-tions are planned for the new year.

At this year’s Stettler businessand citizenship awards ceremony, the Stettler Prize Consortia was rec-ognized with a marketing award.

2013 Business of the Year!Did you know:- METALEX has brought in skilled design/fabrica on/erec on sta from as far away as Mexico, Ukraine, Russia, Lithuania, and Ireland?- All erec on sta are trained to the highest industry caliber for safety?

- METALEX operates with a be er-than-industry average for safety incidents?- Alberta has some of the most stringent safety legisla on in the world?- We employ over 70 people across Alberta, half of which operate out of Ste ler?- Several employees have been here since day one (2001)?

- Our smallest building takes one erector less than a day to complete?- Our largest project to date involved 10 erectors and took nearly 3 months to complete?- Two-thirds of the me required to erect a metal building is spent on a ladder, sca old, man-li or roof?- ALL design and fabrica on is completed en rely in our Ste ler facility?- METALEX vehicles travelled over half a million kilometers last year?- METALEX can provide emergency response for buildings in case of disaster?- METALEX sta ipped over 1,000 hamburgers and smokies for customers and special events this past summer?- METALEX provides intangible employee bene ts that include me o for personal/family development including hockey, rodeo, racing, dance, music fes vals, marathons and more?

A key to our success and growth has been management’s commitment to provide quick turn-around. People familiar with the Oil & Gas industry recognize that if it wasn’t for the last minute, many projects would never get done. Our people are on a par with the military for preparedness, and ability to respond to crisis situa ons. This has forced METALEX to develop and implement solid processes designed toensure success. METALEX further invests heavily in training – Customer service, Project

Management, Leadership, Supervisory Training, and more. We develop and maintain our own quality standards in conjunc on with such industry codes as S-16, S-136, W-47, A660, which arereinforced with sta involvement, and industry audit-reviewed annually.

Some of our biggest, best and most loyal customers are here in the Heartland. There’s no ques on that Edmonton, Calgary and Red Deer produce some of the nest industrial equipment in the world, but on a per capita basis, the

Ste ler region is a manufacturing dynamo. A combina on of strong work ethic, intrinsic customer service, reliable supplier-chain and git ‘er done a tude provides a lengthy list of customers that have been calling us since day one. We can’t walk on water, but we can turn a phone call into a building!

Time is in short supply during the Christmas sea-son. Between the shopping, cooking, baking and wrapping, there seems to be precious few hours to tackle anything else. Those who desire an old-fashioned, homemade holiday can still experience all of the seasonal magic by deferring some of the work to local small businesses.Decorating

Much of the splendor of the holiday season comes directly from the intricately decorated houses and storefronts. Twinkling lights and garlands of fresh pine boughs can instantly transform any building. Decorating a home can take an entire day or more, but delegating the work to a decorating service will provide you with professional-looking results as well as free time to tackle other obligations. Deco-rators can work outdoors stringing lights and creat-ing a winter wonderland in the fraction of the time it takes homeowners to decorate their homes.

BakingWhat would the holiday season

be without the sweet treats and invit-ing smells of freshly baked goods? The cooler weather is an ideal time to turn on the oven and whip up a batch of cookies or cakes with the aroma of pungent cinnamon and nutmeg. Others would prefer des-serts that provide homemade fl air without the effort. Local bakeries experience an upswing in busi-ness this time of year as shoppers fl ock to choose among the pastries, cookies and pies in display cases. Whether a dessert comes directly from your kitchen or that of a lo-cal confectionary shop, chances are guests will enjoy each delectable bite. If you have a custom-order dessert in mind, consult with the bakery well in advance to ensure

your dessert will be available when hosting friends and family.

CateringRoasts and lavish tables are part

of the holiday season, but so are the corporate parties and cocktail events that comprise a social sea-son. Catering a party is an easy way to offer guests delicious food with minimal work.

Local caterers can provide every-thing from sit-down dinners to buf-fet spreads. Some restaurants that don’t normally cater events may offer special packages this time of year. Different customers are vying for the services of caterers within a small window of time.

PartiesSocial calendars fi ll up come

November and December. When hosting a gathering of co-workers,

family or friends, choose local ven-ues for social events so travel to andfrom the party is easier on guests.Parties can take place anywhere, including theatres, bowling alleys, wine stores, and fl oral nurseries.

GiftingShopping at local vendors often

means more personalized serviceand a less stressful experience.Develop a rapport with a favouriteshop owner so that he or she canalert you to private sales or put cov-eted items on the side. A specialtystore may have that unique gift noteasily found elsewhere, and shopowners may be able to special-or-der bulk gifts. Smaller retailers mayalso offer specialized services, suchas gift-wrapping or personal shop-ping. Shopping locally can helpholiday shoppers save time and sup-port their communities. — Metro

Budgeting is important for businesses big and small. But while corpo-rations or larger organi-zations might be able to stretch their budgets when necessary, small businesses often don’t have the luxury of such leeway.

