editorialDear Cadillac enthusiasts ofEurope,

Driving a Cadillac - regardlessof its production year - doesnot only mean you are using asophisticated automobile or adevice allowing you to movefrom point A to point B. Dri-ving a Cadillac is more: Thiskind of car is able to changeyour attitude, your mind andalso your daily life. Drive a Ca-dillac and you will enjoy awealthy, more profound andritzy world.

What`s the secret behind this experience? Surely, the de-sign. Also the advanced features which mainly represent adecennial competitive edge over the most prominent ri-vals. But there is no limitation to certain details. A Cadillacbreathes history. Automotive history, but also the cons-ciousness of the roots of American history. Since the dayswhen Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac founded Strait City,Ville dEtroit, the birth region of Cadillac in MichiganState has become a landmark of pioneering, engineeringand the struggle of mankind to allow everyone to realizehis dreams. Driving a Cadillac does always mean to re-mind this heritage of proud attainments mankind hasachieved over the centuries.

This is the merging point of Cadillac and France. Its nocoincidence that Cadillac founder Henry M. Leland refer-red to the French roots of Americas Motor City. Its a com-mitment to these values of freedom and success which werethe basis of the French Declaration de lHomme e du Ci-toyen of 26th of August, 1789.

Therefore, its more than a symbol that now, nearly exact-ly 221 years later, we gather in France to celebrate thethird Grand European, supported by CLC USA, thus gi-ving a visible sign of how the Cadillac idea has grown andbecome a remarkable landmark for friendship betweenpeople and nations all over the world.

We would like to support this splendid event dedicating aspecial edition issue of our German CCCD club magazineTHE STANDARD to all our friends giving lively impres-sions of Cadillac in Europe and contributing to a celebrati-on which does not only represent a car meeting but alsoreflects this common understanding of Cadillac fellows onboth banks of Atlantic sea as a community sharing thesame roots, the same preferences and the same passion.

Best regards and enjoy the time in Richelieu!

In the year 2000 the Loire valley and the surrounding area Richelieuincluded was listed a World Heritage site by the UNESCO. Their inspec-tors were particularly impressed by the integration of architecture andlandscape for over two thousand years.

During your stay with us we will be showing you some of these wondersof the past. How fortunate we are to be able to visit them in that wonder ofour age: the Cadillac!

The arrangement of events is a bit different from an American CLC event. As many of youknow, we are a new affiliate of the Club just two years old and do not yet have themanpower to manage the sort of multiple choices the CLC usually offers.

Our wish to please you is as great as anyones in the CLC and we are delighted and honou-red to host what will be the biggest Cadillac event France has ever seen; but we have to doit our way. We hope you will enjoy the programme the way it is and think of it as yetanother example of that famous French alternative.

European FriendshipMaking this „European“ issue I planned to edit the magazine bi-lingual both in English and in French. Due to my Frenchbeing far from perfect, I contacted James Ayres for French conversion. He accepted without hesitating, and his Frenchtext shows an utmost refinement not only transferring the wording but keeping the style and sense of English textperfectly. Thank you, James, for this absolutely perfect job!

This experience resembled the collection of information of all the European affiliates data for displaying their club: I gotinto contact with the respective fellows as if we had known each other for years, and so for me the experience offriendship has started long before heading for Richelieu. I will be glad to meet these friends at the beginning of September, and I‘m sure that for all participants these days will allow similar encounters.

The founding of CFN came up as a need for severalCadillac enthusiasts that wanted an active Cadillacclub in the middle of Norway. A club with a clubmagazine, home page, and several Cadillac meetingsspread around in Norway on an annual basis.

The club was founded in October 29. 2005. atNorlandia Dovrefjell Hotell. (middle of Norway). Many issues about what the club should do for themembers were listed as well as how the club shouldbe run.

The first executive committee was elected and it wasdecided to arrange two Cadillac car meets held on anannual basis every year. Locations for these meetingsare shifted from place to place every year to covermost of the country. It was decided to locate the clubin Trondheim. Trondheim is Norways third largestcity and is located in the middle of Norway. (500kmfrom the other CLC affiliated club who is located inOslo). The American car club of Norway (Amcar) isalso situated in Trondheim. Amcar was founded in1975 as an organizing body for car clubs andindividuals with an interest in American cars andtrucks.

As of today, the organization has grown to includemore than 80 clubs and in excess of 16.000 members

nationwide. Amcar has a professional staff of tenpeople that assist the members in all mattersconcerning American automobiles. www.amcar.no

Cadillac Friends Norway is a member of Amcar.Cadillac Friends Norway has 5 year anniversary in2010. The membership in the club increased rapidlythe first year from just a few members to more than50 members.Today the club have more than 200members and membership is increasing.

France: 1967/68 Cadillac EldoradoFrance: 1967/68 Cadillac EldoradoFrance: 1967/68 Cadillac EldoradoFrance: 1967/68 Cadillac EldoradoFrance: 1967/68 Cadillac Eldorado

Considering that several Cadillacs were dubbed withFrench names, you may think a Cadillac deVille or evenCalais should reflect France in a particular manner. Butasking our French fellows for the Cadillac of France JamesAyres referred to the 1967/8 Cadillac Eldorado.

This may be a surprising choice but if you look atengineering layout, this choice seems to be obvious.Remember that this Eldorado - following its siblingOldsmobile Toronado sharing the basic technical features- was one of the first U.S. luxury cars using front-wheeldrive. And here is the link to France because it was Citroënwhich in 1934 started to establish front wheel drive withits famous Traction Avant and continued to keep thislayout until today, with an insurmountable summit in 1955when the Traction Avant was replaced by the DSrepresenting the godess of the streets of Europe.

But - insofar comparable to the Deesse - also the 1967Eldorado represents a milestone in automotive designreplacing the famous Dagmar bumpers and tailfins bycrisp, razor-sharp edges oriented towards European stylingbut also displaying the future of the whole industry. ThisEldorado appealed both to Europeans and Americancustomers, but in particular to the famous French taste ofstyling.

