Introduction to I4IS - 2

The Institute for Interstellar Studies (I4IS)

was established on 14 September 2012.

I4IS seeks to become a nexus for activities

and related to the challenges of achieving

robotic and human interstellar flight.

Between 1974 and 1991

the Journal of the British

Interplanetary Society

produced a series of special

red cover issues on

Interstellar Studies.

A BIS team also performed

the Daedalus study.

Daedalus was a robotstarship designed toconduct a flyby ofBarnards Star (about 6

light years away).

Top speed was 12% of thespeed of light.

Flight time was 45 years.

Propulsion was bydeuterium/helium-3 fusion.

I4IS aims to make a constructive contributions towards

the ultimate goal of interstellar flight.

We strive to balance visionary inspiration with scientific

rigour so that we can perform the R&D necessary to

execute the strategic and technical roadmap ahead.

We seek to work co-operatively with other organizations

and from early 2013 we will be open to collaborating on

joint programs.

In the meantime, please contact us if you are interested

in taking part in our activities individually.
