LLBA is proud to provide fund-raising

opportunities at its three annual festivals

for North Shore Neighbourhood

House, The Harvest Project and

John Braithwaite Community Centre.

Finally, it is starting to feel a little more like spring has arrived in Lower Lonsdale. The sky is blue, the temperature is warming and we are preparing to celebrate another Party and Symphony at the Pier. Over the past few years there has been a significant evolution of the Lower Lonsdale Landscape and Community with a growth in development, businesses and residents. And it has not ended with the construction of the Shipyard site and he Times development. The Anevets redevelopment is in full swing and foundation work has begun for the new Versatile building on East Third Street. West First Street is also alive with construction. New development continues because people and businesses at large recognize that Lower Lonsdale is a great place to work and live. It was a vision the City had decades ago. Development began with the Lonsdale Quay. The province encouraged development with the Sea Bus, the BC Rail and ICBC buildings. And we are all benefitting in realizing the wisdom of their long range planning as our community continues to grow and prosper. We at the LLBA are honoured to represent many of the local businesses and community in Lower Lonsdale. We have been privileged to participate in the blossoming growth of our community dating from the Moodyville Business Association. And the City continues to reach out to the LLBA as an advocate for business and residents of Lower Lonsdale. We are regularly consulted regarding a wide range of issues including taxation, policing and parking. We may be a Business Association, but a successful business association is difficult without a strong community behind it. We strive to fulfill our community obligation in part by hosting The Party and Symphony at the Pier, The Christmas Lights and Fall Festivals. Our success at that level is easy to see as more families and people participate in those festivals from year to year. I hope that everyone enjoys our Festivals even more than those of the past, and I wish you all a summer to remember.

Thank you.Bill Curtis V.P. LLBA

WelcomeAs Mayor of the City of North Vancouver, it is my pleasure to invite you to experience our diverse Lower Lonsdale community. With so much to see and do, and the continued enhancement of the City’s waterfront, Lower Lonsdale is quickly becoming an even more sought after area to live and must-see destination for visitors.

Located on the City’s waterfront across from downtown Vancouver, Lower Lonsdale offers a wide variety of commercial and professional services, hotels, restaurants, shopping, art galleries, a performing arts theatre, recreation centre and parks. The area hosts annual community events including Party at the Pier and the Lower Lonsdale Fall Festival, and features popular attractions such as the Lonsdale Quay Public Market, Waterfront Park, Burrard Dry Dock Pier and Shipbuilders’ Square. The expanding North Shore Spirit Trail is a great feature of the City’s diverse waterfront, and is increasingly popular among residents and visitors to our community. The ongoing enhancement of the City’s waterfront continues to contribute to Lower Lonsdale’s reputation as a lively, walkable neighbourhood for all ages.

I hope that the time you spend in Lower Lonsdale gives you the chance to explore the many attractions, take in the breathtaking scenery and experience the warm hospitality of the Lower Lonsdale community.

The meaning behind our motif: In 1996 the Squamish Nation presented Ratcliff & Company with a spectacu-lar wood carving created by internationally renowned artist Xwa-lack-tun (Rick Harry). His three meter-wide sculpture graces our reception area. Respect for all people, regardless of race or religion is a central theme for this work of art which forms the basis for our firm’s motif, shown at top in its colours. We are honoured that Xwa-lack-tun supports our use of his sculpture as our motif.

Wh at it is: A work-live townhouse.

Rent: $2,400 per month

Square feet: About 1,200-sq-ft.

Occupants: Sam Solis, owner of Buy The Bunch Flower Shop (buythebunch.ca, 8-188 E. Esplanade, 604-877-1945) and daughter Megan who just completed the musical theatre program at Capilano U. The main floor of our two-level home was converted into a store specializing in exquisite arrangements and gorgeous bouquets. The quaint little space is beautifully stocked with locally-grown flowers as well as exotic import products from South America and Asia.

Major selling feature: Compact and modern design, floor-to-ceiling windows.

First thing you changed: The light fixtures. Originally, we had pot lights equipped with ceil-ing fans. We changed that to Williamsburg-style chandeliers. These are some of my cool finds on, where else... Craigslist! One of them is a 21-light brass beauty complete with gorgeous details on each of the candle arms and a match-ing gold chain. We added a large and ornate ceiling medallion and voila! — we have a very expensive-looking fixture. Since our living room was transformed into a floral showroom, the chandelier added elegance and tasteful touch to our flower shop.

