Sumas Prairie used to be the bottom of a very large, shallow, freshwater lake surrounded by extensive wetlands that were a part of the Fraser River watershed. The lakes and rivers of the Sumas watershed supported an abundance of fi sh (sturgeon, trout, salmon) and birds (Hutchins geese, whistling swans, white-fronted geese) and served as main transportation routes for the First Nations population for a millennium. The lake was drained in the early 1920s.

Learn, create, runThe Envision Financial Run for Water is
an opportunity for participants of various ages and skill levels to get outside and exercise, while raising funds for people in the developing world who are lacking the basic necessity of clean drinking water.
Students at local schools are also given the opportunity to contribute to the cause with the Envision a Better World: Learn, Create, Run program.
Last year, more than $350,000 was raised to help build water projects in the most deprived areas of southern Ethio-pia, with a quarter of those funds raised through student efforts.
Education director for the Run for Water Society, Betty Baerg, explains the program. “Partner teachers commit to using some of our learning resources around themes of social justice and water issues, and we provide assemblies to elementary schools and a youth lead-ership event to middle and high schools.”
Many schools use the opportunity to fundraise and host school-based events during the months of April and May, such as MEI’s Empathy Walk.
“Students carry jerry cans to a nearby
water and those without - about one in seven people in the world don’t have access to clean water,” said Baerg.
“We also help with the belief that their actions can make a difference in the lives of others.”
With nearly 50 schools participating in the program, the initiative to provide water to impoverished regions has truly become a community incentive for all ages.
“People appreciate participating in a well-executed running event, while knowing they are involved in something bigger than themselves” said Baerg.
“The event could not have grown as it has without an enormous amount of fantastic volunteer support, an incredibly generous group of financial sponsors and a community that cares!”
Any school that wants to get involved can send a message to [email protected] to learn more or to sign up for the 2014/2015 season.

water body, fill them and then trek back to get in touch with the difficult reality of what girls around the world do every day,” said Baerg.
“This year, students at WJ Mouat, Little Mountain Elementary, Abbotsford Tradi-
tional Middle and Margaret Stenersen are trying their hand at carrying water as well.”
The program focuses on several import-ant lessons, including teaching students to appreciate living in a country with an abundance of water, as it is essential for human life. “We demonstrate the global disparity between those with access to

WIth the emergence of warmer spring
days, it’s time to lighten your ward-

to go. Think cropped pants and ballet
flats or a crisp white T-shirt paired
with a geometric-patterned skirt.
Thinking ahead for summer or plan-

two-piece swimsuit is a fun addition
and nicely plays up bronzed skin,
but don’t forget to be sun-smart.

Washing awayhair mythsMyths abound when it comes to hair care. It’s time to wash away the fiction from the facts.
DO I NEED TO WASH MY HAIR EVERY DAY?Waiting a day or more between washes actually can be beneficial. Hair is fiber, and the more you wash it, the worse it’s going to look. Waiting enables oils from the scalp to travel down the hair shaft and keep the cuticle healthy.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I CONDITION MY HAIR?Overuse of conditioner can actually contribute to making hair look dull, dry and weighed down. Coarse or dry hair usually needs conditioning a few times a week while those with naturally moist hair may only need to condition once per week. If you have thin hair, only apply conditioner to the ends so it doesn’t get weighed down.
HOW IMPORTANT IS LATHER IN SHAMPOO?Shampoos that generate rich lather are not necessarily better for your hair. Sulfates, generally the first ingredient in shampoo, makes water feel more wet and spreads the cleaning ingredients more readily across the hair shaft. However, these same cleansers can dehydrate glands and strip the scalp of essential oils and natural moisture. Many stylists recommend sulfate-free shampoos because they are more gentle on the hair. People who colour their hair may find they also help retain hair colour longer.

STUDENTLIFE
DESSA BAYROCKSTUDENTUNIVERSITY OF THE FRASER VALLEY
After years of work, the big day has finally arrived.
You wake up and it feels like any other day, but it’s not.
You drive to the Abbotsford Centre. You put on a robe that looks like some-thing out of Harry Potter. You vainly attempt to pin that stupid square hat in a position that doesn’t make you look like a dork, and you fail.
But nobody cares, because everybody looks like a dork in that hat. More im-portantly, everyone wearing that hat — 600 of you, lined up in alphabetical order — is graduating today.
After years of hard work, you’ve final-ly reached your goal. That degree, that diploma, that certificate is yours.
It should be boring — 600 students crossing the stage one by one — but it’s not. You see people you’ve taken classes with, people you’ve passed in the hall, people you’ve sat next to at
a campus pub night. And somehow you’re proud of each and every one of them.
Finally, it’s your turn. You stand. You climb the stairs to the stage. Your heart flutters in your chest like a drunken butterfly. Is your hand too sweaty? What is too sweaty?
Here’s the trick to convocating: don’t worry.
Smile big.
This is your moment.
Everyone is proud of you.
Congratulations Grads!