Image this Eldorado parked in front of the Grande Archin Paris La Defense city of 21st century, or in front ofCentre Pompidou, or beneath the Bibliotheque de France.Surprising how architectural masterpieces displaying thefuture of giving form to an object combine with the 1967Cadillac Eldorado to a symphony of glorious, timeless grace.Heading down with a 1967 Eldorado from La Defensepassing the most famous street of all cities in the world for7 kilometres reflecting French history - Avenue CharlesdeGaulle, Avenue de la Grande Armee, Etoile, Avenue deChamps-Elysees, Place de la Concorde - makes you feel thevalue of timeless style and you experience how 1967Eldorado self-evident becomes part both of history andfuture, and if there would be a Cadillac showroom atChamps-Elysees displaying this car today, Im sure youwould buy it instantly...

Cadillac and Italy seem to be as distant as Earth to Mars astraditional Italian cars have to pass medieval alleys andtherefore should not exceed an external length of 3 metresto avoid continuous contact between body and stonework. Therefore Italian luxury cars are prominently sports carswhich have to be compact as they would loose performanceif too huge.

But, surprisingly, there have always been links betweenCadillac and Italy, and this cooperation led to some of thefinest automotive results ever. 1959 Eldorado Broughamwas pre-assembled in Italy and then flewn to Detroit forfinal processing. Giorgio Giugiaro with his firm Ital Designwas engaged to develop the superior interior design for1990 Fleetwood Sixty Special with its American walnutwood inlays and particular leather applicated seats. Evenin the 21st century, Cadillac co-operated with Bvlgari torefine dash design adding some extra luxury touch toDetroit iron. Aside of GMs activities, there wereaftermarket solutions such as Gucci packages delivered byFlorida Cadillac Dealer Braman, Miami, where Guccidesigned vinyl tops, leather inserts and a matching Guccisuitcase set made the Cadillac even more refined than thebase version.

Therefore, we chose Allantè as Italian Cadillac becausethis car resembles advanced production and noble-mindedresults pairing superb GM technology with superb Italianhandcrafting. Each Allantè was assembled in the Ital Designplant in Torino, Italy, and sent to Detroit by specificallyequipped freight Boeing 747 for completing assembly.

Design of Allantè shows decisive European style as it iscrisp, compact and sporty. Taillights add a luxury touchbecause the red reflectors are embedded in a chrome patternshining like jewelry. Thus Allantè puts some additionalshine on its appearance. Just the right car for cruising openair down the street over the cliffs of Sorrento peninsula toAmalfi, merging the most beautiful coast worldwide withthe ultimate convertible. Or the trip back to Rome, enjoyingthe powerful super-silent V8 on the Italian Autostradadel Sole, approaching Rome downtown passing world-famous architecture by Bernini and Bramante whilesmelling the spicy fragrance of cypresses and pines flowingin the tastefully designed interior area...

You may ask whywe are displayingan Austrian Ca-dillac as there is nolocal Cadillac Clubthere. Austrian fel-lows choose eithera CLC member-ship or they jointhe German Clas-sic Cadillac Club(CCCD). However, there is one parti-cular argument:Every year at theend of August, itsjust Austria whe-re Cadillac enthu-siasts of up to 14European coun-tries gather at theCadillac Bigmeetin Kremsmünster near Salzburg. Its the highlight of Euro-pean cruising summer, and in 2009 there were 140 Cadil-lacs in a clearly above average condition to attend.

The man behind this story of success is CLC and CCCDmember Georg Pfeiffer, organizing this Bigmeet perfect-ly and owner of two 1959 and 1961 Eldorado Biarritz Con-vertibles which appear as if they had left assembly lineonly five minutes ago. Therefore we have to assign Eldora-do Biarritz to Austria. This choice also matches this coun-try having a fine tradition of noble, tasteful and liberal-minded style deriving from the past where Austria in thetime of Habsburg emperors melted a vast number of mind-sets giving either Salzburg or Vienna or other Austrianlocations as Bregenz or Badgastein an international flair.

This allows to refer to the Biarritz theme which in terms ofCadillac means that even the summit luxury car of theworld can be further enhanced: In a Biarritz you will notonly find any imaginable luxury but also any unimagi-nable and incredible equipment. Its no coincidence thatthis exceptional car was dubbed Biarritz because a seasideresort like this place in French Atlantic coast with its dis-tinctive fin de siecle- styled elegance and grace deliversthe perfect stage for cars of this kind. Thus, Austria andFrance find a common denominator in this marvellous car.

Austrian roads allow every Cadillac to deliver the ut-most driving pleasure. The contrast of lakes mirroringthe adjoining mountains and pictoresque villages oftencomplemented by huge monasteries overlooking fertileterritories delivering excellent wines and food. There isnearly no experience more superb than to enjoy thesepanoramic views and at the same moment smelling theflavor of cozy forests - Austria, a country created for Ca-dillacs.

On a, donc, assignélEldorado Biarritz à lAutriche.

German motor journalists prefer the word premium forcars leaving German assembly lines. They equate this termwith qualities of sport, power, roadholding and stone-agedsuspensions which make such premium cars inusablefor everyday use if you shouldnt be randomly a racingdriver. Difficult to find a Cadillac resembling these qualitiesof the racetrack or the German Autobahn.

But there is one match. XLR, rolling off the Corvette plantin Bowling Green, Kentucky, combines Germanroadholding with Cadillac splendor allowing Mercedesdrivers to replace their SL S-class roadster with an XLR.XLR also does reflect a new era of automotive design beingthe first Cadillac displacing the art&science stylingwhich replaced soft curves by crisp, razor-edge profiles.Difficult for Cadillac enthusiasts appraising sweeping, classic lines along tall cars pampered with chrome accents. But imagine how customers of the fities may haveexperienced the ever-growing tailfins of Cadillacs of thisera. Sometimes design revolutions need time for beingunderstood. And therefore, XLR reflects German values ofan understated shape packed entirely by advancedtechnical features as colored head-up display, road sensingcomputer-controlled suspension and a fully retractablehardtop which is vanishing without leaving a trace becauseeven the boot covers are integrated in the design. And evenperformance outclasses most German sports cars: Pushingthe legendary NorthStar powertrain does allow to leavebehind nearly all German cars which are diminuished tosmall colored spots in the rearview mirror after someseconds when NorthStar demonstrated insurmountablepower.

