Radiation in General Radiation in general can be defined as energy in

transit in the form of high-speed particles and electromagnetic waves.

Radiation can be divided into the following categories in terms of its effect on the matter: Ionizing (UV, X and γ-rays <electromagnetic-radiation>,

protons, neutrons and heavier highly energetic particles .) Non ionizing (microwaves, radio waves, and visible light.)

What on earth is space radiation?

Space Radiation

Cosmic RaysMainly protons

Energies up to 1021eV

Solar RadiationTrapped particle

Radiationprotons & e-

Energy: Mev-GeV

ElectromagneticRadio to X-rays

Particulate

Low energyMainly protons & e-

Energy: Mev-GeV

High EnergyProtons & a’s

Energy: MeV-TeV

Cosmic Rays Discovered in 1912 by

the Austrian Victor Francis Hess but their origin remains an unsolved mystery until now!

Trapped Radiation

Solar Radiation Solar particle events are injections of energetic

electrons, protons, alpha particles, and heavier particles into interplanetary space.

The solar wind contains ions from almost every element in the periodic table; however, it consists primarily of protons and electrons.

Why is space radiation harmful?

Type of Damage Prospects for DNA Repair

Single strand break in the DNA

Can usually be repaired and normal cell function restored

Breaks in both DNA strands

Usually damage is to severe for repair. The cell dies.

Chemical change or mutation

Cannot be repaired. Cancer may result or a mutated offspring if this occurs in a sperm or egg cell
