Hazelwood Dr. Urbana, IL 61802 [email protected] Dr. Brian Aldridge graduated from the University of Liverpool in July, 1984. After graduating he completed an internship in food animal medicine and surgery at Louisiana State University before returning to general practice in the UK. Following a two-year stint as a lecturer in large animal medicine at the Royal Dick School of Veterinary Studies in Edinburgh, Dr. Aldridge completed a food animal medicine and surgery residency and MS at Colorado State University and achieved Diplomate status in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. After another period in general practice he then enrolled in a PhD program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, examining the transfer of colostral leukocytes to the newborn calf. On completion of his graduate studies in 1999, Brian worked as a post-doctoral scientist in the Department of Pathology, Microbiology, and Immunology at the University of California-Davis and in association with the Marine Mammal Centre, Sausalito, studying marine mammal immunology and immunogenetics. During this period he also worked as a large animal clinician in the UC Davis Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Brian joined the founding faculty of the Western University of Health Sciences College of Veterinary Medicine as an associate professor of large animal medicine and an adjunct professor at the California State Polytechnic University College of Agriculture in 2003. Dr. Aldridge returned with his family to the UK in 2005 where he held the post of professor of farm animal health and production at the Royal Veterinary College, and then worked as farm animal clinician at the University of Cambridge. He now works as a clinical professor in rural animal health management at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Aldridge’s main clinical interests are in farm animal medicine and the interface between health and production in growing animals. His primary research interests are in adaptive and transitional health in young animals. He also has a strong enthusiasm for teaching and learning, particularly as it relates to the advancement of animal health, welfare, and production globally. Matthew C. Allender, DVM, PhD, MS Diplomate, ACZM Clinical Assistant Professor Department of Comparative Biosciences University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign College of Veterinary Medicine 2001 S. Lincoln Ave. Urbana, IL 61802 [email protected] Dr. Matt Allender is a 2004 DVM graduate from University of Illinois. He went into small animal practice for two years while completing a MS in epidemiology of free-ranging reptiles. He then completed a residency in zoological medicine at the University of Tennessee/Knoxville Zoo. Dr. Allender returned to the University of Illinois as a visiting instructor and PhD in epidemiology. Currently he teaches and performs research on captive and free-ranging wildlife.

Dr. Karen Campbell received her DVM from the University of Missouri. She completed a small animal rotating internship at Auburn University and then a small animal internal medicine residency and MS in clinical pathology from the University of Georgia. She completed her dermatology residency at the University of Illinois, where she currently serves as the Head of Dermatology and Department Head for Veterinary Clinical Medicine. Dr. Campbell is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Small Animal) and the American College of Veterinary Dermatology. mixed animal clinical practice in central Illinois. In July 1989, Dr. Ernst accepted a position with the Illinois Department of Agriculture Bureau of Animal Health as a field veterinarian in northern and central Illinois. As a field veterinarian, he was responsible for all regulatory animal health activities in his assigned area. While employed as a field veterinarian, he was further trained as a Foreign Animal Disease Diagnostician (FADD) at the Plum Island Animal Disease Center in New York. As a FADD, Dr. Ernst performed foreign animal disease investigations when suspicious cases were reported to the department. In 2003 he was temporarily assigned to the office as the acting assistant bureau chief for animal health. He held that position until January 2005 when he was appointed state veterinarian and bureau chief for the Bureau of Animal Health and Welfare. She received board certification in 2008 and was in private practice until April of 2013 when she joined the University of Illinois faculty. Her presentation this year will focus on recent advances in the use of local anesthetics for regional anesthesia and analgesia in horses. It will provide the practitioner with an in-depth background into local anesthetic pharmacology, current uses, and a brief look towards the future of local anesthetic use in equine patients. Ryan C. Dr. Ryan Fries is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Cardiology in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Medicine. He received his DVM from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in 2007 after completing his clinical rotations at Washington State University. Dr. Fries completed a small animal medicine and surgery internship at The Ohio State University and a cardiology residency at Texas A&M University. He became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Cardiology) in 2012. Upon completion of his residency, Dr. Fries worked as a staff cardiologist in a private referral practice in Cincinnati, OH. Most recently, Dr. Fries was a Clinical Assistant Professor of Cardiology at Texas A&M

She did a one-year rotating internship at the University of Minnesota and then worked in a private referral practice in the twin cities for two years. She next completed a two-year residency in comparative oncology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, after which she spent 1-1/2 years at a referral practice in New Zealand. She then helped to begin and build an oncology program at Kansas State University from 1998-2006. In June 2006 she joined the faculty here at her alma mater. Dr. Garrett's main interests include teaching and clinical service, with research interests that focus on clinical trials of new anticancer agents. Santiago D. She was in a mixed animal practice until 2007 when she and her family moved back to central Illinois from Baton Rouge, LA. She’s taught for many years at the local, state and national level to wildlife rehabilitators. She started at the Clinical Skills Learning Center here at the University of Illinois in 2010. She teaches clinical skills to 1st – 3rd year veterinary students as part of the “new curriculum”. Ralph E. She then went in to private practice in Oregon where she worked in a mixed and exotic animal practice. She became a public health veterinarian for USDA-FSIS in 2001 where she spent time as an ante-mortem veterinarian and an inspector-in-charge. While employed by FSIS she was asked to be a mentor for the agency. In 2008, she became a field veterinary medical officer for USDA-APHIS, Veterinary Services, where she performs disease surveillance and investigates cases of possible foreign animal disease. She also oversees the National Veterinary Accreditation Program in Illinois. Her close proximity to the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine allows her to operate as a liaison between the college and USDA. She now collaborates with the University and is the course coordinator for the regulatory medicine rotation being offered to second-year veterinary students.