Thus, XLR does allow to set record laps at the northernloop of Nürburgring, Germans finest and most traditionalreactrack, but after crossing the finish line, XLR changesback to best Cadillac luxury coasting down the road onvelvety cat paws without any noise of the powertrain evenwith top down. Comparing XLR to any competitor untiltoday makes you feel the Cadillac difference. XLR is definingpremium class in every respect demonstrating that U.S.engineering was never matched by Germanmanufacturers.

NorwNorwNorwNorwNorwaaaaay: Cadillac Sedan deVy: Cadillac Sedan deVy: Cadillac Sedan deVy: Cadillac Sedan deVy: Cadillac Sedan deVilleilleilleilleilleNorway isknown as oneof the mostb e a u t i f u lcountries ofEurope due toits symphonyof rockslooming overd a r k - g r e e nf j o r d s .Norway alsois a country ofluxury as oilp r o d u c t i o ng e n e r a t e sbenefits for allits inha-bitants.

But there ismore. Youwill feel this driving on Norwegian routes detecting thatspeed limit is set to 90 km/h, thus surpassing the famous55mph barrier by only two km/h. A rich country, relaxeddriving, splendid nature - born for Cadillac driving!

Therefore we elected Sedan deVille as NorwegianCadillac. DeVille is probably the most genuine Cadillacever. It originally was only a nameplate on a Series 62when launched in 1949 but subsequently developed furtherand further becoming an independent series from 1965 upand making its way from the base Cadillac when 1977 theCalais was dropped up to the top series when 1996 theFleetwood disappeared and left the new DeVille Concoursas best sedan in the world. Until today, deVille - even underits terrific DTS letter code which stands for DeVilleTouring Sedan - remains top of the luxury car world withits world-class NorthStar divetrain smoother than any 12-cylinder engine of competitors, its computer controlledsuspension and steering which senses road conditionscontinuously and allows adjustments in a hundreth ofseconds and an insurmountable computer-adjustedseating which allows to travel for thousands of kilometresin a cosseted, plush and silent atmosphere without anydanger of fatigue.

Thus, DeVille is your perfect car to cruise down E6 highwayat 55 mph from Oslo to North Cape experiencing how anendless film of beautiful views passes by the windows ofthe car, never hearing any sound of engine or tires andwatching the midnight sun glaring over the soundsbetween European continent and Lofoten Islands. Drivingin Norway is the same as living in Norway: relaxed, cosseted, wrapped in famous nature and encounteringfriendly people so that even children may travel in safetywithout having to be accompanied. A perfect country anda perfect car: Norway and Cadillac deVille.

Belgium as domicile of EU authorities is the hot spot of powerin Europe. All European states keep a residence there, makingBrussels the European capital. Looking for a Cadillacrepresenting this sphere of power does require a car providingnecessary space for working or discreet negotiation anddemonstrating the outer world that passengers areempowered to decide about the fate of a whole continent.

There is no other car in the world matching theserequirements better than the Cadillac Fleetwood Seventy-Five. Plenty of room, a discerning interior window isolatingdriving staff from executives ruling Europe, and animpressive, bold body demonstrating elegance and strengthto people who may never be capable to enter such a limousine.

Cadillac tradition of Fleetwood Seventy-Five stretches backto the Forties, offering the unique availabilty of a stretchedsedan without having to engage aftermarket coachbuildersthus maintaining original Cadillac quality to executive cus-tomers. Nearly any version of the Fleetwood Seventy-Fiveprovides footrests which may be unfolded to two additionalrear seats allowing security staff to travel inside the car. Cos-seted traveling while continuing to make important decisi-ons in economy or politics allows the Cadillac to serve as aninstrument of executive power thus symbolizing howBrussels stands for European government issues. Particu-larly parking in front of the Atomium, Brussels monumentshowing an oversized model of a nucleus, the Fleetwood Se-venty-Five of the Sixties demonstrates an uncompromisedview of the world and people trusting in an endless prospe-rity of technological advancement.

Iceland does deliver someof the most beautiful roadsin Europe. The clear nordicsky over the rocks whereyou can experience fireand water whenwatching vulcanism orwaterfalls displayingactive nature as if youwere in a huge, alwaysplaying theatre where thelandscape serves as astage. On the other hand, force of nature sometimesrequires you to pass someflooded way withoutremaining stuck untilwater will have gone. Youalso have to look forcomfort in the long arcticwinter when you try toescape darkness in a cosyinterior room.

Sure, during midsummerdays any Cadillac mayallow you to explore andexperience this wonderfulcountry, but if you choosethe Cadillac pleasing youfor the entire year, there is no alternative to an Escalade. You feel the power needed to defeat any kind of weathercondition enabling you to escape with powerful torqueand all-wheel-drive when the reliable V8 built byChevrolet and the traction system which enables Blazers,Yukons and Sierras for decades now make available half acentury of engineering experience.

However, Escalade does combine these qualities with theextra touch of luxury, poviding a noiseless ride as if youwould cruise down Skyline Drive in Shenandoah NationalPark - a Cadillac transforms any route in the world to adriving dream so that smoothness of movement andsplendor of Iceland sceneries melt to an unforgettableexperience of automotive joy.

Even when stopping for a beautiful view, the outside ofEscalade reflects this touch of reliability: Big and boldemblems give the impression that this car is rock-solideven under worst conditions and set glaring accentscombining wonderfully with deep-blue nordic sky. So,even a country which at first look seems not to have toomany links with our favourite automotive brand but isfurnished with an own Cadillac Club can be fittedadequately with products by Cadillac, putting the levelof pleasure you have anyway in Iceland to levels whichseem to be untrue.

Spanish dubbing for cars was fairly usual in U.S. automotiveindustry. Chrysler Cordoba, Ford Granada, Cadillac Seville,Mercury Monterey, GMC Sierra - manufacturers favouredSpanish names for their products particularly in theSeventies. They all are successors of Cadillacs Eldoradoappearing with this name in 1953. Eldorado does meanThe Golden and was used by Spanish conquerors whencolonizing Mexico and South America believing there hadto be a faboulous country where all objects were made ofGold, thus symbolizing everyones dream for theinachievable. An Eldorado Convertible in any of its variousversions over decades was always the most ultimate pieceof luxury you could drive, and even today there is no othercar in the world getting this attention even from peoplewho dontcare about cars: Experiencing an EldoradoConvertible, really everyone feels instantly this is themillenium, million-dollar car and an all-time high.