That one conversation piece: A 19th century Quebec-made country buffet and hutch which I bought 13 years ago on Antique Row on Main Street. It showcases most of my glass vases and collectibles. This piece retains its original light blue milk paint as well as its primitive hardware and is surrounded by an eclectic mix of original artwork and sculptures.

Best part about living in LoLo: Its close proxim-ity to the water and the Quay. It is also walking distance from my favourite coffee shop called Cafe for Contemporary Art, The North Shore Neighborhood House, my bank and the Salvation Army Store. Also it’s heaven for a dog owner like me because of the neat walks along the pier and shipyards.

Compared to our last place... It has no grass for me to mow or hedges to prune and maintain!

Most recent home purchase: I recently bought a cream-coloured Le Corbusier loveseat which has great masculine, contemporary lines and is very, very comfortable. It is a nice way to compli-ment my existing French-style chairs and decor.

Favourite home activity: Re-arranging our furniture and shop display.

The Artisan Farmers Market, a staple of the Saturday morning streetscape at Lonsdale Quay, is back for another season of entertainment, community building and, of course, food sales.

Each Saturday, Artisan Farmers Market hits the sidewalk just steps from Lonsdale Quay, offering a host of delicious B.C. produce. Freshness is key at the market, as the fruit on sale each Saturday morning has been picked only the day before.

In addition to the array of produce available, the Artisan Farmers Market also hosts various sellers of prepared foods — including a wide selection of pesto and tapenades — as well as cheeses and eggs (organic and conventional).

But this isn’t just a place to satisfy the stomach. Bookworms can take a peek at the used book exchange — where folks can trade an old book for one of the ones available or purchase a selec-tion for only $2 — while others can sit with a copy of the newspaper in the reading area.

For those looking for a fashion accessory or two, scarves and a selection of jewelry are also available.

All of the goods and services on hand at the Ar-tisan Farmers Market play a role in the appeal of the Lower Lonsdale staple, but market manager Lyn Hainstock says there’s also a very traditional pull to farmers markets — something that har-kens back to a time long before the supermarket and big-box lifestyle so routine in today’s society.

“People want to go back to their roots, a simple lifestyle. And I think people are interested in their security of their food — where their food comes from,” says Hainstock.

“But you can’t forget the sense of community. We have people coming to the market and danc-ing [there is live entertainment each week]. We’ve had an elderly couple dancing at the market for years now. It’s really nice to see that.”

The Artisan Farmers Market at Lonsdale Quay opens at 10 a.m. and closes at 3 p.m. each Saturday until Oct. 27. A market is also open on Sundays in Ambleside. For more information, visit northshorefarmersmarkets.com.

North Shore Green Market isn’t just a market, it’s an all-inclusive event, says coor-dinator Ingrid Doer. And she’s right. Each Friday at 5 p.m. starting June 15, the North Shore Green Market takes over the former shipyards area on the Lower Lonsdale waterfront for five hours of food, clothing, jewelry and produce sales.

Some of the food available at this year’s market: organic beef, lamb and turkey, handmade chocolates and assorted candies. Food trucks are also on site serving a plethora of hot dishes.

“It’s a really cool thing. We have different ven-dors from different areas. We have a guy who comes all the way from Pemberton with amazing flowers. There’s really unique people involved,” says Doer.

“But everything is from B.C. We don’t allow any imported stuff.”

The goal of the Friday night markets, adds Doer, is to be a place to come and hang out, a place to spend some time checking out all the things on offer. To that end, Doer says organizers are hoping to add a selection of board games for visitors to play as well as adding a licensed area for those hop-ing to grab a drink.

Last year, the Friday night market had between 3,000-5,000 visitors per night. Each market also features five hours of live

music spanning a range of genres from reggae to blues.

The former shipyards site is located at the foot of Lonsdale Avenue, in front of the Pinnacle Hotel. The North Shore Green Market also oper-ates markets on Wednesdays in the city hall plaza, Thursdays in Lynn Valley and Saturdays at Maplewood Farm.

For more information on the North Shore Green Markets, including recycling and com-posting initiatives available, visit canamade.com.

Beyond business: Bikes for Tykes

Appropriately built into the seaward lean of Lonsdale Avenue, the CityScape Art Space considers itself at a tilt to Vancouver’s more commercial art houses.

