Page 2: Special Features - Meet the Storm

I think a lot of people assume once you have tasted success that it’s easy to let foot off the gas pedal. However, I can assure you I have never been more moti vated to repeat the success our program had last season on and off the ice! This season sets up to be an incredibly exciti ng year at the Brindy, a barn we only lost in twice all of last year’s remarkable season.

I’d like to fi rst thank all the Storm staff , players, volunteers and sponsors for not only their eff orts to help to provide the best Junior Hockey experience on Vancouver Island but for coming to the arena everyday for the right reasons and with a smile on their faces.

The Campbell River Storm family extends far beyond those that play the game and deep in to the stands. The loud, supporti ve crowd this amazing community provides our boys night in and night out is truly a site for anyone to see. I can’t thank our fans enough for cheering us on to our eight VIJHL ti tle in what was a memory whoever was in the building will never forget. I wouldn’t do our fan base justi ce if I didn’t follow up on that and thank the amazing people who followed us to the Cyclone Taylor Cup in Mission, where every game felt like a home game. Even our game against the hometown Mission saw more Campbell

River faithful. Last but not least I have to touch on the crazy!! people who drove and

fl ew from all over the country to COLD LAKE, ALBERTA! Yes, that’s right. We had several people make the eff ort to travel all the way to Cold Lake to watch is hoist the Vancouver Island’s fi rst Keystone Cup. If that doesn’t sum up the amazing support Campbell River provides us, I don’t know what does.

I look forward with excitement to the new memories we will create together this season!

Over the past two seasons we have worked hard off the

ice to recruit the most talent, respectf ul hockey players all over Briti sh Columbia, Alberta and Ontario to play in Campbell River. These young men all came to Campbell River to be apart of an amazing group and win a championship. With an uptempo, fast, skilled team that will work hard at both ends of the ice, I am sure you won’t be disappointed on any Friday Night Lights at the Brindy!

Thank you for all your support and we look forward to bringing you a successful, exciti ng hockey season!

TAYLOR ROCCABLACK PRESSIt certainly happened in dramatic

fashion, but one way or another, the Campbell River Storm claimed the 2015 Cyclone Taylor Cup with a 6-5 victory over the Kimberley Dyna-miters Monday at the Mission Lei-sure Centre.“It’s surreal. It’s hard to explain.

These kids deserve everything they get,” said Lee Stone, Storm head coach and general manager. “They show up at the rink every day, they’re in the gym four times a week. I’m speechless. These kids are amaz-ing. These kids are going to be a part of my life for the rest of my life. It’s so special. “It’s an electric feeling.”For the Storm, this is the first

Page 4: Special Features - Meet the Storm

Gage and Rhys Colpron, like most boys growing up in Canada, were surrounded by hockey in their early days.

And they sti ll are. They spend a good deal of their ti me these days at Rod Brind’Amour Arena as members of the Campbell River Storm.

There was a den full of hockey paraphernalia in their house growing up – mainly celebrati ng their hometown Kelowna Rockets – and their days were fi lled with the sounds of laughter and pucks sinking into snowbanks around backyard rinks and frozen ponds.

These days, however, hockey is more work and less play. Not that they aren’t enjoying it.

“I spend a lot of ti me here,” Gage says, looking around the rink. “I’m here about 20 hours a week, and rookies are here even more, doing laundry and stuff ,” he laughs, looking at younger brother Rhys, who just smiles. Rhys is the quiet one, but that could be just because he’s not used to this yet. He’s the rookie.

Gage is going into his third and fi nal season with the Storm. He got here when he was Rhys’ age, so he knows what he’s going through. Except Gage didn’t have an older brother to walk him through it.

“He’s got potenti al,” Gage laughs, clapping his younger brother on the shoulder. “He worked really hard over the summer, because he knew this is where he wanted to play.”

Gage was lucky, he says, in that when he joined the team, he didn’t really have to work for it. His brother wasn’t so lucky.

“The team wasn’t as strong back then,” Gage says. “I was basically guaranteed a spot if I wanted it. Rhys wasn’t. He really had to earn it. And he did.”

It’s likely Gage would have made the squad had he wanted to even if it was a stronger team at the ti me.

Head coach Lee Stone told reporters at last year’s Cyclone Taylor Cup tournament that

Gage is “one of the best right-wingers in Junior B hockey. He comes every night for us. He’s a real leader on and off the ice,” so he obviously thinks very highly of the forward.

Which is why he recruited him out of minor hockey in Kelowna and convinced him to come out to the Island and join the Storm.

It’s certainly paid off .

During last year’s championship season, Gage led the team with 84 points – 42 goals and 42 assists – and was a force to be reckoned with when the team had the man advantage, as well, potti ng 12 power-play goals on the season. In the opening four games of this year, he’s already found the back of the net six ti mes and added seven helpers, averaging over three points per game.

So Gage is in his fi nal year with the team, and he’s tearing up the scoreboard. He’s the team’s leader both on and off the ice. He’s been a part of the squad going from the bott om to top of the league. How does he feel about this

year’s team?

“At the beginning of the summer, we had a lot of really skilled forwards,” he says. “And then over the summer, (coach Lee) Stone did such a good job of recruiti ng defencemen. We have eight defencemen that would all probably be top-2 on another team right now. Everything right now is looking really strong.

“My fi rst year, it was a struggle. We had a bunch of new guys. And then last year we had a lot of returning players, which was nice. We defi nitely had more skill than in my fi rst year. And this year, I think we’re even bett er. I haven’t seen a team that has the structure in place and talent on the ice that we already have in September. It’s prett y wild.”

What’s next for the Colpron brothers?

“I’m hoping to play some college hockey somewhere next year,” Gage says. “Either in the States or up here, it doesn’t really matt er. I just want to keep playing the

game. Maybe use hockey to help get a degree.”

He’s planning on going into business, he says. He’s a numbers guy.

Rhys is more about working with his hands. He wants to become a mechanic. He’s got a couple of years of eligibility left in junior hockey, but he knows hockey isn’t his future.

“I’ve already done a year of college,” Rhys says. “I might just play hockey for a year and then get my life started. It kind of depends on how this year goes,” he says honestly.

And with that, the boys are off to get dressed for practi ce. They’ve got to put in a workout before getti ng on the bus for their next road game.

“Stone working you guys hard?” I ask as they take off for the dressing room.

“Always,” they laugh.

But that’s what brings home championships, I suppose.

Good luck, boys – in whatever you go on to do.