We choose Eldorado Convertible as Spanish car becausethe struggle for gold as an unachievable dream does notonly characterize the conquest of America but also the historicimportance of Spain: the culture imported by Muslim religionmaking Cordoba a city with lighted streets at night andpublic street cleaning in the 7th century (!) and preservingthe treasures of antique literature, the reconquistaestablishing Spain kingdom as prominent example of tightgovernment giving the input to discover America thuschanging the world like Eldordado Convertible changed theluxury car market when it appeared.

Its also inevitable to cruise through Spain in a Convertible:The wide plains surrounding Madrid, where you can smellthe heat of Spanish summer, the pittoresque windmills ofLa Mancha, the view of the red facades of Alhambra inGranada, one of the worlds most impressive palaces, or thefancy Giralda tower in Sevillas pulsing street life. Eldo-rado Convertible driving does open your mind to enjoydifferent cultures, different eras of history and fascinatingviews as the worlds biggest palm forest in Elche near Medi-terranean Sea. Driving an Eldorado Convertible throughSpanish history means a tale of thousand and one nightsmaking you feel you found the Golden Country - at thesteering wheel of this absolutely ultimate car...

Looking for a Cadillac appropriate to represent GreatBritain nearly automatically leads to the Cadillac Sevillebecause in Europe Cadillac had only one real rival: Rolls-Royce (but only until they lost all of their spirit using BMWparts) built cars being able to match Cadillac in comfort, quietness and image. Therefore in the Seventies Cadillachad to develop a car that could avoid customers to try aRolls instead of a Fleetwood or DeVille looking for betterroadholding capacities. This was the hour of birth forSeville. Crisp, European styling with rectangular roofline, big tires in a compact body, powerful 5.7-litre enginemanufactured by Oldsmobile and only 5,20 metres of lengthmaking Seville the smallest Cadillac but also the mostexpensive. The story of the first modern Seville immediatelywas a story of success, and Cadillac really succeeded incapturing Rolls-Royce buyers, but did not look reallyBritish.

The successor scheduled for 1980 was based upon aninspiration of Bill Mitchell, Cadillac design executive, whenlooking out of his hotel suite down to the streets of Londonwhile his wife went shopping in Bond street. One of themost prominent executive cars, the Daimler DS 420, stillcarried the Hooper-Daimler-bustletrunk. Cadillacdecided to adopt this shaping for the new Seville andcreated the first real retro car of the industry. This designcombined best British tradition with most advancedfeatures (as e.g., the variable displacement V8-6-4 enginein 1981) allowing to travel in distinctive style whileenjoying the Seville as quietest car worldwide. This Sevillewas copied by rivals about 20 years later, as BMW-Rolls-Royce where even today the Phantom seems to be atasteless copy of Seville trying to imitate interior design, pinstriping or chrome trim on the hood. And othercompetitors, like Mercedes CLS or VW Passat CC, copiedthe frameless doors Seville introduced 1980.

Thus, Seville represents British style at its best anddemonstrates that progress sometimes does not require astep forward but may be better achievable by preservingand carefully developing traditional values - back to theroots of history.

Brief History: The Cadillac Owners Club of Great Britainwas formed in July 1991 with Julian Lodge as chairman. Thefirst newsletter appeared at the end of 1991 and the firstCadillac gathering was held in 1992, at which more than twohundred Cadillacs turned out from all over the country. Overthe next few years the club grew steadily, with regularmonthly meetings held in Leicester and Epping and an annual‘Cadillac Spectacular’ held at various central locations.

In 1994, Bob Thomas took over as Chairman, and during1996, Rob Maidment joined as International Liaison, withthe club eventually affiliating to the Cadillac LaSalle Club ofAmerica. Rob then took over editing the magazine and twoyears later started the COCGB website, both of which hecontinues to do.

In 1998, Peter Griffith was elected Chairman, and remainsin the role to his day. The 2003 ‘Grand International’ and there-enactment of the 1903 RAC 1,000-mile Endurance Runwas staged by the club at Crystal Palace, London, at whichSir Stirling Moss generously officiated. Stirling did this inlieu of having driven the 1903 ‘Bennett’ Cadillac 50 yearsearlier with Fred Bennett, the man responsible for Cadillac’sdouble winning of the Dewar Trophy. Julian Bennett, FredBennett’s grandson, successfully completed the 2003 Run,featuring in numerous magazines and newspapers and threetimes on BBC Television.

In 2007, Paul Moss became the present Show Organiser, concentrating on smaller but more intrinsically interestingClub get-togethers. On the sudden death of Ray Giles in2009, Bob Thomas took over as Treasurer while continuingas Membership Secretary. At the 2010 Annual GeneralMeeting, Rod Bevan volunteered for Membership Secretary, thereby bringing the Committee back up to strength.

There is no other car namein the world which is asself-explaining asFleetwood. Originallyonly the brand of a bodymanufacturer later ontaken over by GM, thisname does only define onething: This car has to be theflagship of Cadillac asworlds most importantluxury brand. Buy aFleetwood of any modelyear and you know therewas never a competitorable to match this superbblend of distinction, class, glamour and leadership inengineering and styling.

Therefore we are proud topresent Fleetwood asSwitzerland Cadillac.Being the county wherebig money from all overthe world is funded by therich and beautiful people, inevitably Swiss banking isknown for its discreet, respectable service. Aperfect surounding forluxury cars of both bankersand customers. Therefore, traditionally Switzerland is Europes country whereCadillacs are endemic, and among them, Fleetwood doesrepresent in the best possible manner top-of-the-worldqualities which are typically for Switzerland: competence, consistent and decent luxury, and last but not leastlongevity, sophistication and perfect function ashandcrafted Swiss watches.

Driving in Switzerland does also reveal a perfect interactionbetween nature and car: Climbing uphills you enjoyphantastic mountain scenery without any disturbing noisebecause Fleetwoods engine with its low-end torque allowsto ascend with idle speed where even an S-Class Benz or aBMW 7 with 12-cylinder-engine produce a burping noisebecause they need high rpm to climb. If temperature shoulddecrease because you reached the top of big St. Bernhardcol at 2.469 metres, Fleetwood does not require any actionbecause climate control does maintain perfectly thetemperature you adjusted the day you purchased the carand never changed it because the car does this job perfectly.

