Abstract:

Green manufacturing pertains to the goal of manufacturing with minimumimpacttotheenvironment.TheimminentreleaseofISO50001highlightstheglobal commitment to reduction in energy consumption. In productdevelopment, product life cycle management is a key driver with strongemphasis on computer‐aided‐design, simulation, computer‐aided‐manufacturing, and rapid prototyping. The move in green manufacturingfurther enhances the product life cycle management operation withadditional emphasis on new materials development, new processes andmanagement, and knowledgemanagement. The demand formore in‐depthsimulation and analysis also implies a quest towards technology‐intensiveoperations. This favors countriesmoving towardsa strongknowledge‐basedeconomy. The emerging Asian economies, such as Korea and China, havepotentialtobenefitfromthistrend.
