Living in Sparta• Sparta was the opposite of Athens.• Spartans were harsh, tough, silent and grim. • Inside and outside wars led to a change in

government and living.• Spartans because powerful war machines.• Always the city´s need above your own.• Turned the people conquered into helots.• Helots did farm labor on Spartan citizens land.• Because there were more helots than Spartans,

turned the city into a military society.

Boys Growing up in Sparta

• Government control life from an early age.• Examine newborn infants and the sick babies were

left to die.• At the age of 7 boys left to barracks for military

training. • Age of 12 boys practiced with swords and spears. • Miserable life, no food, one cloak and a thin mat.• Stealing for leaving.• If caught, punishment or killing was the penalty.

Girls Growing up in Sparta

• Girls trains and compete in wrestling and spear throwing.

• Spartans believed that girls who grew up strong and healthy would have strong and healthy children.

• Women in Sparta had more freedom than in Greece.

• Women own land and take part in business.

The Persian Invade

• Mid 500s B.C. Cyrus the Great founded the Persian Empire.

• 520 B.C. Persian gained control on Greek Colonies on the west coast of Asia Minor.

• 490 B.C. Persians landed at the North of Athens. The Persians outnumbered.

• For several days they fought across the plain of Marathon.

• Without warning the Athenians rushed the Persians and killed 6,400 and drove the Persians away.

Conflict and the Athenian Empire

• After the Persians were defeated, Athens allied with other city-states.

• Athens was democratics but began to traet its allied infairly.

• Allies paid tribute to Athens for protection.• Athens used this money for buildings and

other proyects.• City-states began to resent Athens power.

• Allies of Sparta and Athens fought for 27 years in the Peloponnesian War in the southern Greek peninsula.

• Athens was struck by a plague and 1/3 of Athens population died.

• In 405 B.C. the Spartans staged a blockade closing the harbor where Athens recieved food and shipments causing them to surrendered because of famine.