Looking for summit automotive experience in Europe, thereis no better recommendation than to combine Alpinescenery of Switzerland with unsurmountable flair ofFleetwood: A proud, gleaming, confident life.

Scandinavia - the real European paradise for U.S. car en-thusiasts. No other country outside America offers a com-parable number of U.S. classics on the streets. Arriving inSweden for the first time, you believe to be the victim of atime shift: Leaving your Cadillac, a 1963 Buick Electra 225slowly coasts down. At the shopping mall beneath yourcar there is a pastel blue 1955 Olds Delta 88 Wagon. Andlater, in the center of the small town, you can see a yellow1959 Coupe deVille in the parking lot. And if you shouldattend a little car meeting - not the famous Västeras orRättvik meetings where you may notice over 10.000 (!) U.S.cars - you will be stunned endlessly: DeSoto Adventurer,Mercury Monterey, Hudson Hornet, Pontiac Chieftain andtwo Pontiac Catalina Station Wagons, all of the Fitfites andall in perfect condition, better than museum quality!

Swedens winter days with at the most only some two orthree hours of sun allow you to carry out car works for thewhole winter, and when midsummer days arrive, you canenjoy sunshine nearly all day long on the polished surfaceof paint. So there is one clear choice for the Cadillac of Swe-den: The Cadillac Brougham. Because the Brougham maybe the most authentic Cadillac ever with a form definingfor all times how a Cadillac has to appear: Bold, straight, formal but ritzy. Its also the heartbeat of Cadillac: the lastCadillac assembled in the Clark Avenue plant, maybe thelast Cadillac having its own soul. The 5-litre Iron Dukein the engine bay delivered by Oldsmobile, one of the bestengines ever built, silky, low fuel consumption, endlesstorque for a million trouble-free miles, alluding to the loveof Swedens fellows for all U.S. manufacturers.

Scandinavian motorways are particularly designed forcruising - cross the border, set cruise control to 55 milesand drive for a whole day, take the time to look at theother road cruisers and the mellifluous Swedish panora-ma: flowered meadows, Falun-red wooden houses, charming harbours, impressive rock drawings from theBronze Age, and at last the Cadillac Brougham parked atthe shoreline between the famous red cliffs of Swedishwest coast, gleaming in the intensely orange shine of themidsummer sun - a car that was created for this coun-try...

The Netherlands have a great tradition of seafaring. Thatmakes you feel even today that Dutch people arecosmopolitans. Best prerequisites for driving a Cadillac.Appealing to seafaring, we elected Cadillac Calais as theCadillac for Netherlands as it is the only one whichborrowed its name from a harbour city. Cadillac Calaiswas manufactured from 1964 to 1976 and a fullsize model, thus representing the classic landyacht, adding someadditional elegance through the Calais-exclusive thirdwindow located in the sail panel.

Just the right car to sail around Dutch canals and inlandseas setting cruise control in a flat country without anyhills. As you do not notice road noise due to Cadillac soundisolation, you may really believe to sail there with the quietengine delivering power comparable to wind breezes. Stopnear pictoresque windmills or white painted drawbridgesand you may only have the one desire that someone skilledmay ask your permission to paint this scenery includingthe Cadillac Calais with its dim color from the Sixties orearly Seventies. The Netherlands are famous for theirartists who created paintings showing an incrediblesophistication in illustrating the flow of light over surfacesof objects. There would be no finer imagination as a Cadillacpicture painted by, say, Rembrandt or my favourite painterJan Vermeer van Delft. However, such painter would haveto visit countryside for painting the Cadillac as Dutch citiesnormally do not offer the space necessary to find anyparking lot for a landyacht. Did you ever try to find suchparking in Amsterdam? I know what Im talking of. Itseven difficult to pass the narrow bends without backingbecause otherwise you believe the Cadillac will sink downin the Canal, and if you should discover a parking lot thelast third of your Cadillac would create a barrier extendinginto the street.

Cadillac Calais thus emphasizes the international, cosmopolitan features of Netherlands, while brocadeupholstery invites to link this car to Delft porcelaine: Flowerornaments, decent shapes, a long tradition of craftsmanship.Keep the Cadillac as you would a Delft vase: Clean it, polishit and display it at a prominent location - maybe somemodern Jan Vermeer will appear for creating anothermasterpiece picture...

Due to time lack, there are only a few of our European CLCmembers attending the „Grand National“ or U.S. bound membersvisiting the „Grand European“. It‘s a pity that this opportunity toshare our Cadillac experience on both sides of Atlantic is onlyaccessible for these „happy few“. For those not being able toattend the „Grand European“ I would like to introduce you tothe German Cadillac scenery which may provide you someinteresting information.

At first, I tell you who writes this article. My name is BurkhardBriessmann. I reside in the suburbs of Munich, Bavaria, whichmost of you will know from the Oktoberfest, the „MünchnerKindl“ and the world-famous castles of our king Ludwig 2nd, a„must“ for all U.S. tourists who visit Europe. I’m working hereas an attorney and have a family with my wife and 4 children, which is very rare in Germany’s rather selfish „elbow-society“. Iam member of the Classic Cadillac Club of Germany, theOldsmobile Club of America (OCA) and – of course – of CLC.For now about 8 years I have been the editor-in-chief of ourGerman Cadillac Club magazine, called „THE STANDARD“,alluding to Cadillac`s ever-present advertising slogan. Surely, you may also be interested which car is the preferred choice ofa German attorney, and you won’t be deluded: I can release anaffidavit – from the moment of having earned my driving license,I never wanted to drive anything other than an U.S.-built car ofGeneral Motors (even if I should be constrained to take a rentalcar), and following this rule, at the moment I‘m using a collectionof nineteen all-American, all-GM cars even for daily drivingpaying (expensive) attention to keep all of them in collectibleshape: eight Cadillacs (1978 Sedan deVille, 1979 FleetwoodBrougham d’Elegance, 1981 Seville, 1984 Eldorado Biarritzconvertible, 1985 Fleetwood Brougham, 1988 Brougham, 1990Fleetwood Sixty Special, 1994 Fleetwood RWD) five Buicks

(1982 Electra with 20k miles, 1988 Park Avenue, 1991 ParkAvenue, 1996 Roadmaster Limited Sedan, 1996 RoadmasterEstate Limited) and six marvellous low-mileage showroomcondition Oldsmobiles (1978 Delta Eighty-Eight Royale Sedan,1979 Delta Eighty-Eight Royale Coupe, 1979 Ninety-EightRegency as armored ET 620 „Executive President“ versioncustom made by Executive Coachbuilders at Springfield, MO,1979 Ninety-Eight Regency Diesel and 1979 Cutlass SupremeBrougham both with red leather interior and 1985 ToronadoBrougham with all options).

