Description
As part of the comprehensive FIREPRO® range of fire protection products, ROCKWOOL SP Firestop Slab is a product specifically designed to form cavity fire stops within buildings.
It may be installed horizontally or vertically and is suitable for cavity widths between 50mm and 400mm, in both masonry and curtain wall constructions.
NB: For cavity widths of 250mm or more, jointsbetween adjacent lengths of firestops should besealed on the top surface with aluminium foil tape.The product has been designed as a one-piece system and allows easy cutting and installation. It provides a unique lateral compression to facilitate tightness of fit.
The product is available in two versions:SP 60 Slab, provides 1 hour fire resistance.SP 120 Slab, provides 2 hours fire resistance.

Accessories
ROCKWOOLSPFixingBrackets*arerequiredfortheinstallation(figureB).Theyaresuppliedintwostandardtypes,namelySP/SFixingBracketdesignedforcavitiesupto,andincluding100mmwideandSP/LFixingBracketforcavitiesover100mmandupto400mmwide.
Bracketsaresuppliedincardboardboxes,flatpacked,andaredesignedtobeeasilyre-profiledbyhandonsite.TheSPFixingBracketsshouldbecutonsiteasnecessarytoallowatleast75%penetrationoftheFirestop.
*Pleasenote:Inordertocomplywiththefiretestcertification,onlyROCKWOOLSPFixingBracketsshouldbeusedtoinstalltheproduct.

ROCKWOOLSP60andSP120FirestopSlabshavebeentestedandassessedinaccordancewithBS476:Part20:1987andhaveachieved60minutesand120minutesrespectivelyforbothintegrityandinsulation,asdetailedinLPCassessmentCC89697.
ROCKWOOLSP60andSP120FirestopSlabscomplywiththeprovisionsofApprovedDocumentB3ofthe1991buildingRegulations(2002edition).

FireThebasemineralwoolofROCKWOOLSP60andSP120FirestopSlabsisinherentlyfiresafeandachievesEuroClassA1.ROCKWOOLproductswillwithstandtemperaturesofupto1000°Cwithoutmelting.
AcousticROCKWOOLproductshaveexcellentacousticproperties,andcansignificantlyreducethelevelsofairbornesoundtransmissionthroughwallandfloorcavities.
Resistance to moistureROCKWOOLSP60andSP120FirestopSlabsarewaterrepellentandunaffectedbythefreeze/thawcycle.
Applications
Fireresistancebetweentheedgeofaconcretefloorslabandcurtainwallingwhichisstableinfire.
ROCKWOOL®SP60andSP120FirestopSlabsprovideoneandtwohoursfireresistancerespectivelyinvoidsupto400mmwide.

Figure5illustratestypicalapplications,withtheproductfittedtightlybetweenmasonryleaves.Whenitisnotpossibletobuildthebracketsintoaleaf,thefixingscanbere-profiledasnecessaryandmechanicallyfixedtothefaceofthemasonry.
TheapplicationofROCKWOOLSPFirestopSlabsistheresponsibilityofthesiteoperator.Fixingsequenceinstructionsareshownclearlyoneachpackaswellascuttingguidelinesonthesurfaceofeachslab.
External claddingWhereusedinconjunctionwithprofiledmetalcladding,cuttheROCKWOOL®SPFirestopSlabtosuittheprofile.

ROCKWOOLSPFirestopSlabsaredesignedforcuttingonsitewithasharpknifeorsawandastraightedge.ThecavitytobefirestoppedshouldbemeasuredandtheROCKWOOLSPFirestopSlabcuttosuitthisdimension,usingonepieceonlypergapwidth–seeFigures4and5.
Foreasycompressionfittingandtoaccommodatethefixingpattern,cuttingshouldbealongthe1000mmwidthasindicatedinfigure1.
TheSPFixingBracketsarethenre-profiledbyhandandcutasnecessarytoallowatleast75%penetrationofthefirestopmaterial.
Theyshouldbeplacedasshowninthediagrams,orfixedbyothersuitablemechanicalmeans.

Theproductshouldthenbefittedsecurelyintothevoid,andtightlybuttedtotheadjacentROCKWOOLSPFirestopSlab.
OncetheROCKWOOLSPFirestopSlabhasbeenaccuratelyfitted,theSPFixingBracketsmustthenbemechanicallyfixedtotheedgeofthefloorslabwithmetalfixingssuitableformasonry.

Aftersuitablyre-profilingtheSPFixingBrackets,theycanbebuiltintothebedjointsoftheinternalleafat500mm±10mmcentres.Alternatively,theSPFixingBracketsmaybere-profiledbyhandintoan‘L’shapeandmechanicallyfixedtothefaceoftheinnerleaf.
TheROCKWOOLSPFirestopSlabisthenimpaledontotheSPFixingBracketafterthenextliftofinnerleafmasonry.
Workonbothleavescanthenbecontinuedandmustincludeeitheraverticaldampproofcourseoracavitytray,installedovertheROCKWOOLSPFirestopSlabasshowninFigure5.

Curtainwallingsystemsaremanufacturedfromawiderangeofmaterialswhichreactdifferentlyinfire.LargescaleindependentUKinvestigationshaveshownthatsomeglazedoraluminiumexternalcladdingsystemsareliabletointegrityfailureunderattack,withinshortperiodsoftime-5and20minutesrespectively.
Steelfacedcompositepanelsfilledwithcombustibleinsulationcanbeunstableunderfireattack.Curtainwallingsystemsincorporatingfire-sensitivepanelsmaysufferseveremovementandbuckling,resultingingapsformingbetweenthepanelandtheROCKWOOLSPFireStopSlab.
