¡El roedor más grande del mundo puede andar con correa y subir escaleras!
¿Qué es eso?... ¿Una rata gigante o un castor? ¡Para nada! Es un capibara. El capibara es el roedor más grande del mundo.
Los roedores son un grupo de animales. Las ardillas, los hámsteres y las ratas son roedores. El capibara es el animal más grande de este grupo. Vive en Venezuela, un país de América del Sur.
Los capibaras tienen dientes frontales largos. Estos dientes siempre crecen. Tienen un recubrimiento especial. Hace que los dientes sean muy fuertes. Los capibaras los usan para mordisquear constantemente.
Cuerpos pesados
El capibara tiene orejas cortas. Tiene una nariz grande y plana. Sus patas delanteras son más cortas que las traseras. La piel del capibara es muy dura. Su cuerpo es pesado, para ser roedor. Un capibara puede pesar hasta 150 libras.
Los roedores como los ratones se meten a las casas. Se arrastran por los rincones oscuros. Se quedan escondidos sin hacer ruido.
¿Puede imaginar a un capibara haciendo eso? ¡Un animal tan grande no sería tan escurridizo! Eso es algo bueno para la gente de Venezuela. No necesitan preocuparse de que los capibaras se metan a sus casas. Ellos prefieren vivir afuera. Se mantienen cerca del agua.
Buenos nadadores
Algunos animales cazan capibaras. Los jaguares y las águilas son dos de ellos. Estos animales atacan a los capibaras si los ven. Por eso, los capibaras buscan el agua. Son muy buenos nadadores. Sus patas palmeadas los ayudan a remar.
Si un enemigo se acerca, el capibara salta al agua. Nada para alejarse. Los capibaras pueden esconderse en el agua durante mucho tiempo. Incluso se quedan dormidos bajo el agua. ¡Solo se ve su nariz sobre la superficie!
A los capibaras les gustan las ciénagas. Muchos viven cerca de pantanos o de lagos. Se refrescan en el lodo. Comen plantas acuáticas.
Sus hogares desaparecen
Actualmente, en Venezuela están secando las ciénagas. Están convirtiéndolas en tierras de cultivo. Los capibaras no pueden vivir en las tierras de cultivo.
Algunos rancheros crían capibaras. Lo hacen como otros ganaderos crían vacas. Estos capibaras se venden como carne. Los usan para preparar guisos.
Pero no todos los venezolanos quieren comer capibara. Algunos piensan que son mejores como mascotas.
Los capibaras son ingeniosos
Los capibaras son ingeniosos. Pueden aprender trucos, al igual que los perros. Pueden aprender a pedir comida. Los capibaras caminan con una correa. También pueden subir escaleras.
Los capibaras se alimentan sanamente. Solo comen plantas. Sus favoritas son la lechuga, los granos y la fruta. También les gusta mucho las sobras como las semillas y las cáscaras. La gente suele tirar estas partes. No es tan caro alimentar a un capibara.