In Germany, driving an American car is as exotic as snow inPuerto Rico. That may be caused by the fact that in Germanyyou pay car owners tax for every cui of your engine, so carswith big displacement are very expensive to hold even if youdon’t drive a mile. In addition to that, some tax exemptionswhich save money because the car has an approved catalystcleaning system depend on certificates which usually are notavailable for American cars because GM renounced on themas consequence of the low sales in Europe. Thus, e.g. U.S.cars equipped with catalytic converter and 425 cui from 1978have to pay full „air pollution tax“ with about 2,500.00 dollarsper year even if in 1978 there was not one German car whichhad air pollution devices.

As consequence of German tax rules, domestic cars fordecades had engines with nearly no displacement and thereforeused less fuel than traditionally big U.S. engines. This led tothe public opinion that U.S. cars are heavy gas guzzlers. Timeshave changed since GM introduced electronic fuel injectionmanagement and transmissions with overdrives, but this turnoverwas not noticed by German consumers. The reason for thisignorance can be imposed on German motor journalists who

refuse systematically to publish something which couldinvalidate the – really stupid – statement that German cars arethe best of the world. For example, in 1979 there was a Dieselcomparison test in our leading car magazine. As Americanparticipant they chose the super-luxury Olds Ninety-Eight andin spite of being the roomiest, utmost comfortable, fastest, mostsilent, smoothest and by far best-equipped car of the contest, they rated the Ninety-Eight on the last place. The winner wasan Audi which had such a weakengine that it wasn’t evenpossible to get data at a speedof 90 mph because the car didn’treach this speed. The reason forthe glorious victory of Audi wasthe best handling ability – nowonder with an engine thatwasn’t even capable to reach thespeed where you could testroadability! I know what I saywhen I compare my 1979 OldsDiesel to the current Audi 3.0-litre-turbodiesel because I drove both cars. It’s sheerlyunbelievable to enjoy the superb comfort of the Olds Ninety-Eight which delivers utmost luxury and an engine as smoothand powerful as a gasoline V8 when you compare it to the AudiA6 3.0 Turbo Quattro which gives you all the feelings you havein a medieval torture chamber: loud, harsh transmission shifts, absent climate control, seats which immediately make youfeel all your spinal regions of your body in the most painfulmanner you can imagine.

Reading U.S. automotive press, it seems unbelievable to ushere in „Old Europe“ that in „God`s own country“ motoringjournalists permit that cars made by BMW, Mercedes or evenAudi are able to win contests against the top-of-the-line-modelsmade by GM such as Cadillac DeVille/DTS, Buick Lucerne/Park Avenue or – in former times – Olds Ninety-Eight Regency.I am sure that public awareness of this astonishment which

German U.S. car enthusiasts usually have is rather unknownto U.S. citizens.

There was also a consequent suppressing of American carquality by German automotive press. The Cadillac Seville andEldorado from 1980 to 1985 or the Cadillac FWD DeVilles andFleetwoods from 1984 up provided a quality level which wasreached by German cars only about ten years later (and is still

copied by the Mercedes BenzS-class of today), however youcould never read much about theleadership of Cadillac and GMin the luxury market. Instead ofacknowledging the qualities ofeveryday driving –spaciousness, quiet ride, comfortable seating – carjournalists in Germany and –surprisingly – also the U.S. cryfor cars which can top the recordlap at Nürburgring or Silverstone,

but urge medical treatment if you have survived more than 100miles in such cars suffering of an aching spinal column.

Therefore, Cadillac drivers in Germany are suspected to ignorethe environment and to have much money because of owningsuch an expensive car. On the other hand, this opinion putsCadillac onto the top when someone is asked which automotivebrand stands for luxury. Even a Chevy Caprice is ranked ashigh as any Mercedes and a big block Cadillac equals anyMaybach in rankings of normal people.

As result of these strange market basics, there are only fewpeople who buy and drive American. There are some meetings(often organized by the „Street“ magazine) where not only carenthusiasts gather, but also those people who like the U.S.and the American way of life and enjoy the atmosphere, burgersand Miller beer from Milwaukee. Besides these events – whichoften show a certain hillbilly-touch – or common „oldtimer“ carmeetings – where you can „adore“ German cars from the fiftiesas little as a rabbit hutch – specific events for U.S. car brandsare very rare.

This was the basic reason why in 1992 the „Classic CadillacClub of Germany“, which is officially registered at court, wasfounded. In comparison to membership figures of CLC, our200 members seem ridiculously few, however these membersare spread about entire Germany and represent a network offriendship over the whole country.

Once a year, we organize our „Event“ which can be comparedto the „Grand National“ of the CLC, and also one „winter meeting“

Page 34: Special Edition STANDARD GE 2010 RICHELIEU, … Edition STANDARD GE 2010 RICHELIEU, FRANCE ... A8 was the first passenger car Diesel V8 in the industry. ... un Cadillac se rappelle

where we celebrate the approachingChristmas time. One of our Clubfellows, Georg Pfeiffer from Austria,is organizing annually the „CadillacBigmeet (webpage www.cadillac-bigmeet.com) at Kremsmünster,Austria, where far more than 100Cadillacs from about sevencountries gather each year inAugust to celebrate our favouriteautomotive brand.

Even if we have a reduced numberof members, the overall quality ofour cars is remarkably aboveaverage, and often our memberswin awards when their cars arejudged at meetings.