“We’re not a gallery; we’re an art space,” says exhibition coordinator Jo Dunlop. “We make it inclusive, non-threatening and open to all. We never do solo shows.”

Run by the North Vancouver Community Arts Council, CityScape brands itself a “social profit” art space, where all the monies raised by exhibitions, programs, sales and rent-als, go right back into supporting North Van artists.

One of its most popular programs — and, at 30 years running, certainly its most endur-ing — is its art rentals department. For a minimum borrowing period of one month, patrons can take home artworks from City-Scape’s ever-evolving 300-piece collection.

“Often people will fall in love the work and end up buying it,” Dunlop says.

And it’s not just people renting pieces for their own homes, she added. The rental program is wildly popular with corporate offices and local businesses which enjoy a rotation of new art in the workplace, as well as realtors who borrow pieces to spruce up the interiors of on-the-market homes and condos.

At CityScape, one can also find how-to classes for all ages and, of course, renowned exhibitions.

On now until June 16 in the exhibition space is Studio: The Abstract Experience, featur-ing the works of 14 abstract painters. From June 22 to July 14 is slippage: the difference between the expected and the actual, a dynamic and contemplative exhibit in which three artists (Sean Mills, Christopher Don-

nelly and Merrell Gerber) play with space, truth and illusion in paintings, sculptures and installations. Opening reception is June 21 from 7-9 p.m. The Art of Typography runs from July 20 to Sept. 1, celebrating the aes-thetics of the printed word and calligraphy. The exhibit showcases posters from seven editions of the global Annual Typography Posters Exhibition. This show highlights the work of 30 different Iranian graphic design-ers, with an opening reception on July 19 from 7-9 p.m.

TAKE 5Lower Lonsdale: what do locals really think?

It doesn’t matter if you’re a tourist from Colombia, a day-tripper from downtown or a longtime local — there’s always something exciting to check out in Lower Lonsdale, especially now as the weather heats up. With that in mind, we caught up with five random people on a recent sunny afternoon and asked them what they liked best about Lower Lonsdale.

What sets LoLo apart, says Ulla Svenhard, is the neighbourhood’s unique mix of fast pace and familiarity.

“It’s much different than just going to a res-taurant or something,” she says. “You just see different people out here.”

On a sunny day, you can find her out on the Quay or in the market. With a daughter in West Vancouver, the two like to meet there for cof-fee, lunch or dinner.

“It’s just the best place to enjoy the weather,” Ulla says. “It’s not like anywhere else.”

Dong Khong, new to the ‘hood and biking to the beat.

Dong Khong is pretty new to the LoLo neighbourhood, having just taken a job at a local breakfast hotspot about a month ago. He still lives in Vancouver — something that may soon change, he says — so commuting and bicycle accessibility are important to him.

“So far it seems very bike friendly,” he says, locking up his road bike at one of the many racks on Lonsdale.

Khong’s a student at Douglas College and wants to eventually get into nurs-ing. But for now, he’s just enjoying the ride and discovering all that Lower Lonsdale has to offer.

“It’s really, really nice up here.”

She enjoys all the interesting and inde-pendent shops and cafes on Lonsdale. And now with a daughter of her own, there’s no place she’d rather be to raise a family.

“It’s a real urban community feeling here. Everyone knows each other and that’s pretty rare,” she says, playing with her daughter in the shade outside a Lonsdale and First Street coffee shop.

Her favourite spot in LoLo? That’s easy. “Lonsdale Quay. Especially at sunset.”

“It’s absolutely spectacular here — the food, the people and the views are all amazing,” he says.

The Colombian school teacher is here on official business checking out Capilano University but he’s spending much of his time exploring the waterfront and taking photos with his friend and colleague Omar Giraldo.

The two sampled freshly caught fish at the market and were impressed to say the least.

Avril Westby has lived in Lower Lonsdale for 22 years because of the convenience it affords seniors like her.

Q. What’s great about being a bartender at Fishworks?

A. It’s never boring! Each night offers something different. I get to meet new people all the time!

Q. What defines a good bartender?

A. A good bartender has to have passion for the drinks he makes. That passion shows. A good drink is like a work of art to me.

Q. Do you have a most-memorable customer you can tell us about?

A. The one guy who mistakenly poured the other guy’s wine into his own glass! Our guests are close, but not that close!

Q. When you go out, what do you like to drink?

A. Grey Goose martini, lightly stirred, no olive, no twist, nothing! It’s all about the vodka and the drink I like looks as clear as glass.

