PP Dave Livingston introduced our guest speaker: District Governor Clint Schroeder. DG Clint joined his first Rotary Club in June 2000. He relocated to Hawaii in 2005 and joined the Metropolitan Honolulu Club. He has served in many leadership positions and was President of Metropolitan and D5000 Vocational Chair during the 2012-13 year. Clint was born in Wyoming and earned a BA in Political Science and an MBA from the New York Institute of Technology/Cardean University. DG Clint thanked us for the invitation. He said he enjoyed the meeting with our Board this morning and congratulated the Club on the good things we are doing. DG Clint told us a story about two seas and the importance of giving back when we get something. When we share, we make the world a better place. Rotary’s theme is serving humanity. In the end we will be remembered by the ways we have served humanity through our time, treasure, and talent. Next year is the 100th anniversary of our Foundation, which is all about giving. DG Clint shared a video about polio and education, health, and hope. The last shot in the video was a note saying “Every smile is a thank you.” February last year, DG Clint participated in a National Immunization Day in New Delhi. Rotarians from India organized the event. There were men with automatic rifles patrolling the areas. They were mobbed by children who were looking forward to receiving toys. This is done three times a year in India. Having experienced this activity, DG Clint received the gift of insight. Mothers were praying for hope for their children. He learned the meaning of hope seeing the love and joy going around. We only have had 19 new infections this year. We are doing a good job, but must continue. DG Clint told us about the D5000 Polio Champions Challenge, July 1, 2016 - June 30, 2017. The goal is to raise $2,650 per club for Polio Plus. Die cast Medals of Honor and Certificates of Recognition will be given to participants. The Bill and Melinda Foundation is matching the gifts two-to-one. Our Club has already given $4900. Past Presidents Carol Riley, Dave Livingston, Gloria King, and Roy King were given Medals of Honor and another 29 members were given participation certificates. DG Clint shared two educational/literacy trips with partners in Taiwan and Myanmar during February, 2017. He encourage all members to consider participating.

WEEKLY REPORT—WEDNESDAY, JULY 27, 2016

PRESIDENTIAL MESSAGE

John F. Germ President 2016-17

Today, we look ahead toward a Rotary year that may one day be known as the greatest in our history: the year that sees the world's last case of polio. Wild

poliovirus caused only 74 cases of polio in 2015, all of them in Afghanistan and Pakistan. As we continue to work tirelessly toward our goal of eradication, we must also look beyond it: preparing to leverage our success into even greater successes to come.

It is tremendously important to Rotary's future that our role in the eradication of polio be recognized. The more we are known for what we've achieved, the more we'll be able to attract the partners, the funding, and, most important, the members to achieve even more. We're working hard at RI headquarters to be sure that Rotary gets that recognition. But it can't all happen in Evanston. We need you to get the word out through your clubs and in your communities about what Rotary is and what we do. We need to be sure that our clubs are ready for the moment when polio is finally eradicated – so that when people who want to do good see that Rotary is a place where they can change the world, every Rotary club is ready to give them that opportunity.

We know that if we want to see Rotary Serving Humanity even better in the years ahead, we'll need more willing hands, more caring hearts, and more bright minds to move our work forward. We'll need clubs that are flexible, so that Rotary service will be attractive to younger members, recent retirees, and working people. We'll need to seek out new partnerships, opening ourselves more to collaborative relationships with other organizations.

Looking ahead, we also see a clear need to prioritize continuity in our leadership. We in Rotary are all playing on the same team, working toward the same goals. If we want to reach those goals together, we all have to move in the same direction – together.

Every day that you serve in Rotary, you have the opportunity to change lives. Everything you do matters; every good work makes the world better for us all. In this new Rotary year, we all have a new chance to change the world for the better, through Rotary Serving Humanity.

President Elect Steve Koyama welcomed visiting Rotarians and exchanged banners. They are Mikie Aiyama from RC of Ota West, Toshiyuki Goto from RC Motomachi Yokohama and James Pierce from the RC of Honolulu.

All of the $100 donors were awarded Certificates for the D5000 Polio Champion. Here is the Happy Group

Since moving to Hawaii from Texas at the age of 18 back in 2000, I have immersed myself in the local community both as a small business owner and member of various organizations. I was fortunate enough to meet my wife Dhy-jeelen here and together we are raising our 5-year-old son Chris Jr. in Ewa Beach.

I attended the Maritime Training Center of the Pacific where I earned my captain’s license, which allowed me to provide ocean tours as a boat captain for Hawaii OceanTours and later Sea Breeze.

My older brother Nick and I own and operate Waikiki Dive Center and Waikiki Sport Fishing, and I also own and operate Fidelibus Properties, a boutique-style real estate company concentrating on property management and residential real estate. In addition, I help operate an expanded residential care home with my wife called Fidelibus Cottage. I understand the difficulties of owning a small business in Hawaii.

Small businesses are the backbone of our local economy and having a vested interest in this area makes me truly empathetic to the many families who operate a business and the hundreds of thousands of people they employ. I'm also a member of the Rotary Club of Waikiki, Honolulu Navy League, Sales & Marketing Executives of Honolulu and Mercury Business Association, among others. These groups have deep ties with a wide range of diverse communities through initiatives and programs for the homeless, youth, seniors, active duty, veterans and more. These are the issues and voices that an elected official needs to be exposed to on a daily basis to understand who they are serving. I may be new to holding elected office but I am fully aware of the major issues facing the people of my district and the state. Many voters no longer feel they have a voice and that their representatives no longer represent them.