Christine N. Hoang, DVM, MPH, CPH Assistant Director of the Division of Scientific Activities American Veterinary Medical Association 1931 N. Meacham Road, #100 Schaumburg, IL 60173 [email protected] Christine Hoang, DVM, MPH, CPH, Assistant Director of the Scientific Activities Division of the American Veterinary Medical Association, received both her DVM and MPH through the University of Minnesota's dual degree program and is additionally certified in public health by the National Board of Public Health Examiners. At the AVMA, Dr. Hoang’s work focuses on providing technical and scientific expertise for policy development, advocacy, and regulatory and legislative initiatives for advancement of the veterinary profession. Her key areas include public health and food safety, as well as zoonotic disease and antimicrobial resistance. Dr. Hoang has dedicated her professional career to the advancement of food safety as well as the roles of veterinarians and the profession in promoting evidence-based national and international food safety policies and programs. In recognition of her dedication, outstanding service and accomplishments in food safety nationally and globally, Dr. Christine Hoang has been selected as the 2013 recipient of the Food Safety Veterinarian .of the year award. In addition, Dr. Hoang has been and remains involved in the Association's efforts to combat antimicrobial resistance and promote animal health and well-being including the latest AVMA Task Force for Antimicrobial Stewardship in Companion Animal Practice; AVMA's innovative Steering Committee for FDA policy on Veterinary Oversight of Antimicrobials; revisions to AVMA's Judicious Use of Therapeutic Antimicrobials Guidelines; the Antimicrobial Use Task Force; cooperative efforts with government regulatory agencies, allied organizations, and other stakeholders on issues such as the Food and Drug Administration's ban on extra-label use of cephalosporins, initiative to increase veterinary oversight, and the Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD); and several Congressional testimonies on advancements in animal health, antimicrobial resistance, and the use of antimicrobials in veterinary medicine. Dr. Hoang has also recently been active educating veterinary students, producers, and even traveling internationally to expand on the role of veterinarians in these key areas. Since at the AVMA, she has served on the planning committee for the International Conference on Emerging Infectious Diseases, the Board of Directors and several committees of the US Animal Health Association, and participated on behalf of the AVMA as a part of the US delegation to the Codex Task Force on Antimicrobial Resistance. Since graduation he has been working with swine production companies across the United States. Dr. Lowe completed the Executive Veterinary Program at the University of Illinois in 2000 and returned to campus in 2002 while continuing to practice full-time. In 2005, he received a Master of Science degree in infectious disease management. He has maintained an active research program since completing his masters focusing on the management of viral respiratory disease in swine production systems. In 2012, he became board certified in food animal practice by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners. After three years in mixed practice, from 1997 until 2003 he was a co-owner of Professional Swine Management, LLC, and Carthage Veterinary Service, Ltd., in Carthage, Illinois. In 2003, Dr. Lowe joined The Maschhoffs, Inc. in Carlyle, Illinois, as its Director of Health and Production Services. The Maschhoffs, Inc., is one of the ten largest pork producers in North America and Dr. Lowe led its breed-to-wean business and the health services group while the company expanded from 25,000 to 110,000 sows. Dr. Lowe returned to private practice in 2007 while continuing to work with the Maschhoffs, LLC. In 2009, Dr. Lowe accepted a part-time appointment to the faculty of the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Illinois where he teaches veterinary students production medicine. Dr. McKiernan's responsibilities included teaching in all years of the veterinary professional curriculum, in house veterinary technician training, house officer training (over 275 interns, residents and graduate students), research and clinical service. Founder (1978) and first President (1978-1985) of the Veterinary Comparative Respiratory Society, he is best known for his research, numerous publications, clinical expertise and frequent seminars on respiratory problems in companion animals. Dr. McKiernan moved to Denver, CO in 1998 where he joined the Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital as staff internist with the Wheat Ridge Veterinary Specialists, a full service general, emergency and specialty referral practice (staff total- 130). In 2007 Dr. McKiernan became a partner in the Southern Oregon Veterinary Specialty Clinic in Medford, Oregon and served as the Staff Internist. During these years he also was an Affiliate Faculty member of the College of Veterinary Medicine, Colorado State University while continuing his research and clinical work in Internal Medicine and specifically on respiratory problems in dogs and cats. He was involved in house officer training programs in both practices and continued to present scientific lectures at local, national as well as international meetings. In 2011 Dr. McKiernan was recruited back to his roots at the University and to be closer to his extended family in the Midwest. He was a Professor of Small Animal Medicine and Directory of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital until his retirement in May, 2015. He will return as an Emeritus Professor to provide his expertise in the VTH.
