Congratulations to students who had performances in December! You did an

outstanding job.

The 7th and 8th grade Jazz Band I and 7th and 8th grade Orchestra students

will have a performance when we return from break for our annual Martin Lu-

ther King, Jr. Assembly. This will be held Friday, January 13 at 9:15 am in the

Gym. Students will need to wear their black and white concert clothing to

school that day. Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend this wonderful

tribute to Dr. King.

Students who choose to participate in our regional Solo and Small Ensemble

Festival will be busily preparing their music during the month of January. The

festival will be held Saturday, February 4th at LMS. This is a great opportunity

for students to perform for an adjudicator who specializes in their instrumental

area.

Mr. Covill will be talking with select students when we return from break

about participating in Jazz Band II. This ensemble will rehearse on Mondays

and Wednesdays and will perform for the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival later

in February, along with Jazz Band I.

Congratulations Drama Club on great “Small Group Scene” performances! Early in October, Drama Club students se-

lected small group scenes and prepared them for their performance December 8th. Actors worked on script memoriza-

tion, character development, blocking, and voice inflection and tone. Each performance group was responsible for

deciding on their hand props and set design. Students working behind-the-scenes met with actors for production notes

on hand props, costumes, lighting, and set furniture. Way to go Drama Club!

Drama Club has now begun work on a large group production of “The Ice Wolf”. Watch for a performance date in

the February newsletter.

Happy New Year from the LMS library! I want to start by thanking the LMS Boosters for all of the hard work that they put into the

Scholastic Book Fair and all of you for supporting the fair. Not only were students able to buy

books, but because of the great success of this fair, the LMS library gained almost 90 books and

classroom teachers received around 50 new books. We have a wonderful collection that is great-

ly enhanced every year in large part due to these sales.

I continue to make changes to the library as I am figuring out how to best accommodate the

needs of all of our students and faculty. I highly encourage you and your students to talk to me

or email me with suggestions or comments or concerns for and about the library.

Thank you for sharing your amazing students and have a wonderful year!

Ms. Coke Sutton

GENERAL LIBRARY INFORMATION:

The library is open from 8:15am-3:45pm Monday through Friday.

Every Thursday students from WSU are in the library to tutor LMS students. This is a wonder-

ful opportunity for all students to work on class assignments, get assistance if they are behind,

and to connect with college students.

I am here after school each day to assist students with assignments. Feel free to contact me if

there is anything in particular that you want me to help your student with.

We have computers, chromebooks and a printer available for student use.

BORROWING MATERIALS:

Students may check out books at any time throughout the day including lunch and before and

after school.

Students may check out five items at a time.

Check-out periods last for two weeks. We don’t have late fees, but please encourage your stu-

dents to turn their books in on time.

Books may be renewed an unlimited number of times (as long as another student has not re-

served the book).

Students may also reserve books that are currently out by talking with me.

I greatly enjoy helping students to find books that they will enjoy. Please encourage students to

talk to me if they believe that they just don’t like reading or if they are stuck in a rut reading

only one type of book. The library is very busy during lunch, but before school, after school, or

if they have some extra time during class and their teacher approves, I can spend time individu-

ally with students to find works that best suit them.

CHOIR NEWS

Wonderful December performances for our Pullman community LMS Jazz Choir, 6th Grade Choirs, 7th/8th Grade Concert Choir and Spartan Voices! Early in December the LMS Jazz Choir and Spartan Voices did a great job performing at the Kiwanis Pancake Feed and the Pullman Holiday Festival and Tree Lighting, two annual events that bring our community together. Then, just before winter break, all LMS choirs performed at area retirement communities. Residents at Regency of Pullman and Bishop Place commented on how much they enjoyed watching and listening to the students perform. The group sing-a-long at the end of each perfor-mance is always the most memorable, and during the sing-a-long students handed out cards they had made for the residents. Finally, LMS choir students had the opportunity to go caroling. The carolers were well received by residents of Pioneer Hill. Thank you to those students who were able to participate in this fun, traditional event. Now with the New Year there are many new performance opportunities for our LMS choir stu-dents:

7th & 8th Grade Concert Choir will be busy during the first part of January preparing music for the Martin Luther King Jr. Assembly. This is another great LMS assembly pro-duced by the LMS Leadership, Band, Choir, and Orchestra classes.

Jazz Choir will perform Monday, January 30th at the South East Washington Music Educator Association’s Bill Bolick Jazz Night. This event takes place at Kimbrough Con-cert Hall on the WSU campus. Spartan Voices and 7th & 8th Grade Concert Choir members will be preparing for solo and small group performances at the annual South East Washington Music Educator As-sociation's Solo/Small Ensemble Festival on Saturday, February 4th. This year’s festi-val will be held in Pullman at Lincoln Middle School. Students will perform for a judge and small audience in order to receive a rating based on specific vocal/choral performance criteria. They will also have the opportunity to work personally with the judge following their perfor-mance. All soloists/small groups will work at lunch time and/or afterschool with Mrs. James, as well as put in several hours of additional rehearsal time on their own in preparation for this event.

Practice Tips:

Sing through a solfege scale forward and backward.

Practice singing solfege intervals by skipping over tones and syllables. Monitor your performance technique by watching your singing in a mirror - look for low jaw, raised cheek muscles/eyebrows, a rounded/oval mouth shape, and a low breath.

Upcoming Events: 7th & 8th Grade Concert Choir: Martin Luther King Jr. Assembly - Friday, January 13th – LMS Jazz Choir: SEWMEA Bill Bolick Jazz Night – Monday, January 30th, time TBA – Kimbrough Concert Hall, WSU Spartan Voices and Choir members: SEWMEA Solo/Small Ensemble Festival - Saturday, February 4th, all day, Pullman - LMS
