Bart the introduced guest speaker Tad Milmine, a constable with the Calgary Police Service, which he joined last March after having spent some time with the RCMP in Surrey, BC.

Tad’s early life was not a pleasant one. He grew up in an abusive home and experienced bullying on a daily basis. Like many such victims, he did not ask for help and struggled for years. In addition, he was coming to terms with his own sexuality, and at age 25 came out and told the world he is gay. At age 32, he attempted to reach his goal of becoming a police officer, which he did in 2009.

In 2011, he read about a young man named Jamie Hubley who had taken his own life after experiencing years of bullying in part for being openly gay. When Tad read about Jamie, he became determined to help make the world a better place and created a nationally recognized program called “Bullying Ends Here”. He now travels the world speaking about the effects of bullying by simply sharing his own story, and Jamie’s. More than 100,000 youths have reached out to Tad saying his program has helped them and even saved lives. He goes to schools to encourage students to talk to him, and to ask teachers to become

Today’s speaker was Don Bradshaw. Don was born and raised in Noranda Quebec, and studied at Sir George Williams University in Montreal, and McMaster in Hamilton. Don worked 43 years for the Otis elevator company, transferring often from Hamilton to Halifax, Ottawa, Montreal, and Calgary where he is now retired.

Don enjoys the study of horology or the science of measuring time. Research has found a huge market for the expensive time pieces. The leader in this luxury market is Swatch, which markets products through 12 different brands in the world, and enjoys over a

President Stephen called us to order at 12:16 p.m. and while we had no pianist, we did a creditable job singing the national anthem & the Rotary grace.

As the only Greeter today, Jim Thompson was asked to introduce the guests and visiting Rotarians. He found this a bit difficult as the writing was not entirely clear. There were 2 Rotarians from the downtown club and 3 from the South club. Guests

included the 3 daughters of Bob and Marlene Depledge, Elizabeth, Suzanne, Katherine; outbound exchange student

Karla Tejeda-Iglesias; guest speaker Tad Milmine and his associate Andy Buck; Ron Smith’s guest John Breratt; and Gwynneth’s guest Ernestine .. all were welcomed in the usual way.

Fran reports she has 3 host families lined up for the inbound exchange student.

One of the late Bob’s daughters spoke briefly on behalf of them all. She said he lived his entire life in adherence to the Rotary Four Way Test. She wore his Rotary pin today. She mentioned his abiding interest in

working at Spruce Meadows and thanked us all for being her Dad’s friends.

Minute Persons:1 Ron Smith is updating the club roster and will be passing around a copy on which changes should be recorded.2 Linda informed us the next 2 food serving events are

August 22nd and 24th, which require staffing by members who have completed the required test.3 Paul G. says more people movers are required this weekend at Spruce Meadows for the Alberta Kennel Club.4 Dale spoke on

behalf of the August 14th - 23rd Global Fest asking for volunteers for the V.I.P. parking, and a set of tickets was raffled with Ernie Hawrylyshen the winner.

The 50/50 winner today is exchange student Karla.

Paul G. was S.A.A. today and started by fining Jim for his reading of today’s visitors. He reminded us that August is Membership and Extension month in Rotary. He then posed a few questions of a couple tables but didn’t seem to raise any money for the club. He fined Bart for having his phone ring last week during our meeting. There were a couple of Good/Bad News donations, one of which was from Fran who gave some Happy Bucks for the great meal and atmosphere at the Greek restaurant, Christos’, owned by Bill Stemp’s wife and son.

27% profit margin. One of the original horologists was A.L. Breguet, who invented the self winding watch, shock protection, and enhanced lever escapement.

British contributions were recorded as John Harrison pioneered the very accurate navigation clock, winning the longitude prize of 20,000 pounds in 1773. Today’s luxury market is extremely successful world wide. Don remained after his presentation to answer questions from our members.

Anthony Tonkinson and George Van Schaick welcomed our members and guests including three of our previous outbound students, one current outbound student, and four guest Rotarians.

President Stephen opened the meeting promptly at 12:15 pm, followed by the singing of O Canada, and Rotary grace.

Fran Hochhausen introduced the outbound students, and introduced a new tradition as the Canadian flag from Ashleigh in 2010/11(Austria) was passed to Cole in 2012/13 (Thailand) to Wendy 2013/14 (Mexico), and is now presented to Karla to take with her to Germany this year.