Q. If we pressed play on your iPod, what would we hear?

A. Anything by Jay Cabrales.

Q. What would you like to be doing if you weren’t bartending?

A. Hiking the Grouse Grind

Q. What’s great about being a bartender at the District?

A. Recently we’ve built a snug little lounge in the back of the restaurant. It’s the perfect place to have a drink and escape. I love the interaction with our regulars and meeting new customers that have just discovered us. Creating my own craft cocktail list has been such a fantastic experience and I love hav-ing an outlet to try new concoctions.

Q. What defines a good bartender?

A. A good bartender is a good judge of character.

Q. When you go out, what do you like to drink?

A. Totally depends. A boozy cocktail if I’m out just for drinks. A great wine if I’m out for dinner. Cognac, warmed, is really my drink of choice though.

Q. If we pressed play on your iPod, what would we hear?

A. Either Adele’s album “21” or Drake’s most recent album “Take Care”

Q. What would you like to be doing if you weren’t bartending?

A. I would love to be a winemaker… but don’t know how I would do as a farmer since I don’t even like camping.

Q. What’s great about being a bartender at The Lobby Restaurant and Lounge?

A. I love the diversity of guests: locals, business men and women, honeymooners, and world travelers; all varying in age, life stories, and of course drink prefer-ence! Our restaurant and lounge is a bright and styl-ish and our team is a close-knit group. This makes The Lobby a home away from home for me and for everyone that comes through our doors.

Q. What defines a good bartender?

A. You need to make a positive impact on your cus-tomers’ day, sharing genuine conversation, becoming an acquaintance and confidant. You must entertain while working at a furious pace — with a smile.

Q. Do you have a most-memorable customer you can tell us about?

A. Yes! Ray, this man loved his martinis. They had to be executed to perfection. His dedication was famil-iar to me (I love vodka martinis) and we bonded! He would come in for a drink, tell me stories and bring me sweet treats, it was delightful!

Q. What would you like to be doing if you weren’t bartending?

A. I like to think my alter ego would have taken me to Hollywood. I love to entertain.

Carmen VazquezQ. What’s great about being a bartender at

Anatoli’s? A. It’s a fun, laid back atmosphere with great food and a good staff. Just the right mixture of casual and fine dining.

Q. What defines a good bartender? A. Easy going, with a strong personality and the ability to entertain while still being efficient with the floor staff.

Q. Do you have a most-memorable customer you can tell us about?

A. There’s so many! And there’s so many that I love seeing when they walk in, especially, here.

Q. When you go out what do you like to drink? A. A classic gin martini.

Q. If we pressed play on your iPod, what would we hear?

A. Metallica or John Mayer

Q. What would you like to be doing if you weren’t bartending?

A. Studying astronomy or philosophy. Or hiking.

The public art on display in Lower Lonsdale pays homage to the neighbourhood’s rich past and dynamic future. In all, the City of North Vancouver has 60-some public art pieces, so don’t forget to get out and appreci-ate the outdoor art that helps define our community. Clockwise from top right:

Title: Viewpoint Stairway Artist: Bill Pechet & Stephanie RobbLocation: The Pier A metal staircase, reminiscent of ship-building materials is fitted with binoculars to serve as a viewing platform to Burrard Inlet, the working port, and downtown Vancouver.

Title: Squamish Nation Story Project Artist: Siyamin Artist Cooperative Location: Spirit Trail Funded by the Squamish Nation and the City of North Vancouver’s Community Public Art Program, the Squamish Nation Story project is a way to creatively share the Squamish Nation’s traditional story legends and culture. This Community Public Art Project is integrated into the benches along the Spirit Trail.

Title: NSNH Entrance Artist: Elizabeth Kozlowski Location: North Shore Neighbourhood HouseThe front entrance of the NSNH has been

transformed into a colourful artwork with windows that reflect the diversity and vitality of the people found within.

Title: Joe Bustemente Trumpet Artist: Richard WojcienchowskiLocation: The PierIn 1900, Joe Bustemente, a one-armed Chilean mariner was retained to blow his trumpet to direct ferries through fog or darkness to the North Vancouver wharf.Hint: press the red button!

Title: Harubang Artist: Unknown Location: Waterfront Park This traditional Korean sculpture derived from native shamanism serves as a guardian and boundary marker. It was a gift to promote understanding and friendship between the Port of Vancouver and the Port of Inchon, Korea.