Because small business-es are often less financial-ly flexible than their larger competitors and counter-parts, small-business own-ers tend to agonize over their budgets when starting out. Part of that struggle

might stem from small-business owners who spe-cialize in their trade, but have little experience at running a business.

But determining a small-business budget is essential to a business’ success, as it helps owners determine if they have enough money to fund the business and its potential expansion, while also providing owners with a steady income.

Taking the time to prepare a practical-but-detailed budget is a key factor in the viability of small businesses.

Each industry is different, and bud-gets that work for one business will not necessarily work for another. But the following tips can help business owners develop an effective budget for their businesses, regardless of their in-dustries.

— Understand your industry. Un-derstanding your industry and knowing your product are two different things. When establishing a budget for a new business, small-business owners should familiarize themselves with the indus-try they will be joining.

— Calculate cost of machinery and materials. The prices of materi-als can fl uctuate depending on supply and demand, but small-business own-ers developing a budget can research how such costs fl uctuated in the past, or speak with business owners to de-termine how much of their initial cash supply and future revenue will need to be allocated to production costs.

Another thing to learn about the in-dustry is if there are certain trends that might dictate your revenue stream. If

you fail to do so, you might be forced to lay off workers, close your doors,or both.

— Know what to do with your revenue. Developing a budget for a startup can be tricky, as it’s hard to know how to allocate your revenue when you don’t know how much rev-enue your business is going to gener-ate. But that doesn’t mean you can’t allocate that yet-to-be-earned revenue. In fact, doing just that is entirely neces-sary. Determining your operating costs, which include cost of materials, labour, the rent or mortgage on the property where your business is housed and taxes among other expenses, helps you know how much revenue you’ll need to generate to make the business work.

— Give yourself some breathing room. When developing a budget for your small business, it’s important to build some breathing room into that budget. That can provide some leeway should your estimated revenue fall short of your actual revenue or your business takes off and you suddenly fi nd your-self in need of money in order to meet customer demand and/or expand staff.

— Develop a secondary emer-gency budget. Figures regarding the survival rates of new small businessesvary signifi cantly. Conventional wis-dom has long suggested such busi-nesses fail far more often than they suc-ceed, and many go up in fl ames ratherquickly. However, according to the Bu-reau of Labor Statistics, roughly half ofall new businesses survive fi ve years ormore, and about one-third survive a de-cade or more. But surviving fi ve yearsis not necessarily a 50-50 proposition,as small-business owners who planahead for emergencies are likely in bet-ter positions to make it to 10 years thanthose that don’t.

When developing a secondaryemergency budget, include cost-cuttingmeasures, which can make it easier tomake tough decisions if money be-comes tight.

— Review the budget regularly.Once the business has opened, ownersshould review their budgets to deter-mine if money is being spent as wiselyas possible. You might have overesti-mated certain costs, which can free upmoney to grow the business. — Metro

A great business plan can go a long way toward transforming an idea into a successful business. Though no two businesses are the same, good business plans tend to follow a similar formula:

— Don’t be too wordy. Poten-tial investors, whether they’re venture capitalists, family members or lending institutions, don’t want to be handed a manifesto masquerading as a busi-ness plan. A good business plan is brief and gets to the point early on, spelling out why the business is worthy of an investment and how it is going to be successful.

— Defi ne what makes your busi-ness unique. Your business plan is sim-ilar to a sales pitch, one that you will

need to turn your idea into a business. A successful sales pitch should defi ne what makes your business unique. Clearly defi ne what separates your business from others and why these dif-ferences make you and your business idea a solid investment.

— Resist going overboard. When crafting a business plan to present to potential lenders or investors, business owners may be tempted to offer quanti-ty over quality. But successful startups often begin small, selling a particular idea or item, and then diversify their offerings after establishing a customer base and experiencing a prolonged pe-riod of success. Investors and lenders are aware of this and might be turned

off by a business plan that makes busi-ness owners appear less like an expertand more like a jack-of-all-trades.

— Be specifi c as to how you willgenerate revenue. Good businessplans clearly indicate how businessowners plan to generate revenue. Sim-ply selling products won’t be enough toconvince savvy investors.

— Defi ne your market. When de-fi ning the market for your business, include its size and the specifi c peoplewithin that market you intend to target.

— Make projections. A strongbusiness plan will include estimatesas to how many future customers youhope to attract and the cost of acquiringthose customers. — Metro
