NMESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARDAs the end of the year approaches, it is my hope that you enjoyed a wonderful Holiday Season filled with joy. I am pleased to report that as the Foundation’s fiscal year came to a close, your interest, trust and generosity helped produce yet another amazing year. It is with honor that the Foundation announces the following fiscal year-end highlights: During the past fiscal year, over 2,300 children received vital speech, language and literacy therapy. A total of 23,687 hours of therapy were provided by Certified Speech and Language Pathologists at the 14 RiteCare Childhood Language Centers and 12,995 volunteer hours were donated to the Foundation.

While speech and language therapy are front and center to the Foundation’s mission, RiteCare Center professionals also help to change lives through the gift of literacy. I am sure you agree that it is imperative for children to read proficiently. Were you aware that three out of four children who struggle with reading in third grade never catch up and are four times as likely to drop out of high school? These statistics illustrate the vital importance of early diagnosis and therapy for children with challenges related to speech, language and literacy.

The Foundation Board is thrilled to hear so many success stories, like that of Andrew Caster, who had significant reading disorders prior to receiving therapy at a local RiteCare Language Center. Not only does Andrew now succeed academically, and plans to attend college, but he has also attained the status of Illustrious Knight Commander of Saint Bernard Priory, Southern California Jurisdiction, of the Order of DeMolay (read Andrew’s story on the adjacent page). Andrew’s success is a direct result of your generous support ~ thank you!

The Foundation serves more than children in need. Your generous gifts have also helped provide $267,000 in scholarships to over 100 students, as well as significant assistance to military Veterans for job training, legal services and temporary housing. Thank you for helping to make a difference in so many lives!

Best wishes for a healthy, abundantly blessed 2019!

THE RITE TO READAndrew struggled in school until properly diagnosed at a local RiteCare Childhood Language Center, and today has his sights on college. Sean Caster is beaming with pride over his son, Andrew, 17, who is committed to education and leadership and serves as an Illustrious Knight Commander of Saint Bernard Priory, Southern California Jurisdiction, of the Order of DeMolay!

But in first and second grade, school was a constant struggle for Andrew, and the Caster family was filled with anguish, until Andrew was finally diagnosed with dyslexia at a local RiteCare Language Center. Finally, there was hope.

After receiving extensive therapy at the Language Center, Andrew was able to read, despite having dyslexia.

According to Sean, the professional Speech and Language Pathologists “helped Andrew develop the techniques he needed to function in school. When Andrew began therapy, it was hard for him to see and understand the concept of letters, he saw everything differently, and the therapists were great at helping him. They definitely impacted him in a way that he was able to advance in reading and writing.”

Andrew was always social as a child, and today the entire family is filled with joy that he is a capable public speaker, while overcoming the challenges of dyslexia. He’s planning to attend college after high school graduation!

“That’s his goal, to go out and continue his education, and his role as Illustrious Knight Commander of Saint Bernard Priory, Southern California Jurisdiction, of the Order of DeMolay,

in which he has been active since he was 12 years old” Sean Caster stated.

Through the specialized speech, language and literacy programs at the 14 RiteCare Childhood Language Centers in California, thousands of children each year overcome speech, language and literacy barriers, and the children and their families are able to experience life-changing improved communication.

According to Sean, “If you ever meet Andrew, you would never realize he has any kind of language or literacy issues at all. We are so grateful to the RiteCare Language Center for the therapy he received, it changed his life!”

Andrew’s therapy was made possible by donors just like you! The California Scottish Rite Foundation believes literacy is paramount to a child’s success. This holiday season you can make a difference by helping a child just like Andrew succeed ~ one word at a time!

Please Partner with us to make a Life-Changing Difference for a Child Today!

Why Speech and Language MattersSpeech, language and literacy therapy can be a lifesaving service for a child with communication challenges. Many people know that speech therapy can improve a child’s ability to understand language and express thoughts, ideas and feelings. They may also be aware that speech therapy can help a child speak more clearly or improve stuttering. What may not be well known is that speech, language and literacy therapy can improve independent problem-solving skills, improve social skills, increase independence, improve self-esteem and as a result provide a better overall quality of life.

It is well documented that children need to be reading proficiently by fourth grade, as research shows that young students are transitioning from “learning to read” to “reading to learn” during third and fourth grade. Current data reveals that three out of four children who struggle with reading in third grade never catch up and are four times as likely to drop out of high school. The U.S.

Department of Education statistics reveal that high school dropouts are more than twice as likely as college graduates to live in poverty, and over 80% of the incarcerated population is comprised of high school dropouts. These statistics illustrate the vital importance of early diagnosis and therapy for children with challenges related to speech, language and literacy.

Failing to treat childhood language disorders can lead to low self-esteem and life-long problems such as limited employment options, emotional and psychological stress, and increased likelihood for interactions with the justice system and incarceration. The California RiteCare Childhood Language Centers want to ensure that children across California with communication challenges have access to therapy services so that they can develop the skills necessary to find academic, social, and vocational success and be productive members of society.

5 Easy Ways to Give With Tax-Smart Donations Before December 31st

You can still make an impact this year! There are many ways to give to the California Scottish Rite Foundation or your local RiteCare Childhood Language Center, several of which offer attractive benefits to you while supporting the important work we do. Here are five popular ways you can make a difference this year:

Give Cash, Check or Pledge. Giving Cash, a Check or a Pledge is the simplest way you can support our current needs. To document a cash gift of any amount, you must have a dated receipt from the California Scottish Rite Foundation, so make certain you receive one. A canceled check is sufficient for gifts less than $250.

Give Appreciated Stock or Other Property. When you give appreciated stock or property to benefit the California Scottish Rite Foundation or the local RiteCare Childhood Language Center of your choice, we will sell it and you will eliminate all the capital gains tax you would have paid had you sold it. Your gift will be deductible at the day of delivery’s full fair market value (assuming you have held it for more than one year).

Donate an Insurance Policy. A gift of a life insurance policy you no longer need makes a perfect year-end gift. To qualify as a deductible gift, the California Scottish Rite Foundation must become the policy owner. For most types of insurance policies, your tax deduction is usually the cost basis or the fair market value of the policy, whichever is less.

Make a Gift from your IRA. If you are 70½ or older, you can make a difference by transferring any amount up to $100,000 annually directly from your IRA. The transfer doesn’t generate taxable income or a tax deduction, so you benefit even if you do not itemize your tax deductions.

Invest in a Life Income Plan. A life income gift provides you with payments for the rest of your life and the California Scottish Rite Foundation or local RiteCare Childhood Language Center of your choice with support thereafter. If you use appreciated securities that you’ve owned longer than a year to fund the gift, you will be entitled to an income tax deduction based, in part, on the charitable portion of the securities’ full value, in addition to eliminating up-front capital gains tax.

Contact Lynne Elwan, Major Gifts Officer at 714-547-7325 for helpful tips about getting the most from your gift this year while benefiting the Children, Students and Veterans we serve.
