PRESIDENT’S PAGEFebruary 2005

This year’s dinner dance was held on January 22nd at Laurel Manor in Livonia. Our hosts were John and

Clara Hill and Rick and Joann Jones, and what a superb job they did. Th e food, facility, band and entertainment were all top drawer. Despite the severe weather, we had about 150 in attendance, and all appeared to have a great time. Th is year the club awarded certifi cates of appreciation to members and their wives for their extra eff ort in contributing to the operation of our club in 2004. A total of 38 certifi cates were issued. We also gave a certifi cate to Lou and Judi Stanford, our car show sponsors. Hank Dawson was awarded a plaque commemorating his Generator award in 2003. And Larry Swanson was presented the generator award for 2004 as newsletter editor. A total of 7 members were awarded their 25 year membership name badge, and Raye Klopfenstein was awarded his 30 year membership badge. I want to thank Art Cervi and Pat Kaluzny for assisting me with the presentations. Finally, the incoming and outgoing Board members were all presented to the group, and they got an enthusiastic response from the audience. Look elsewhere in the newsletter for those receiving certifi cates. We again thank our hosts for their eff orts on behalf of the club. Our members are still talking about the young entertainers that performed the “Irish Jig”. John and Clara Hill have again volunteered for the 2005 Dinner Dance on December 3rd. Th ey are going to be a tough act to follow. We may have to keep them involved in this ad-infi nitum! I attended the Kalamazoo Swap meet on February 5th, and passed out hundreds of fl yers. I will have more fl yers available at the March meeting. Please take some and help me get them distributed at swap meets, car cruises and shows. We are projecting having our 2005 membership rosters available at the April meeting. Jerry Mattson is working hard to see you all get a good quality roster. Jerry will be stepping down as our membership secretary after this years roster is printed. Brian Saylor has agreed to take on

this very crucial position. Jerry has been in the process of passing the torch over to Brian. I want to thank Brian for his willingness to accept the challenge. We also want to thank Jerry for an eff ort that Brian will fi nd is a tough act to follow. Please set aside February 26th to meet at the Automotive Hall of Fame at Greenfi eld Village. I have 50 tickets to give out. Arrival time is 10am. We will have at least one more destination and some food and refreshments before the day is done.We will have a Por 15 Representative and the author of a book on the Ford Rotunda present at our March meeting, so….Don’t forget the March meeting will be March 2nd at the K of C Hall at 7pm.Till next time,

Bob Guetschow

Larry Swanson Receives Prestigious Generator Award

The Generator Award is the most prestigious honor bestowed by the FMRC. Th e Board selects that

member who contributed the most to the club during the previous year, i.e., the person who generated the most “energy.” Th is year’s recipient is Larry Swanson for his outstanding work on the newsletter. Below, in an exclusive interview to the Rotunda Times, Larry refl ects on his contributions and the club. “I was very surprised when I heard that I had been awarded the Generator Award for this year. I believe that every member of any club should do his or her part to support the club they belong to. Th is can be done in many ways depending on their abilities. I joined the FMRC because I had just purchased a 1953 Ford and had no idea where to go to get the services, parts and things I wanted for the car. I purchased it because it was like the fi rst car I had owned. It looked great when I saw it, but after I got it home I realized that it was in need of some TLC! Since I have belonged to the FMRC I have gotten some very good advice and made some good friends along the way. I decided that I should give something back to the club for helping me restore my car. I helped at the swap meet for a couple of years and then agreed to help with the newsletter. I fi gured I could at least do the mailing as I was already doing that for another club I belonged to at the time. I was talked into being the Editor and told that all I had to do was see that everyone got their stuff in on time. I must say that the fi rst few months were a bit hairy! I talked my son into helping me set up the format and next thing I know he is helping me each month put it all together! Th en I was able to do the mailing that I originally fi gured I could do.

Having done the newsletter for the past two years has helped me get to know many of the guys in the club -- I no longer felt like I was not part of the group. I think that’s what belonging to a club is all about!