The range of our model years iswidespread, but we have nearly nomembers with cars before 1940.Like in the CLC, we think that eventhe most recent Cadillacs are a future „Classic“ so that wehave no limitation for our „youngtimer“ members. So we areproud to have one member from Munich with his DeVille DTSand Night Vision System which until today remains a featurethat is unbelievable for Germans and was ignored for years byGerman motor press which now praise the active infrared systemin the new Mercedes S-class presented in Germany as amilestone in automotive engineering keeping secret that Cadillachas offered a decisively more sophisticated passive infraredsystem 5 years ago!

For our members it is not even required to own a Cadillacbecause our goal lies in preserving and cherishing the potentialof engineering, lifestyle, attitude and culture which is representedby any Cadillac. Driving Cadillac is not limited to cover a distancebetween Munich and Hamburg, it is always a commitment to adecent, gracious style which is consequence of the eleganceof every Cadillac and which reflects dimensions of our historyand of friendship to the U.S., the country where freedom andthe ability to respect the rights of other people are much moreendemic than in Germany. Thus, driving a Cadillac allows to usan experience that enlightens our daily life and makes it easyto find fellows with a similar attitude.

I’ve not yet participated in a CLC Grand National meeting;however I think that these meetings resemble a family meetingin the same manner as our annual „Events“ here on the mostbeautiful locations in Germany.

As in the CLC, the club magazineplays an important role in the lifeof the association. The magazinehas the task to connect people whoencounter themselves only a fewtimes each year. Thus, themagazine reflects our commonattitude and keeps our membersinformed so that they feelthemselves as part of ourcommunity even if they never showup at any event. Clearly, our„STANDARD“ magazine providesall information about meetings andcruising tours all over Europe.Especially, we cover the biggestEuropean U.S. car meeting inVästeras, Sweden with over 12thousand classic U.S. cars everyyear, the Cadillac Bigmeet inKremsmünster, Austria, and theround trips trough France whichoften include the return to the

origins of Cadillac in a little town amid the world-famous wineregion of Bordeaux. Thus, the „STANDARD“ helps to keep aliveour community of Cadillac lovers here on the old continent.

Our struggle is also to keep aware the consciousness for thosequalities of cars which are important for everyday-driving andnot only for race tracks. Therefore we also keep us informedabout any technical news regarding Cadillac and hope thattraditional values which have been lost in the past 15 years –when American cars more and more resembled Japanese orEuropean products – will return soon. Maybe you can imaginehow frenetically we applauded concept cars like the CadillacVoyagé and the Cadillac Sixteen. Cadillac has impressedEuropean people because it was traditionally not only the bestcar you could buy but also a car which demonstrated itssuperiority by lavish, ritzy styling. Cars like the Seville STS –even if together with the fantastic DTS actually by far the bestcars in the world if you compare them to any competitor – lackthis additional lasting impression of pride and hugeness whichthe RWD Fleetwood and Brougham and DeVille have deliveredover decades and which made it unnecessary to explain toanyone that this car was „standard of the world“. Despite suchcreatures as BLS („Boring Little Saab“) and the economicalcrisis of today we hope that GM and Cadillac some day maycreate a resurrection of these qualities which resembles the re-appearance of the Camaro of the Sixties. Until this shouldhappen, we are preserving and cosseting our gracious dinosaurswith the wreath and crest emblem enjoying friendship withpeople which share our attitudes.

A cars name has huge influence on the decision to buy.And therefore manufacturers spend millions of dollars inmarket researches to find out how to dub their latest pro-duct in a manner that attracts buyers as much as possible.

Market rivals in the so-called Premium sector are allusing letter codes: Lexus LS 450, Infiniti M, Mercedes S 500,BMW 745. Starting with Chryslers 300 series in the Fifties, letter codes have become common. Cadillac strongly re-fused to change to letter codes even if Series 62 did re-semble to a letter code. But starting with disappearance ofthe Series 62 in 1964, decades followed where a Cadillacalways had a name as if it was a natural person.

This habit changed only at the soil of the 21st century: Evenif alluding to DeVille Touring Sedan and Seville TouringSedan, DTS and STS delivered a new flavor in Cadillacsname lineup, and XLR and XRS were the first Cadillacsrenouncing completely on any temptation to explain whythe car had this name. This makes a difference to competi-tors because traditionally Lexus or Mercedes used to choo-se their letters indicating displacement, meaning that aLexus LS 420 had a 4,2-litre-engine oder a Mercedes 500 a5-litre. However, for some years even this indication of dis-placement does deceive customers because of lean cost pro-duction and the struggle to achieve less fuel consumptionusing downsized engines. Thus, Mercedes E-class buyersmay choose between E 200 CDI, E 220 CDI and E 250 CDI,but ALL these cars have the same 2,1-litre engine distingu-ished among them only by different injection layout. OrBMW, where the new 750i delivers only 4,4 litres of dis-placement and the new 740i a blameful 2,9-litre!

So there is no real reason for letter codes. Rather, try toremember the difference between current Cadillacs: XLRand SRX - or was it XRS or XRL? Other than a real name, such designation does not offer any link to the car and peo-ple who remember phone numbers better than others mayhave an advantage in recognizing such cars while otherpeople may choose their number plate letter code as namefor their car because its insignificant anyway.

We would not discuss this topic if wed not know that Ca-dillac presented its new top sedan this January at Detroit

Call it FCall it FCall it FCall it FCall it Fleetwleetwleetwleetwleetwood!ood!ood!ood!ood!

Motor Show. This super-luxury car was announced as Ca-dillac XTS, and here there is the problem.

XTS says absolutely nothing, like SRX and XLR, and willbe confused with the other 3-letter-codes and those of otherbrands like Jaguars XJS. There is no link to the gloriousCadillac history. Even someone buying his first Cadillacwould appreciate to buy a piece of history and a car thathas a name famous for quality, outstanding design andunsurpassed luxury amenities.

Therefore our proposal: Make the XTS the new Fleetwood. There will be no need to explain why because even today ifyou show a Fleetwood of the past to anyone looking at thiscar, people know that Fleetwood is the top of the line Ca-dillac. Cadillac buyers want to see some distance betweentheir car and the rest of the world, and re-gaining thisname would allow to create this distance to any facelessname of the rest of automotive competitors.

