CITY OF MIAMISBURG

CIVIC FOCUS

Spring 2018

Happy Birthday, Miamisburg! Our community was founded 200 years ago, and we have a special year planned to celebrate this milestone. After all, a Bicentennial only comes along once.

It’s going to be an extraordinary year, and that’s the way it should be. History is a precious thing to a great many people who have called Miamisburg home, and community pride is rich here. For about three years, our citizen-based committee has been working hard to make 2018 memorable. The stage is now set, and we couldn’t be more excited!

The Bicentennial theme is going to be incorporated into some of our annual Miamisburg events throughout the year, while some have been created solely to commemorate the milestone. We hope you’ll attend as many of these activities as possible, but the featured week to mark on your calendars is June 16-23. That’s when the Star City’s light will shine brightest for all to see.

Each day that week will have its own theme, and the events and activities taking place will focus on various aspects of our history. Among the highlights will be:

• Opening and closing parades down Central Avenue with some great entries never before seen in our community.

Did you know? The actual founding date of Miamisburg was Feb. 20, 1818.

Miamisburg at 200: Celebrating our community heritage • Live entertainment, including

performances by The Ohio State University Alumni Band, the Wright Brass band and the Dayton Philharmonic Concert Band. As a gift to the community, Kettering Health Network/ Sycamore Medical Center will present a concert by national recording artist Ricky Skaggs.

• Activities that pay tribute to our Native American heritage.

• A spectacular fireworks display on Closing Night.

A detailed schedule of events can be found inside this publication, and we encourage you to clip it and post somewhere in your home.

Our Bicentennial events are being funded by contributions from individuals, businesses and organizations, and we want to thank all of these contributors. Our celebration would not be possible without their generosity.

In this special edition of the Civic Focus community newsletter, you’ll find details about our Bicentennial plans. We want our residents to be a part of history and join us as often as possible throughout 2018. We also encourage you to visit miamisburg200.org and the Miamisburg 200th Facebook page for updates throughout the year.

BICENTENNIAL

Info on TVTwo recent additions to the City’s cable TV programming lineup feature Bicentennial promotion.

Mayor Dick Church, Jr.’s 2018 State of the City address debuted recently with the theme “A Bicentennial Year.” In a twist to his annual presentation, the mayor dons vintage clothing from the 1800s and incorporates numerous historic references from the City’s heritage. He also sports facial hair in support of the Brothers of the Brush exhibition that will showcase bearded men in June. As usual, he also provides an update on various City projects, reviews highlights in the community from 2017 and previews the year ahead.

Secondly, the mayor was joined by Bicentennial Co-Chair Kurt Stueve and Marketing Sub-Committee Co-Chair Kimm Mote on the January episode of Let’s Talk Miamisburg. The trio provided details on a variety of Bicentennial events and activities during the 30-minute program.

Both programs were produced by the Miami Valley Communica-tions Council and can be seen on Spectrum cable’s channel 5 and AT&T’s channel 99. Programming schedules and online viewing for these and other Miamisburg shows, including City Council meetings, are available at mvcc.net. H

Bicentennial Briefs

Putting polish on the Star CityThe City of Miamisburg took numerous steps in 2017 to prepare for the Bicentennial spotlight and an influx of visitors. Among the projects to upgrade the appearance around the downtown area:

Riverfront ParkAs soon as the weather permits, work will resume on the latest phase of improvements. Before winter began, a new 1,000-foot roadway with curb and sidewalk was built between Linden Avenue and Ferry Street to replace an alleyway adjacent to the business

district. The $1.6 million project will be completed soon with installation of a final layer of asphalt, new landscaping, upgraded lighting and other aesthetic features.

Indian SculptureThe luster was restored to the Kneeling by the Miami sculpture that welcomes visitors to the Miamisburg Civic Center on First Street. This life-sized depiction of a Miami Indian had accumulated unsightly limestone since its installation in 2002 and was shipped to a contractor in Zanesville for restoration. Private funding through the Miamisburg Community Foundation covered the project cost. This public art was
