Language will be used through communicative activities; however, no previous knowledge of Catalan language is required. The class will discuss issues of relevance to Catalan culture and history. The course will explore the ways social relations, practices, and knowledge are inscribed on the body through its photographic representation in different contexts (art, anthropology, journalism, medicine, amateur, tourism). From the nude to the selfie, the course will analyze different examples of photography from Latin America to explore the relationship between the body, photography, and power in post-independence Latin America in order to consider the ways in which photography was used as a tool to establish national, racial, and cultural identities.