FREELOCAL DELIVERYServing the Valley for over 47 years
Buying outdoor furnitureChoosing the right outdoor furniture for your patio is about
more than finding the most comfortable chair. Here are a few
things to consider when shopping for your outdoor space.
FLEXIBILITY
Consider the flexibility of each piece. Versatile pieces can help you set-up the perfect space, whether you are entertaining or trying to escape and enjoy some peace and quiet. Consider adding a stand alone umbrella you can move from place to place or a drop-leaf or collapsible table that you can extended when entertaining.
Be sure not to overlook weight: heavy outdoor furniture might
seem more stable, but is also more difficult to move.
UV-TESTED FABRIC
Are the fabrics truly outdoor fabrics? Be sure to check to see if they have been “UV” Tested. Fabrics that have not been UV treated can fade prematurely.
DO YOU HAVE THE STORAGE SPACE?
Sometimes covers do not provide enough protection in the winter, especially for materials like wicker. Either have stor-age space for your furniture or buy something that you will be able to use indoors during the winter months.
ALUMINUM FRAMESLook for metal frames that are made of aluminum instead of steel to avoid rusting.

PROVIDED BY ROBERTSON HEARINGCANADIAN ACADEMY OF AUDIOLOGY
Most of us take our hearing health for granted. Until we are confronted with a hearing loss we don’t truly appreciate the role hearing plays in our daily lives. Your audiologist is a primary health care professional who evaluates and treats hearing loss and provides education on the prevention of hearing and balance problems.
DO YOU THINK YOU HAVE A HEARING LOSS?Often it is difficult to tell because hearing loss usually occurs gradually such that the person is not aware of it. Use the following indicators to see if you MAY have a hearing loss:
If you experience any or all of these problems on a consistent basis, you may have a hearing loss. You are not alone. 10% of the Canadian population suffer from some level of hearing loss; as many as half of these people are under the age of 65. You may not notice hearing loss in yourself, but others around you will.
WHAT CAN YOU DO? If you suspect that you may have a hearing loss you should see a qualified hearing professional to have your hearing evaluated. They will provide the full range of tests necessary to determine the exact nature of your hearing loss. No one is too young to have a hearing test, even a newborn.

We’d like to invite the commu-nities of Abbotsford and Mission to join us.
Teams of 8 to 15 people fundraise individually and as a team to help the Canadian Cancer Society save lives and support those who are facing cancer. Relay participants make a commitment to raise at least $100 and are supported with the tools to reach their goals.
At Relay, teams gather with can-cer survivors at Rotary Park track and take turns walking laps. Each team is encouraged to keep at least one mem-ber on the track at all times, while all around them the event is in full swing. As darkness falls we circle the

Abbotsford is a great place to get out and enjoy the fresh air, and it has some of the best trails for people of all ages to enjoy. One of Abbotsford’s newest outdoor attractions, Discovery Trail provides an alternative transportation option, and allows families to enjoy nature and exercise in and around their community. Discovery Trail caters to a wide array of skill levels, ages, and different recreational activities such as running, rollerblading, walking, and cycling.
My dad, Harv Bergen, owns Life Cycles Bike Shop - a local store that’s been selling bikes and related merchandise for a over 20 years now. Recently, we rode Discovery Trail in
its entirety. This hadn’t even been our first attempt; a few months prior, we called it quits a little after our departure once the hail started to fall and the bitter cold set in, but we were determined to give it another try. We started off in the west end of Abbotsford at Gardner Park, and wound our way through Fishtrap Creek Park, Clearbrook Park, as well as many other smaller parks along the way. I rode my Rocky Mountain Trailhead 29 - from Life Cycles - along the paved pathways, the rougher off-road segments, the hills, and the boardwalks that make up the diversity of Discovery Trail. If you haven’t discovered Discovery Trail for yourself yet, I would encourage you to take advantage of it - whether it be in short chunks, or travelling the whole 30+ kilometer route.
Happy trails

Does the start of the BBQ season have you reaching for your rusty fire extinguisher as nightmares of “flame broiled” but still raw-on-the - inside chicken or soldiers of aspar-agus and delicate seafood lost to the spaces between the grills keep you awake at night? Farmer Rob’s favorite new barbeque accessory has to be the award winning Island Grillstone. This square slab of porous volcanic stone covers half our grill, and it’s unique properties maintain natural flavor, moisture and nutrients in the food, as well as eliminate the dreaded flare-ups. After the initial seasoning of oil and heating, it’s ready to use without any more effort or cleaning. Follow-ing each use, once cooled, you sim-
ply flip it over to the underside that’s been naturally cleaned by the heat of the BBQ. Perfectly grilled fresh sausages and chicken, delicate seafood and summer vegetables are our favorite things to grill on the stone. To help kick-start your sum-mer barbecuing season simply bring this original article to Lepp Farm Market, (no photocopies please) and we’ll give you FIVE DOLLARS OFF your stone. I guarantee you’ll be the hero of your next backyard BBQ as you present perfectly grilled foods to share with your family and friends. And you can finally say good rid-dance to the grimy spray bottle and fire extinguisher lurking on your patio.

INGREDIENTS 1 cup toasted almonds, finely chopped in blender
1/4 cup soya sauce
1/4cup chicken broth
2 tbsp vegetable oil
2 tbsp fresh lemon juice
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1 tsp freshly grated ginger
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper (add more, if desired)
6 chicken breast pieces, boneless & skinless
DIRECTIONS
To toast almonds, place them in a heavy skillet and stir often over medium heat until golden brown. Watch carefully as they go from golden brown to burnt very quickly!
Combine all marinade ingredients. Cut each breast into 3 lengthwise strips, marinate at least 2 hours or overnight.
Thread strips onto skewers, 2 or 3 strips per skewer, and grill about 7 minutes per side, until no longer pink.
If you’re lazy like me, ask our friendly butchers to de-bone some skinless chicken thighs for you, marinate them whole and barbecue them on an Island Grillstone. Watch them sizzle and cook in the juices of the marinade right on the stone!