I am very proud to have my name on a plaque that has 30 other names on it from over the years. I know some of the names and I wonder what the other people did to get the award. I intend to continue to help the FMRC in any way I can in the future. I also want everyone to know that without my son’s help I would not have been able to do this. I told him that he gets to keep the award for 6 months and I get it for 6 months! ”

A Note from the Treasurer

I’d like to thank the membership for the support and positive feedback that I’ve been getting including

the suggestion to see if we can get interest on our bank account. We are now in the process of changing banks. In this manner we will not only not pay any service fees, but will also accrue interest on our balance! Steve Rohde, Treasurer

February Meeting Minutes of the

FMRCOAFebruary 2, 2005

The meeting began promptly at 7:01 which must be some kind of a record. New members and

guests were welcomed. James Robb, owner of a 1929 Ford roadster was present. Dirk Swanson, Larry’s son, was a guest and was thanked for his able help with the newsletter. Some of our members who have been under the weather were mentioned and Jim Underwood and Don Olson were among those. Don was at the meeting and seemed to be doing well after his operation. The new board members were introduced again for the benefit of those who might not have been at the meeting during last month’s snowstorm. Dave Cheklich received his 25 year name badge, and Bill Amici and Louis Ironside will receive theirs via the US mail. Larry Swanson was presented with the generator award, and he graciously gave some of the credit to his son. There were several certificates of appreciation presented to members for various tasks done well. Please see the article about the awards elsewhere in this newsletter. Bob mentioned some items of interest or possible upcoming events. Dearborn Motorcars Warehouse is available for car storage at $90/month, and may be a possible garage tour destination. An appraiser has approached us and would like to do a presentation, and after some discussion it was decided that he would be invited. Emily Klopfenstein gave Bob a petition on dove hunting and members were invited to sign it if they wished. The minutes for the January meeting were read by the secretary and were accepted by a motion from the floor. The treasurer’s report was presented by Steve Rohde, and was accepted in the same manner. There were questions from the floor about a money market account and this will be discussed by the treasurer and the board. John Hill gave a report on the dinner dance, and there were many favorable comments. Next year’s dinner dance will be held on December 3rd in order to try and include some of our snowbirds.

Jerry reported that we have 251 membership renewals, but that we should all try and recruit some new members. Steve said that he would like to have some new material for the newsletter, so see what you can come up with. There were 400 pictures taken at the dance and some of them will be put on the web site. Dave mentioned that all FMRCOA data is backed up on the computer and that we have had 1600 members since the club’s inception. There are 50 tickets available to the Automotive Hall of Fame and our club will be going on the 26th of Feb. At 10;00. Our feature presenter for the evening was one of our more senior members and long time car enthusiast, Bob Grandy. He shared lots of great stories of his early escapades with old Fords, and gave us lots of facts about the early engines. It was really enjoyable listening to a real voice of experience. Show and tell, the 50-50 drawing, and adjournment followed. Respectfully submitted,

February Show and TellFirst off I brought a lamp that was made from an oil can and trouble lamp shade. I bought it 20 years ago at a fl ea market. Nice workmanship!

Next, Mike Riemenschneider displayed some Ford racing pictures from the 50s and 60s, probably from the Autolite division. Roger Hodyka showed us a picture of Mario Andretti in a publicity photofrom1969 at Indy and some press release letters from the same period. Bill Bella let us enjoy three Christmas coloring books from the Ford Rotunda from the early 60s. He just bought them on E-Bay. Let’s see your stuff in March!

On a snowy January 22nd, about 150 hearty souls braved the elements to attend the 2004 Annual

Dinner-Dance held at Laurel Manor in Livonia. Based on the fact that no one wanted the evening to end, they were not disappointed.Co-hosted by Rick and JoAnn Jones along with John and Clara Hill, the evening was fi lled with good fun. Each male attendee was treated to a 2005 Junk Yard Calendar and each of the ladies received her own box of chocolates. Eighteen lucky ladies each received one of the beautiful center pieces that adorned each table. Th ey were beautiful, the fl owers too. Cocktail hour featured food, drink and some smooth jazz by the Fairlane Five.A scrumptious dinner was served consisting of a fi let mignon and chicken breast with all the trimmings.

Mr. & Mrs. Maurice Horger

Following dinner, the Shamrock Four, an Irish Dance Troupe gave a world class performance that had nearly everyone on their feet. I can’t say enough about these four young, very talented performers. Th ey were great! Our President, Bob Guetschow, with assistance from Art Cervi and Pat Kaluzny, did the 2004 award presentation

2004 Annual Dinner-Dance a Major Successs. Each individual whose participation in club activities helped make 2004 a great success was honored with a Certifi cate of Appreciation. For 2004, Larry Swanson was selected by the board of directors as the recipient of the prestigious Generator Award. Following the awards ceremony, everyone got their chocolate fi x for the night. A chocolate fountain featuring fruit, cookies and other goodies was very busy for the rest of the evening. Th e Fairlane Five picked up where they left off playing requests that kept us all dancing the night away. John Hill
