WELCOME FROM THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE CO-CHAIRS

Dear Colleague,

As conference co-chairs, and on behalf of the Conference Executive and Technical Programme Committees, we thank you for attending the SPE Annual Caspian Technical Conference and Exhibition.

This year’s conference theme “Chasing the Margins” will focus on the current market conditions facing the oil and gas industry, both globally and on a local level, and the ways in which our industry should respond. The velocity and magnitude of price volatility has pushed the industry to shift focus from “chasing barrels” towards “chasing effi ciency” to enhance the value of the ultimate products. The modernisation of the industry, the collaboration between oil and gas operators, contractors, service providers and governments, and a new approach on local content in running businesses have played a role in effi ciency improvement and adaptation to new realities. We believe every one of us has a role to play in helping our industry become more sustainable and value-adding, and therefore your active participation is important.

The conference theme will be explored further in the three keynote panel sessions – Modernisation, Localisation and Collaboration. In these sessions, you will hear from high-profi le speakers and panellists drawn from government, operators, service providers, advisory fi rms, and energy research companies.

Twelve technical and several knowledge sharing poster sessions will encompass presentations across a range of technical topics. These presentations will off er the opportunity to share knowledge in an open and constructive environment.

We hope that you take the opportunity to meet and network with old and new colleagues, discover new technologies and insights into the industry, engage in the debate, and share your experiences.

The energy industry, characterised as both capitally intensive and requiring robust risk management, has historically been relatively slow to accept new technology and ways of working. Major projects, typically with long procurement and engineering lead times, frequently bias towards proven technology and designs. Key contractors are inclined to deploy existing tools to minimise capital expenditure on equipment upgrades. High entry costs, particularly against the backdrop of geographic and market constraints, can result in limited competition. High commodity prices can make good performance ‘good enough.’ Low commodity prices, however, change the game entirely. What will it take for our industry to leverage the accelerating and compounding capabilities of digital technologies, data analytics, improved sensors, geotagging technology, autonomous systems, and compute power? What are the changes in mindset that need to accompany an improved toolbox?

Modern programmes on ‘Localisation’ are very much the driving force behind the development of a country’s local talent and associated industries. It is a necessary advancement to ensure countries build on their historical oil and gas experience, mapping long lasting success by investing in local infrastructures and capability and establishing modern universities with curricula that meet international standards. The Caspian countries are already seeing benefits from their past programmes of educating students overseas and having them gain experience in international companies, then bringing these learnings and best practices back to their home industries. Now work needs to continue with producing internationally recognised courses at the leading Caspian universities and producing field ready engineers.

The Caspian countries, in particular Azerbaijan, have been at the forefront of developing its local manufacturing and supply chain industries by bridging Asia and Europe and closing the technology gap. This has created a stable and mutually beneficial working relationship between the international and local firms and provides a sustainable market place and future favourable

conditions for foreign investors to work in an alliance with local companies.

This panel will examine and discuss shared experiences to show what has been achieved and the areas that need to be addressed to be able to move to the next level of collaborative full value chain ‘Localisation’.

09 Well Stimulation and Zonal Isolations

SESSION CHAIRS: Ehtiram Azizov, BP Luis Daniel Pinero, Baker Hughes

Production and supporting its injection can be enhanced in many ways. In some it is achieved with stimulation of the interval, in others it could be isolation of zones and subzones with excessive water or gas production. There is a choice of mechanical versus chemical isolations techniques in this area. There are associated challenges starting from accurate identifi cation of water, gas entry zones, their complete isolation to designed diversion of stimulation treatment to avoid high productivity/injectivity intervals in order to maximise job effi ciency. Come to the session and hear from experiences gained in chemical gas shut off , diversion agents and acid stimulations from the Caspian region.

12 Risk and Uncertainty Management and Decision Making

SESSION CHAIRS: Diana Shigapova, Roxar Ali Sheydayev, BP

Decision making is a key step at any stage of the reservoir life cycle from exploration to asset development strategies and investment evaluation. Competitive prices for energy resources, complexity of reservoir structure and challenges in field development might lead to the fact that decision making involves a wide range of uncertainties and high risks for delivery of projects. In addition, taking into account the close linkage to the profitability of projects, the errors made in ultimate decisions could be extremely costly for field operators.

This session will feature some potential solutions for risk and uncertainty management based on real field cases. It will discuss a new assessment tool for value of decision-relevant information, comprehensive approaches to the risk evaluation while dealing with an offshore greenfield project and how to narrow the range of uncertainties for correct well planning and construction.