Minute Reports included:• Paul Gaudet thanking the members who participated in the Kennel Club show at Spruce Meadows

• Wayne Wiebe requested additional donations for the Mustard Seed project currently under way• Hank Popoff thanked those participating in the Westro Food Group, reminding members of the upcoming event on August 22, 2014

The birthday tables were overflowing, as both July and August birthdays were reported by Bev Tonkinson. Present were

Bart Dailley, Duncan McKillop, Gary Miller, Bruce McDonald, Bev Tonkinson, Herb Imler, Joe Jogia, Tammy Truman, Anthony Tonkinson, and Neil Beatty. Those birthday members unable to attend were Bill Worthington, Jim Thompson, Bob Montgomery, Gerald Langereis, and Barry Korpatnisky.

involved in helping bullied students. He works to get school boards also involved.

He has responded to over 12,000 emails from troubled youth. He does all of this on his own time, while continuing his responsibilities of being a frontline police officer, and using his own money for travel etc. In fact he had to quit his job with the RCMP as he was told to stop working with gay youth on his program. That is when he came to Calgary where his work with youth is supported by the Chief and the police force.

He has been recognized by the Canadian Senate for his program for bullied youth. He recognizes the difficulty in getting through to parents of homosexuals and bullies, and works with community groups. Ed McLean was the Sergeant at Arms and made an adjustment to the regular program by introducing a raffle with the proceeds of $300 going to the Calgary Chinook Society in the name of Bob Depledge.

There was a mixture of Happy/Sad Bucks throughout the membership.

Winner of the 50/50 draw was Glad Bury.

Today’s speaker was Don Bradshaw. After President Stephen thanked Don for his presentation with a certificate of appreciation, he closed the meeting at 1:35 pm.

At the last Board meeting, the following new member proposal was accepted by the Board for membership in the Rotary Club of Calgary Chinook:

JOHN BARRAT Sponsor: Dave Wylie Classification: Ratired

In accordance with Club Bylaws, Article XI, Section 5: Method of electing New Members

“If no written objection to the proposal, stating reasons, is received by the Board from any member (other than Honourary) of the Club within seven (7) dates following publication of information about the prospective member, that person, upon payment of admission fee (if not Honourary membership) as prescribed in the bylaws, shall be considered to be elected to membership. If any such objection has been filed with the Board, it shall vote on this matter at its next meeting. If approved despite the objection, the proposed member, upon payment of the admission fee, shall be considered to be elected to membership.”

Stephen Pick, President403-938-2876 • [email protected]

Gary C.K. Huang never imagined he would become Rotary International’s president when he joined in 1976, but now that he is in office, he hopes to increase membership to 1.3 million by the end of his term.

“It’s simple. The more members we have, the more people we can help. A stronger membership base will result in stronger communities,” says Huang, who on 1 July became Rotary’s first Chinese president.

Huang also hopes his presidential theme, Light Up Rotary, will encourage members to brighten Rotary’s image to the public, which he believes in return will improve member recruitment and retention.

Huang has a track record of improving membership development in Asia, adding 19 clubs when he was district governor for Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau. One of the cornerstones of his presidency is encouraging clubs and districts to conduct a Rotary Day. These one-day events, he says, can spotlight a particular cause, and solidify Rotary’s image as one of the world’s leading service organizations.

“We need to showcase our good work to everyone in the community. Rotary Days need to be fun and all inclusive. Invite your family, friends, and neighbours to participate. My hope is at the end of the day a few non-members will want to join Rotary,” he says. “Let’s give people the opportunity to experience what it’s like to make a difference. Rotary Days can achieve that.”

As per Club practice, the Board has approved a $500 donation to the Calgary Rotary Clubs Foundation in memory of Bob Depledge.

The Club will forward a note to the family advising them of this.

October 24th, 2014District 5360 is planning to have an event this year to raise awareness about Polio Plus and of Rotary. Plans are still in development but include raising the Polio Plus flag at city hall, guest speakers, a “flash mob” and more are all in the ideas stage. Rotarians will be asked to attend and help with raising awareness. Rotaract and Interact will be involved as well.

More info to follow as the District PR committee fleshes out the events, but set aside some time that day if you can to help out.

Members are reminded that to participate in Club events involving the vulnerable sector (youth, seniors, etc) they must obtain clearance from the Calgary Police Service.

Fran Hauchhausen has the forms to be completed, and will also require copies (front and back) of two pieces of Government issued ID.

Members who signed up to be mentors at Fairview School starting this fall will have to get a separate clearance for that (yes, a duplication). This has to be done through the school itself, and Patricia Garner will be able to advise on the needed procedures..

There will be a multi-club meeting on November 11th to recognize Remembrance Day. It will be held at the

Carriage House starting at 10:00am.

Major Jamie Miller will be the speaker. A sit down meal will be provided at noon.

Cost for the event will be $25.00 and tickets will be sold in advance.