Surely, people wont buy a car only because of its name. But if the car meets the buyers` expectations, they will beconvinced much easier and faster to sign the purchase con-tract if they can buy not only a car, but a piece of history.

I believe that we as fellows of the CLC and its affiliatedclubs all over the world should be able to guess whatwould be necessary to bring back the success to Cadillac. In our changing world where topspeed and fast accelerati-on loose their value in favour of comfort and economy, ex-actly the pampered, silent, plush ride of a traditional Ca-dillac delivers what the world is calling for. Thus, Cadil-lac should avoid to copy so-called premium brands withqualities which will not only be important for the futurebut lead the way offering ultra-posh, comfortable ride ex-perience combined with sophisticated engineering. It wasMercedes and BMW, not Cadillac, which had to pay gasguzzler tax in the Eighties and Nineties following C.A.F.E.rules, and until today you dont find any competitor mat-ching Cadillacs economy and comfort.

There is only one conclusion. We should engage ourselvesin the discussion which was promised to the customers ofthe new GM when developing their products and theirstrategy. We as those who devote their spare time to thepreservation and heritage of Cadillac are aware which at-tributes are necessary to keep the Cadillac spirit alive. Therefore we should start to make our opinion heard bythose who will have to decide finally about the dubbing ofthe new big Cadillac and maybe also about the destiny ofthe brand.

I have to admit that we all as collectors will have somefiner attitude towards history, but I believe firmly thattradition is one of the highest and hardest earned benefitsof Cadillac which is worth to preserve - or can you imaginea Cadillac Grand European of 2050 where XLR, SRX, XLS,DTX, XTD, SXR, RLX, XRS, SST, TSX, TXD Cadillacs are li-ned up and you need a particular directory to distinguishthem ?

Burkhard Briessmann

On aura besoin dun annuaire à distinguer entreeux.

U.S. fellows like to say Gods own country talking abouttheir country of origin. In Germany we say living likeGod in France if we want to describe a life filled withendless pleasure. Both proverbs contain some truth, andso we try to examine if using the view of an automotiveenthusiast we may be able to approach France under thisaspect.

Automotively, France delivers one of the most importantcharacteristics which have become endemic for Cadillac.France cars - as compact as they may be - have ever deli-vered utmost comfort. Even simply engineered cars as theRenault 4 or the Citroën 2CV deliver a surprising level ofcomfort when driven over bumpy, uneven country roads. And French classics as the unforgettable Renault 16 or thePeugeot 504 delivered a long trip comfort which allowedto travel over more than thousand kilometres effortlessly.

This fact is due to the old principle of savoir vivre whichhas been striking for France for centuries. Live and let live- this attitude guarantees to all the folks that they mayenjoy their life best with no others offending them for theirbehaviour. Therefore, in France your fellow citizens do notlook at the car someone drives but only behind the facade ifthere is a fellow worth the attention. So you may behaveas you want - people look behind the public curtain andlook at the man behind treating you as well as anyone nomatter which car you are using. In Germany, for example,if you arrive in a car with high displacement, people assu-

me you ought to be something special even if this shoulddiffer remarkably from the truth.

Thus, in France you may not be forced to try and build upa different identity - you are appreciated independentlyfrom your money and your status. Maybe this is the re-ason for the matter of fact that in the last decades Franceauto manufacturers did not develop any ultra-representa-tive limousines serving the purpose to erect a facade ofstatesman attitude but merely comfortable cars not dis-playing outwardly their qualities of amenity and comfort.

However, a look backin automotive histo-ry enlightens that forsome glorious years, the automotive godreally lived in Fran-ce: Between 1955 and1976 Citroën built itsworld-famous DS,spoken Deesse- go-dess - which togetherwith its successor CXeven from the point ofview of a Cadillacdriver is one of thevery few desirablecars built outside ofDetroit. Its a pitythat French manufac-turers lost this wayeven if the Citroën C6does resemble itspredecessors morethan the Citroën XM.

My Cadillac miles -and also the milesdriven with Oldsmo-biles and Buicks - th-rough France revealthat U.S. cars delivera surprising linkbetween this countryand the design andlayout of these cars.Huge avenues in thecities, straight coun-try roads and longhighways allow todrive in Americanstyle. We also admire how the lines and edges of U.S. carswere designed and therefore have an open eye for architec-ture and landscape views. Therefore, its a striking feelingto see this beautifully shaped car rolling through an envi-ronment where the pleasure to the eye was one of the prin-cipal goals. To see the long curves of a Cadillac in front of acastle in the Loire valley, to enjoy cruising down the Mo-yenne Corniche overlooking Monte Carlo and having al-ternatively the turquoise sea, the blue sky, the green Medi-terranean pines or the red rocks as background for thewreath and crest ornament or to enjoy the ultimate dri-

voiture.

Cest, ainsi, uneémotion puissante a voire cette belle voiture roulant dansune paysage ou le plaisir de lil était un objectif impor-tant. ving experience when coasting down the Avenue deChamps-Elysèes in an Eldorado convertible with top down, the obelisk of Place de la Concorde over the hood and Arcde Triomphe in the rearview mirror: France does exposeexceptional driving situations. For me such impressionsare always mixed with history converting a simple roundtrip in a journey through past - and in the case of France -glorious times. Rough impressions of the beginning of cul-ture of mankind crossing Britanny with its standing stones, bright antique luxury symbolized by the various aque-ducts in Provence, impressive medieval buildings even iffrom world-leading abbeys as e.g. Cluny there are merelyexisting some scarce relicts, the skyscraping grace of go-thic cathedrals spread over the whole country, the ultima-te grandeur of castles of absolutism, the use of iron as asign for the age of industrialization as the Eiffel tower orthe Bir Hakeim Bridge in Paris, and last but not least thehighlights of modern architecture as Palais Chaillot, Cen-tre Pompidou and Bibliotheque de France in Paris - drivingthrough France adds the touch of history to every mileand thus gives an answer to our initial question: A car ofGods own country in the country where God lives - youcannot imagine a more superb combination for drivingexperiences. If God should return to the world - surely hewould appear in France, and I believe he would do thisbehind the steering wheel of a vintage Cadillac!
