Approved SIGNATURES ON FILEDate

1.0 SCOPE

This guide covers the selection and design of hangers and supports for process and utility piping. This guide does not apply to clean room areas.

2.0 REFERENCES

Pipe hangers and supports, materials and design shall be in accordance with MSS StandardPractices SP-58, SP-69, SP-89 and SP-90 and also conform to the latest requirements of the ANSIcode for Pressure Piping B31.1 and Chemical, Petroleum Piping B31.3.

3.0 GENERAL

3.1 Temperature for the hangers and supports per this guide, except when otherwise specifiedor permitted, shall be within the pipe line fluid temperatures of -20° to +750° F. The partsof hangers and support in direct contact with the pipe shall be considered to be at thetemperature of the pipe line fluid. Parts not in direct contact with the pipe or entirelyoutside of any insulation may be considered to be at 1/3 of the pipe line fluid or at ambienttemperature, whichever is greater.

3.2 Hanger and Support Loads as follows shall be used in determining the weight to besupported or the forces to be resisted:

3.2.1 Weight Effects:

Dead Load - Weight of all permanent loads (pipe, valves, insulation, etc.)Live Load - Weight of the conveyed fluid including snow and ice where

applicable.Test Load - Weight of test fluid. For fluids lighter than water, the weight of

water shall be used.

3.2.2 Dynamic Effects

Impact forces, shall include vibration, and the greater of either, wind or earthquakeforces. The weight or forces to be taken by the hangers and supports shall be themost severe combination of weight and dynamic effects. Under no circumstancesshall the spacing specified for carbon steel pipe or maximum loads specified hereinbe exceeded. When necessary, the effect of the weight and dynamic forces

(particularly on laboratory buildings) on the supporting structure (building steel, etc.) shall receive consideration. Where vibration is deemed to be of particularconcern, Grinnell Series 300 Springloaded hangers shall be used.

3.2.3 Slide Surfaces

All piping supports and guides having steel to steel sliding surfaces shall haveliberal coating of graphite paste applied during installation. Where pipe supportsor guides rest on concrete, sliding contact shall be achieved by imbedding a slideplate in the concrete and lubricating as above. Sliding contact between concreteand steel is prohibited.

3.3 Materials

Hangers, spacers, small plates, lugs, etc. may be commercial quality carbon steel providedthese items are not subjected to temperatures over 650°F. Grinnell Co. materials areconsidered as being a representative of the required quality. The use of other suppliers'materials of equal quality shall be considered. Grinnell figure numbers are used in allfollowing pages of this guide. Note that where copper lines are installed, either copperhangers or plastic tape-lined steel hangers shall be used.

4.0 USE OF THE GUIDE

4.1 Procedure

4.1.1 Using the PH, PA, PG or PS number corresponding to the hanger or supportselected, reference shall be made to pages 4-28 for recommendations.

4.1.2 Details are shown to cover the majority of installations. If a situation arises whichis not covered by the guide, consult with the Central Engineering Piping Group.

4.1.3 The General Notes on page 6 apply to all details where welding issued.

TO BE SUPPORTED ON SADDLE AND 4” ABOVE THE STEEL TO INCREASE TO 24’-6” IF PIPE IS SUPPORTED ON SHOE

The above spans are limited to: 1) Maximum deflection of 3/8” 2) Maximum bending stress at mid span of3000 PSI

3) Maximum bending stress at saddle 4) Maximum hoop stress of 9000 PSI.of 1000 PSI Due to line reaction at the support.

NOTE: Spans shall be shortened as necessary to compensate for concentrated loads such as valves &instruments and vertical runs of pipe, concentrated loads to be supported as close to the load aspossible in order to keep bending stresses to a minimum. Reduce spans by one-fourth wherechanges of direction occur.
