Manned Spaceflight

Manned spaceflight, or human Spaceflight, is the flight of a human crew and passengers into space.

The first human flight into space was made by Yuri Gagarin on April 12, 1961.

The space craft orbited the earth for 1 hour and 48 minutes.

The United States soon followed by sending Alan Shepard into space on May 5, 1961.Alexy Leonov

Famous Human Spaceflights

Apollo 8 – Although not as famous as it’s following flights, they would not

have been possible without this one. It was the first flight to orbit the moon.

Apollo 11 – The first human flight to the moon was

accomplished on July 20, 1969 by Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong and Michael

Collins.

Current Human Space Exploration

On February 24, 2011 the space shuttle Discovery launched it’s final flight after 27 years of flights. It spent 11 days in orbit.

Space TourismIn recent years there has been a movement for the commercialization of space

The Russian Space Agency is the only institution allowing for commercial space travel

Space tourists often aid in research of the Hubble Space Telescope

It will cost you between $20-35 million to travel into space.

Space ProbesSpace probes are used for scientific missions in

interplanetary or interstellar space.Probes have been sent to Mars, Venus and as far

as Saturn.

Important Space ProbesVenera 7

The first man made probe to successfully land on another planet, Venus, to transmit information back to earth.

Spirit and Opportunity

Two probes on Mars. They were sent to observe the surface of mars and look for past water activity on the surface.

Important Space Probes

Voyager ILaunched on September 5, 1977, it is the longest lasting space mission NASA ever launched. It has reached as far as Saturn and is still operationalIt has given us some of the most detailed pictures of Jupiter’s and Saturn’s moons.Image of Saturn’s moons taken by Voyager I

Discoveries Made by Space

ProbesThe Huygens probe, named after the 17th

century Dutch astronomer, landed

successfully on Titan on January 14, 2005.It was supposed that the dark spots on the surface of the moon were bodies of water but they were in fact dry. This is still being

studied.Huygens’ Landing Site

SatellitesThe type of satellites spoken about here are

artificial. Natural satellites are things like moons that are in orbit around a larger body.

History of Satellites

The first successful satellite, Sputnik I, was launched by the Soviet Union in 1957.

Since then, thousands of satellites have orbited around the earth.

They are used for many things like military observation and civilian communication.

Important Satellites

By far, one of the most important satellites is the International Space Station.

The International Space station acts as an in-space laboratory, observatory and a staging base for future missions.

The space station is still under construction and is due to be finished between 2015-2020.

The Future of Space

Exploration

Plans for future space exploration include:• Commercializing

the international space station.

• Send crew exploration vehicles beyond the moon.

• Only time will tell what the future holds!
